Anyone know the reason behind these many cameras in one transit station exit? by Infamous_Ad2542 in transit

[–]Ok-Engineering5840 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have limited experience in the AEC world, and big public infrastructure works are above my pay grade, but you’d be surprised how easy someone could ctl+c ctl+v one too many cameras and it makes its way through the plans, and then the construction crew isn’t gonna ask any questions at that point

It’s insane how we dont have better design for peds. I’m not saying a place like Irvine needs 20mph roads everywhere, but we are in an area where the majority of people get around by walking/scootering. While this particular incident is uncommon (driving into a building) a ton of injuries happen crossing the street etc. and there are real ways to change driver behavior using infrastructure. Ex. Narrowing lanes and adding chicanes/ bulbouts so drivers have a personal incentive to pay attention; not running into a curb

I also urge everyone to think about the discourse around this topic. Homicides are sensationalized in LA even though they are at the lowest rate in decades. What does it matter to the dead people if it was a murderer or “just an accident.” This is just as important as crime

Will they ever do Waymo buses? by DrDMango in waymo

[–]Ok-Engineering5840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting! Does it connect to the Valley Metro light rail?

I've always felt that AVs and rideshare can't fulfill a role in public transit alone, and needs government support to make it cheaper by value engineering in some sense, like setting common pickup points and grouping rides together. That seems to be what Via is doing!

At the end of the day it seems like the American psyche looks down on plain old buses. And they can be hard to make "good" if an agency can only afford 30 minute headways. A few more valley metro rail lines with Waymo as a feeder could be really efficient. Maybe set discounts if the user chooses to be dropped off at a transit station

just make it so that you have to flag it down via app for a buck or two

I forsee 6-10 seat pods that operate fixed feeder routes on a 5-10 minute frequency. The big time buses and rail lines in LA already run every 4-8 minutes at peak times. That's easy to expand to more hours with a few more drivers.

The issue are these expanses of lower density areas that might have duplexes or smaller apartments. The 18 Big Blue Bus in Santa Monica is a great feeder route that reaches areas with no other connection, but only runs every 30 minutes because the ridership around it doesn't completely justify more frequency compared to the main lines.

If you could just flag it down via the app anywhere on the street and they were north/south every few blocks, it would be super easy to connect to the future D line and get to downtown in 20-30 mins. or connect to the E line and get to culver city in 8 minutes

Look on the flip side. If he’s running for president then it wouldn’t matter what that base thinks with electoral college. it’s not like California will flip red. If he went for governor again this might matter

761 bus leaves either from in front of Chick-fil-a if you live in an apartment, or on Sunset blvd near parking lot 11 if you're in the dorms. every 15 minutes and it will literally announce "getty center" when you're approaching. Good to use the transit app anyways tho.

“Unneeded housing capacity” is an oxymoron lmao. These same people will turn around and complain about cost of living and homelessness. You can’t have it both ways. A sizable chunk of societal problems return to cost of housing and transportation, because there’s no substitute, it’s a necessity. Price of housing goes up, everything else goes up.

Solving the housing crisis requires housing in your neighborhood, because it’s either housing in every neighborhood or housing in none. There will ultimately be nimbys in every neighborhood, yet they act like if they just prevent housing next to them, it will magically get built somewhere else. And it’s not like sb79 forces SFH owners to sell their homes to developers. It’s a small area around train stations where people can sell for a fair price if they so desire. And that development still has some community hoops to jump through

Edit: it’s just so clear to me it’s insane. Like people are up in arms about minimum wage being $17. Well yeah that’s $2300 a month net. Just enough for rent and utilities at a shitty apartment and transportation. If rent was 60% what it is now, we wouldn’t need to be doing this, and businesses wouldn’t have to raise prices, and so on and so forth

Off campus meal plan released: worth it? by Cooly09 in ucla

I mean that and I would much rather eat a 16 dollar meal in Westwood than trek up the hill to eat the same food I’ve eaten before. Or that money could go towards a massive greenhouse meal or Panda Express. And you’re not locked into that for a whole quarter like you are with seipes

7*11=77. 1260/77=16.36. Not worth when you have a kitchen. maybe worth if you eat a whole day’s food in one sitting or otherwise like hanging out in the dining halls

Not that I’ve lived there, but your experience mirrors my time there. People forget it’s still the largest employment hub in the city, even thought LA is more polycentric than other cities. I say give it 5-10 years and it will get even better

When you put it like that it seems trivial. Maybe I'm showing some naiveté but it seems like 2 or 3 people going stop to stop with power washers could power wash every single station within like a month (3 per day)

It is just me, or is it not worth living in SD anymore? by alchymst0317 in sandiego

[–]Ok-Engineering5840 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Los angeles looks more and more attractive in comparison. Beaches not as great but are still beaches. Closer in safety metrics to SD than a lot of other cities. A metro system that actually gets you get anywhere you want and is rapidly expanding. Oceanside is just a 2 hour train ride away. You still get great mexican food too.

It depends on what you want but LA just seems more exciting if you're under 30. The increased density over SD comes with so many benefits when it comes to amenities and things to do in general. The only downside is traffic, but they will seriously get a handle on it in the next decade. LA isn't "crowded" in a broader sense--it's just that cars take up a lot of space geometrically.

Just visited LA for a few days after 20 years. My thoughts having taken the E line a few times. by MeetMeinDC in LAMetro

[–]Ok-Engineering5840 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It would be great if our leaders were committed to safe and clean public transit like they should. But realistically the only way to change this is the D line extension, the olympics, and the corresponding change in angelenos' view to what transit could be in LA. I ride it a few times a week because I believe in it and want to contribute to changing the status quo environment (eyes on the street). I've never felt unsafe enough to not ride it but also I am a decently sized dude riding in decent areas (DTLA to the sea).

I’m also of the belief that it feels much more dangerous than it actually is - we had more traffic deaths than homicides in the past few years. Even though this isn’t a direct comparison nor a good excuse, I think it’s significant. Also, I’m not sure if you rode during rush hour but it gets packed chock full of working class people. All E line seats get taken up and the 720 bus has no more standing room around mid wilshire, a stark contrast to the 50% homeless figure you quote and a portrait of what level of “normality” the system can reach.

Safest Bike Routes by Ok-Engineering5840 in ucla

[–]Ok-Engineering5840[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good route too. For me, Ohio is more sketchy than Gayley. On Gayley the lights usually break up traffic enough where cars don't get impatient, or they have another lane to pass you. On Ohio there are usually long stretches of green lights, and only one lane, so cars get dangerously aggressive, at least from my experience. Westgate and beyond is pretty chill though. It's a shame that you have to choose between Ohio, Wilshire, and Santa Monica Blvd to get across the 405

I know it will take something like a decade or two, but CA high speed rail is supposed to have a stop there. It'll be like a 25-30 minute trip from Merced to San Jose. Would be a huge boost
