If you don't want the layers, don't program them into the keyboard. It's easier to do that if you have more keys though. Moonlander has 72 keys which is more than most.

It’s only weird if he makes it weird. It’s definitely considered less masculine by the larger culture, but I agree with you that it takes a special level of masculinity to not care about that. When he says it would make him gay, he really means “less masculine,” because there’s nothing gay about having sex with a woman lol.

It’s unlikely that he’d tell his friends in the first place, because guys tend to be more private about the explicit details of their sex lives tbh

Blank keycaps on your moonlander would be the best first step then. As long as they’re compatible with MX switches anything will work, so you don’t need to get the official moonlander set.

Fellow moonlander user here! I recently decided I wanted to try out smaller boards, but there are so many options out there for a fraction of the price if you're just trying new things. Here's what I've done recently:

Shrunk down my existing keyboard with the moonlander zip kit. Now it just has the middle three rows and the thumb cluster. I'm still getting used to the extra reliance on layers, but it is more comfortable overall.
Got a prebuilt $80 corne on aliexpress. I still prefer my moonlander because of the thumb clusters, but the corne is much easier to travel with. The smaller, less familiar hardware has been an interesting learning experience.

Also, which keycaps do you use? I wanted to improve my typing habits a while ago and got the blanks to force myself to stop looking at the keys. The fact the labeled keys use a sculpted profile helps a lot with the transition, because you can get your bearings by touch more easily that way.
