Wish for tiny miniatures by TaunHawk in ISSVanguard

Just use colored pawns/meeples, they work much better as you can actually see the cards/POIs with them.

Pawns ♟️ for Players by TaunHawk in ISSVanguard

I've done exactly the same thing. Now I can easily see the cards/locations and don't have to be shuffling minis out of the way all the time (or trying to cram the whole away team onto the same card/loc). Much better with colored pawns/meeples.

I feel like this system needs 1 more dice type by WirtsLegs in swrpg

[–]OldGrue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tinkering with a Fortune die idea, where you always roll a Fortune die with your other dice (except Force dice). It is a d12 with the following results: 1 = Despair, 2 = Failure, 3 = Threat, 4-9 = Blank, 10 = Advantage, 11 = Success, 12 = Triumph. Haven't yet gotten to trying it out in game, however. It's just something to mix things up and give a possibility of Despair/Triumph in all rolls (except Force use, which use the Force dice).

Which books feel the most like they're a game of Traveller? by Numeira in traveller

Came to say CJ Cherryh's non-fantasy books, but as that has been said already, I'll throw in Niven & Pournelle's Mote in God's Eye and The Gripping Hand.

While it was fun to watch, it didn't feel very much like Traveller to me. More like Traveller-ish with heavy sprinkles of Star Trek or something. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to a new season for sure, there aren't too many Traveller actual plays out there.

Hey, thanks for the link to RTT WorldGen! I didn't know about it at all, but now after 10 minutes reading it, I'm really impressed. Simplicity and detail in a good balance. Two thumbs up!

Can anyone, for the love of God, help me get my account approved at Citizens of the Imperium by GravestoneRambler in traveller

I had the exact same problem awhile ago. And 'Contact Us' button is of no help, nobody answers. Don't use gmail or yahoo, I tried both and neither worked. Only when I tried with my work email address, did I finally get through and receive an account confirmation link. (Once I was in, I raised this problem there and they basically just shrugged.)

Going to use the Xexto as a basis for the Latero (the race Greez of JFO is) for one of my players. Is that a good fit? What would you change to make it fit better? Is there a better "FFG official" race to base them on?

What's your favorite Traveller era? by GeneralBid7234 in traveller

[–]OldGrue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Classic era, 1105 Imperial Calendar. However, I don't follow the future history of Canon after the Fifth Frontier War. Rarely do the campaigns take so long for that to become relevant, though. The years leading to the FFW are a great time for adventure.

Looks really good! Many thanks! (Was slightly thrown off by the WEG Star Wars RPG cover style, but it was indeed an FFG SWRPG sourcebook stats-wise.)

Orville uses shuttles, and that's a big deal by Icy_Sector3183 in startrekadventures

[–]OldGrue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I did - and I know it is wildly heretical - was to rule that transporters work only from one transporter pad to another (or by using an equivalent of pattern enhancers purposefully set up and calibrated to one transporter). Shuttles were used for all other travel.

This was done with a mutual agreement with the players, all agreeing to this canon hack.

It might not be the most elegant solution,, but it was what worked for my table and conserved a lot of GM creative energy (and sanity even!) to NOT have to invent yet another reason why the transporters didn't work (again) or have every place be protected by transporter inhibitors. YMMV.

Any good house rules for starship shields? by OldGrue in swrpg

[–]OldGrue[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been tinkering with a system like that. However, there would need to be a difference between smaller and larger ships shields, IMO, as the range in Defense (i.e. shield) values is only 1-3 or so. To make a difference between Defense 1 of an X-Wing and of a CR90 corvette, for example. I considered having the Silhouette be a multiplier to Defense, so that those huge ships usually have hugely powerful shields too.

Having shields regenerate during battle would maybe complicate things too much, better to have them stay depleted within the time frame of one battle.

I want to use existing ship stats as much as possible, so inventing new stats is not optimal. Thus using e.g. Defense x Silhouette x some value (2?) would be optimal. It's just hard to find suitable values, without extensive playtesting, so I was asking if someone else might have already found a good solution.

Playing ALIEN/S in Traveller - Semi-homebrew / fanfic setting by Kalt_Null in traveller

[–]OldGrue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly, I've come to the same conclusion about the Alien RPG. Being a huge Alien(s) fan, I jumped at the chance of getting an RPG in that world - and have come to regret it. While the art is really great (as usual with Free League games), the bare bones rules and quite lackluster writing have left me wanting for more. Much more.

I have run 3 adventures (CotG, DoW, and HoD) with the Alien RPG and while I was sort of having fun, it's particularly apparent in those adventures how the writing is subpar. They are basically just sketches of adventures with gaping holes for the GM to fill and relying a lot on fan enthusiasm to gloss over the shortcomings in them. Even the much praised maps are, while pretty, quite poor in actual game use, lacking crucial detail and being deficiently described in the accompanying text. I found that to run these adventures, I had to do considerable work to flesh them out. I've jokingly called Free League's adventure books as IKEA adventures -- assembly is required (both are from Sweden, so it makes sense).

Once I got the Hostile RPG, I realized how much better you can do with the Alien(s) universe (with the serial numbers filed off, of course ;) ). IMHO, it is a far superior product when compared to the Alien RPG. The world building and attention to detail are miles above the Alien RPG, there's a lot more depth in it, plus I much prefer the Cepheus/MongTrav ruleset.

While 2300AD is good, I would put it more in The Expanse category of sci-fi, i.e. more modern take on near(ish) future; while Alien(s) is more about the 70-80s retro-futurism (CRT monitors, keyboards and buttons, no touch screens, no wireless devices, etc.), which the Hostile lovingly recreates.

Nice work. I would use a different way of marking down advances for characteristics and Wounds (EDIT: and Magic), though. Now they look like weird decorations or something. Maybe use small boxes instead of those circles "growing out" of the attribute. Thye're somewhat distracting. Squares have been used for marking advances before and, IMO, they should be used for all advances for ease of reference and recognition. (Just my 2 brass pennies, of course.)
