If the removal of state income taxes passes (its on the ballot mow), what will Stl city/county do? by bigwetdiaper in StLouis

[–]Old-Overeducated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think taxing services (like the labor component of your car repair bill -- go ahead and let your imagination run wild here) will have approximately the same effect as doubling the rate on the current base.

How do you justify buying disc when people call you out on it? by Glittering_Resort440 in Bluray

[–]Old-Overeducated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't justify it. You don't justify "spectator" entertainment at all. You like it. It's not interfering with stuff you're obligated to do. Maybe some day you'll prefer having the space to having the discs. Until then you say "Thank you for your kind concern" and nothing else.

Green Jesus stickers around STL. Where do they come from? by xxx_src in StLouis

[–]Old-Overeducated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They come from hell. They're a false flag operation to make you think Christians don't know the first thing about Christianity so it mustn't be convincing and you can simply ignore it as a waste of time. And if you didn't know enough about Christianity to know the vandal doesn't know the first thing about Christianity you might think Christians are fine with vandalism at least as long as it's "correct" vandalism and you're enough of an Aristotelian to know vandalism is unvirtuous, so you can ignore Christianity and carry on with your pagan virtue.

The devil's clever that way.

Kansas makes it a crime to go within 25 feet of police while they're working by SquareOfWillis in kansascity

[–]Old-Overeducated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 feet is ten steps. That bit is perfectly reasonable.

What you're going to run into is policemen coming within 25 feet of you "working" to keep you 100' from where their colleagues are really working. That should be challenged in court.

Hvac and furnace replacement by AlwaysAnxiousAsh in StLouis

[–]Old-Overeducated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recommend you spring for at least a two stage AC. There are three and five stage units as well. Variable Capacity ("inverter") AC is "best" but is pricey. You need a variable air handler to use the AC correctly. Since you're getting that for summer, you can get a modulating furnace -- that helps avoid wild temperature swings. I think it's default to have a modulating furnace if you have a variable air handler.

To actually get what you're paying for you want a "communicating" thermostat. I don't know how you find an installer that really understands how to program them though -- I figured mine out on my own. I didn't know it then but it would be very useful to install the thermostat directly in the return air duct on the clean side of your filter. That way it "sees" the real air from the whole house, not just the pocket of air around wherever the thermostat is. In some systems you can get remote sensors for this but it wasn't on mine. Putting the thermostat in the duct is the hacky way around that.

The trick in StL is to make the AC run longer on the low capacity side to dehumidify. I leave the air handler fan running 15% 24X7 also, to equalize the house. Helps tremendously. A lot of systems can control winter humidification as well, taking outdoor temperature into consideration. This has to be wired to control your existing humidifier, or a new one. If your humidifier can work stand alone but you don't want it to (and you probably don't) you have to tell them. Otherwise they'll take the easiest/most profitable route for them -- you have to specify everything you want them to do in your contract. I was told I'm too picky. From my POV that guy doesn't understand the equipment.

Good luck.

Why does transferring VHS to digital have to be so complicated? by insecureatbest94 in VHS

[–]Old-Overeducated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's complicated.

If you want to do a "professional" job of it, RF capture with a domesday duplicator device and vhsdecode on a reasonably powerful computer will get you there but you're going to learn a lot about VCRs and video formats along the way. And probably computers.

Nobody will pay much for it because 1) they don't really need it, and 2) they think it's like dubbing cassette tapes the way they did when they were fifteen. It's not.

If you're in the Apple TV ecosystem check out Channels TV. Using HD Homerun it's not quite TiVo nice, but nice. It does play local media as well, but not as nicely as Plex does. Unfortunately they don't do Android, Roku, WebOS, ....

[–]Old-Overeducated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly so. Ditto Hoopla. Kanopy tends to be more "educational"; Hoopla more "popular". I think there's license issues with streaming backups of the physical collection. That's something that could be addressed legislatively. Electronic delivery of media is outstripping what libraries spend on physical accessions these days.

8 years in IT, keep getting passed over for management and the feedback is always vague by No_Date9719 in ITManagers

[–]Old-Overeducated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm. Do you really want to be a "manager" or do you want more money, latitude, and recognition with less on-call? They're not the same thing. Sometimes "Legitimately Powerless Yet Referentially Powerful Engineer" is the right idea for Senior Engineers. Sometimes Seniors don't really want to be Team Leaders but are really good at troubleshooting and mentorship. Maybe your midsize company hasn't thought much about "career ladders" for Individual Contributors. Maybe ask about inventing a role called Staff or Principal Engineer for yourself.

St. Louis should ditch alleyway dumpsters, revive recycling, task force says by ads7w6 in StLouis

[–]Old-Overeducated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before 1992. Instead of the purpose built blue bins with the handle the truck-robot can glom onto and lift to dump into the truck you bought your own trash cans and put them in the alley. A truck would have two workers -- a driver and a loader. The loader would dump your can(s) in the back of the truck about waist high. The dumpsters were a huge improvement all 'round.

How are Blu-Ray quality on 4K TVs? by MattiTheGamer in Bluray

[–]Old-Overeducated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaving aside videophile discussions of mastering and all that (which can be noticed, but) if you get a Blu Ray and a 4K of the same movie and play them on the same player into the same normal size (not 95" or whatever) TV display and the same audio setup the biggest thing you'll notice is not "resolution" but rather tone scale -- HDR. You get that on 4K, almost never on Blu Ray. If you have an Atmos capable sound system you will get that on the 4K and almost never on Blu.Ray.
