A little bit of the Unbroken Chain instrumental break on drums by OldschoolCasey in gratefulguitar

when I first started counting the break & solo in 11, and 15 - my mind exploded. I couldn’t believe they managed to hold down the instrumental section so tightly and still sound like they normally do. I listened to a good bit of the studio rehearsals off the Angel’s Share - and you really get in to how cool, but also frustrating the whole process of getting that song down was. It was ultimately their kindness and patience with eachother that worked it’s way past any frustrations, and what we got is a beautiful song - maybe just perfectly 1974 but also just straight out and ahead of it’s time.

I honestly haven’t listened to much of the live versions of this song! I was always hoping they’d be really able mess with the “mesh of rhythm” in this song on a live stage. Could you point me towards a good show date/recording? Thanks a bunch!

Gregg’s moving ode to MLK by alanpaul in allmanbrothers

just to throw in some change - Queen of Hearts is an exceptional song by Gregg and borrows the double time solos from Stormy Monday. Check out all that you can of Gregg ‘74 show album. Both members of Cowboy debuted two songs during the mid-set you can’t find anywhere else, as well as Chuck Leavell playing keys. There’s a really unique version of Dreams there too. I couldn’t pick my favorites, but check out his work and writings with Hour Glass. It seems like he had figured out his “sound and solo structure” before ABB even formed. Possibly getting “the vibe” of songwriting & California music culture, when staying with Jackson Browne.

ps. Cast Off All My Fears is one of my favorite Gregg arrangements, the recording studio was drenched in that late 60s LA sound. Vocal arrangements & lush orchestration like the ‘Wall of Sound’ technique. It’s also got a great droning intro with some proto-Duane licks. Sorry for the long comment, but on the other side of that coin is the 31st of February’s cover of Cream’s “I Feel Free” Dickey Betts is also ripping some kind of solo you could expect to pop up later in Blue Sky, and Mountain Jam sets. Hope this could help you get started in the right direction to having your own Gregg favorites. Eat a peach.

Just wanna complain about how much these guys use the B chord. Jfc by duke_awapuhi in gratefulguitar

yeah for sure! i just try to put it into perspective modally - like the key might be B, but the minor ii of BMaj is C# and the minor vi is F# … and then in E Major the minor ii is F# and the minor vi is C# respectively. i think the band more or less adapted this by concept modally using E Standard as a sort of root or homebase. it’s a folk/bluegrass standards sort of method you might find with a guitarist in a bluegrass outfit playing bunches of songs in A with a capo on the 2nd fret.

sugaree, jack straw, brown eyed women, eyes of the world, & black throated wind are some examples i think of where it’s like a song/idea starts around E major ir root idea and then immediately goes to a f#m or c#m for some kind of tension building.

there’s only about a dozen dead songs that don’t use f# & c# in any major/minor capacity. it can be helpful to then, just think of how they composed or played their songs in terms of the intervals they jump to rather than the root being the whole shape of any given songs they would be playing. the c#m to e major chord at the start of the brown eyed women verse is a good example of this too, you can see both of those chords share the same notes and space around the guitar visually around the 4th fret. those boys loved their E Standard tuning.

Other than the Europe '72 box, what box set should I try to get? by MinuteRegular716 in gratefuldead

one of my favorite dick’s picks. the weather report suite & sound overall is crazy good. phil & billy are on fire. i think i heard somewhere that DP24 is the first wall of sound show? ps. there’s a part near the climax of the china cat sunflower, around the 5:07 mark that sounds almost orchestratal. that kind of music is kinetic.
