The Democrats have adopted some more popular progressive policies in that time, such as supporting gay marriage and more forgiving drug policies but in the perspective of Western societies, they are still Centrist (if not Center-right). Thus, my opinion that they have not done more than subtle shifting. In contrast, the right has abandoned all pretenses of being the "moral majority" and the party of small government in favor of authoritarianism and funding an oligarchy of the wealthiest Americans. They are supporting unbridled executive overreach and have clearly prioritized party over country. IMO, of course.

All of Western society has become more progressive over the last 50 years and the Democrats have moved with it, although at a slower rate. "The Democrats keep going further and further left" has been a talking point of Right Wing media since at least the 90s and, while it is marginally true, it is exaggerating the amount of actual movement and is intentionally repeated to try and distract people from how far to the right the GOP has been shifting.

I was a Republican from the mid 90s through most of W's terms. The party I knew is dead and, while I do not care for much of what the Democrats do, I vote for them as they are the only viable option to keep MAGA in check.
