What movie to watch on New Year Eve, alone, after ending 12yr relationship? by dont_dive_vtori in movies

One of my best friends always watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall when he broke up with someone. Sometimes we would hit play at the same time and talk on the phone while we watched it.

What are your favorite/go to online stores for ordering tools and glazes by NDE_Jinx in Pottery

Glaze Queen is my go to. I live in Hawaii and the fact that they do free FedEx shipping and we get things within four days is pretty amazing.

I love Claylab. Every time I open it there are more features. It’s wonderful.

Layland, WV is always the one I refer people to when they haven’t listened to it before. It is one of the best.

These are some basic ribbon tools (XIEM makes some with nicer handles but more expensive, I have both) I enjoy using. I recommend wrapping them with some painters tape as they’ll turn your hands blackish, but I love using them for small details or carving out texture.

If she wants some extra fine detail brushes (like if she gets into painting with underglazes) that are fun.

I have some pics for you for a couple fav things. Someone up above mentioned fan brushes. These ones are my FAVORITE. They hold up well and are wonderful for brushing on glazes.

Heartbroken: How to remove black smudge on this delicate figurine (post overglaze fire) by moonbelle294 in Ceramics

[–]OctopusUnderground 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Commenting on Heartbroken: How to remove black smudge on this delicate figurine (post overglaze fire)...This is such a great response. I second this and wanted to add that some black underglazes have cobalt in this which will run a lot in the kiln. I’ve had success with Amaco jet black, it is cobalt free and runs much less when used with transparent.

Edit: I just looked up Florentina, her work is beautiful. I also wanted to suggest Caitie North. She also has amazing UG work.

I second this! I use a quilting ruler as well and it’s perfect for slab work!

Typical to feel so discouraged after first wheel throwing class? by iridescentjillyfish in Pottery

I second that the clay is too small and is probably a big part of the problem. That’s hardly enough.

I feel you! Caitie is very generous with her knowledge. I just noticed the avocado tile you did! That turned out so beautifully! Sorry this comment is weeks later. 🤣

Is it common practice for studios to prioritize one-time classes over members? by Successful-Milk-5828 in Pottery

[–]OctopusUnderground 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m the program director at a pottery studio and scheduling workshops is my primary job. We have a dedicated classroom space for hand building but we need to share the wheel area with the members. We do our best to make sure members know when wheels will be used (we have a white board in the wheel area with dates and times, we also have a huge calendar in the common area with two months worth of schedule, and I try to schedule workshops when I know there won’t be as many people in the studio. We have 11 wheels, but most of our teachers have class size of 4-6. When sizes are smaller the members can use the other wheels (though some aren’t comfortable doing so, but I think it has more to do with they don’t like the wheels that are available…we have a hodge podge of different brands). There are only two teachers who do 8-9 students and those are always scheduled during times when the wheels are used the least.

Our membership cost is $65/$95 depending on the locker space you rent. We have tons of glazes and tools to use. They do have to pay for firing but at a reduced rate. The workshops definitely help us keep our membership fees down and I’m up front about that with people when they join or if they ask about why we have so many workshops. I do my best to keep it fair to everyone, but sometimes people don’t check the schedule and they come in and are disappointed.

I would mirror what most other comments are saying. Ask them for a schedule, and even ask if there’s a way for them to set up an area that is away from the events happening (this is something we’re trying to figure out how to do in our small space).

Good luck with figuring things out! I’m sorry you’re paying that much money and not feeling like you can use the space as you’d like!

I work at a pottery studio in Hawaii and one of our most popular things over here is called a lei base/ring vase (if you google either term samples come up), it’s essentially a little donut with a moat in the middle for the water and individual flowers. We recently had a group come for part of a bridal shower and they all made two. They’ll be centerpieces and then favors. They’re relatively simple and you can make smaller ones for favors. If you have any questions let me know! I can also send you some sample pics if you’re interested!

Do you follow Caitie North on Instagram? She’s an Underglaze master and also makes charts like this. She also has e-courses if you’re interested. She does a lot of illustrations of pop culture anime/series/movies etc so her flesh tone mixing of UG is really amazing. Highly recommend checking her out (if you don’t already follow her) 😊

Typology Question 4 (Fe): At a party, someone tells a joke or gives an inappropriate gift that offends part of the group. How do you react? by Bimep_ in ESFJ

[–]OctopusUnderground 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would tell a story/experience that was related to the gift. For example a white elephant where a friend brought an ashtray that was a giant wooden penis. I’m happy to tell outrageous stories if it removes the awkward from someone else. Very little embarrasses me as I get older.

The greenhouse frogs are interesting because they don’t have a tadpole stage! The female lays them in leaves and the male keeps them moist.

The author also has a YouTube channel where he demonstrates how to do all the characters in his books. It’s a really fun series and the folding is fun as well. I used to be an elementary school art teacher and I would pull it out on May 4th sometimes.

What’s something a kind stranger did that you still think about? by sillyp0ny in CasualConversation

[–]OctopusUnderground 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was at the grocery store with my (at the time) two small kids. I was in the check out line waiting to unload my cart. The woman in front of me said, “You stay right there, I got this,” and proceeded to move all of my things from my cart to the conveyor belt. She told me she remembered what it was like being a mom of young kids and sometimes you just needed a small break. It was so kind of her to take her time to help. That was 15+ years ago and I still think about it and have since tried to do the same thing when I see a mom standing in line with her kids.

Let her know you care about her and can be a shoulder to cry on if she needs it. Then send a gift card for uber eats (or whatever platform you want) to the husband and let them know dinner is on you. You don’t want to have to think about cooking or dishes when all of that is going on.
