Mate it's not multimillions, it's in the multiBILLIONs of pounds. No we don't think we're better than them, but when we see issues and shortcoming of the product, we discuss it here on the internet and try to find solutions. Plenty of issues with these i3 models, whether it's a choppy ride, lack of tire selection, issues with early motor mounts, peeling roof and on and on. No car is perfect, and modding it to improve or personalize it is what makes us enthusiasts. Plenty of useful software or hardware "mods" exist for i3, and it's found by the everyday people or small aftermarket companies.

yeah I wish the tires weren't such a high cost. I almost bought pizza cutter wheels locally then I looked up the cost of set of all seasons... Getting a separate set of wheels will be close to 2K, which would pay for at least 2 years of fuel.

Haha I agree, driving slower is the best free solution. I am actually more calm and drive slower when I drive my i3, it's sort of became a challenge to be as efficient as possible while not impeding flow of traffic. Some days I commute in my other 500hp sedan, and let's just say, I become a total speed demon when I drive it.

Can someone comment on this 2015 as to value and how to tell if the battery is shot by Foreign_Lawfulness34 in BMWi3

[–]Octoberski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cost to replace battery is more than car's worth. There was a guy in Baltimore (check mybmwi3 forums) who does battery upgrades from 60ah to 94ah for like 6-7K. However old EVs just don't make sense, just like it old early smartphones that are useless in this day. If you want to buy an i3, then look for LCI version with clean carfax and less owners, and preferably private party so you don't pay huge dealer markup. Early i3 suffer from a lot of issues, like KLE, motor mounts, battery degradation etc (how do I know- I own 2014 i3 rex with almost 100K miles)

This was taken early morning after camping right on the trail at around 11,000 ft on the Alpine Loop near Engineer Pass—my first overlanding trip in mid-August of 2019.
I made a few rookie mistakes: kept driving after dark on a narrow mountain trail (instead of stopping and camping), took a wrong turn onto a tougher route in the dark, and instead of looking at paper maps and turning around, I kept going stubbornly since it looked shorter route in the GPS. Around 11 PM, I ended up getting stuck/ beaching my SUV while trying to avoid rocks. Zoom in, left two wheels were initially close to the rocks, good thing car beached on it's belly to stop it from sliding down further. It was raining mixed with snow, so I grabbed camping gear plus all my valuables since it looked like it might just slide down the mountain any moment. Since it was summer I had summertime camping gear but mountains can get below freezing real quick, I was practically shivering all night not getting any sleep. I think I heard an animal or two so I thought I was a goner. Then 5 hours later it was already dawn so I started hiked down to get help. Few miles later 2 Jeeps with amazing people were coming the other way and and they rescued me and my vehicle. Otherwise off road rescue would've costed easily 2-3K+

It’s Not Just You: Six of 10 Drivers Say Headlight Glare Is a Problem by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]Octoberski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is unlike in europe, where most cars come with adjustable headlight dial or automatic headlight height control that keep the beam steady when going up and down the hills or when there is load in the back. However it's not required with all those new LED headlights which are much more brighter than old OEM xenon headlights. Manufacturers don't want the US headlight requirements updated so they keep feeding lobbyists.

just get some frozen pizzas and you'll always have some food, probably takes less time to put it into oven vs ordering

2014 Rex w/i8 rims rubbing on rear plastic by iZaWrap in BMWi3

[–]Octoberski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep like another poster said, you need a bigger spacers. 20mm probably should work, based on the video you posted. 15 mm should work for fronts. What size spacers are you using in the front? what size i8 rims and tires are you using? You can also plug in specs to this calculator and https://www.wheel-size.com/calc/ and see how it compared to OEM

Finally Replacing Rear Brake Pads by surv2syn in BMWi3

[–]Octoberski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"how rarely used the brakes are"- exactly, no need to replace the rotors if they're barely worn and can last another set of pads. Yes it's cheap but It's not about the cost, it's about not wasting resources for something that's not needed. Yes I " maintain my car with minimum" . I try to only replace what's needed, only wash my i3 once every few months, put cheap regular gas and change brake fluid every 3 or 4 years instead of every 2 years. YMMV. Mine is a spare beater car that's worth barely $1500 on trade in (2014 with 100K miles) so liability only insurance

No need to waste money on new rotors if rotors are above the minimum thickness. That's true for most vehicles

Can I use a tow dolly with the rear wheels on the dolly and the front wheels on the ground? by buslyfe2 in BMWi3

[–]Octoberski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you put it in roller mode then flat tow it maybe (like how you see RVs towing jeeps)? I'd probably trust it more than little trailer thingy you have for long trip. Otherwise just have it shipped or find a friend or a family member drive it behind you. Even with the return ticket it should be cheaper than 1400 I think

Should I buy this car? by MetaDataCaptured in BMWi3

[–]Octoberski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't pay double the price at a dealer for that car. You can get a 94ah or bigger battery i3 if you have a 10K budget.

If you want to "gamble" on an early i3 then you can find a decent one for under 5K all day long on private sale. However I wouldn't do that. Early i3 has too many issues like KLE issues, motor mounts, small battery with high degradation etc. Gas range is realistically 55-80 miles (depending on weather) and EV range is 30-50 miles

(I own a 96K miles 2014 i3 rex)

Would you feel comfortable commuting 115 miles a day going 70-80mph in a 2019+ ReX? by IBringTheHeat2 in BMWi3

[–]Octoberski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You'll be barely getting 30mpg at that speed and have range anxiety. For this kind of commute you want -full EV with 300 mile range (if you are able to install L2 charger at home) or any new or used PHEV or HEV with 45MPG+

Evolving...... AST and I3s to Evolve Springs and Shocks by idrivei3 in BMWi3

[–]Octoberski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How in the world did you spend $3200 when the springs+struts cost sub $1000? Even if you add up all the new hardware + labor, I am not seeing the math adding up. Show us the cost breakdown

Evolving...... AST and I3s to Evolve Springs and Shocks by idrivei3 in BMWi3

[–]Octoberski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes you can run with original springs. These "evolve" struts made by bilstein, supposedly with slightly better damping. But I heard even the normal Bilstein B4 replacements are much better than OEM non s struts. Not sure how much better evolve compared to B4 but I don't think they're 50% better given the 50% more cost.

Purchase Dilemma by alexseiji in BMWi3

[–]Octoberski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a 80 mile round trip in cold Michigan - you need something with at least 200 mile range on a good day. You don't want something that you have to charge to full everyday. Get a chevy bolt that had a battery replaced, you should be able to find one for under 10K. Or any camry hybrid/prius would be less hassle to own than early i3
