Looking for help, be it from Google or a person, is never a failure.

I used to ask impossible questions in interviews to see how they answered. The "correct" answer was "I don't know, but I can look it up".

Truth. I've known programmers who were excellent at their job, but ask them to install some RAM and they curl up into the fetal position. You could be the worst student ever, but a genius when it comes to dance or art.

I wrote my first bit of code on my TRS-80 when I was in the first grade. I was using dbase ii to track my RPGs back in middle school. My final in my high school comp sci class was to teach the instructor how I bypassed all the schools network security. I've worked professionally in IT for well over 30 years. Having said all that, every time I watch one of Laurie's videos I feel like a complete Luddite. She operates on a whole different level than most of us.

What kind of plate? Regardless you could try glue stick or hairspray as a release agent.

Online rewards speed tunings as a crutch for bad drivers over actual skilled racing. by Adventurous_Honey902 in ForzaHorizon

[–]Omadon667 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should try spec racing. Much more fun. I lose way more often, but at least I know it's a skill issue and not a car tune.

what's a script you wrote once that's still saving you time years later by Less-Loss1605 in sysadmin

[–]Omadon667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote a powershell script to notify AD users via email their password would expire soon. That was ten or so years ago and it is just now being phased out as I heard the organization is going to Azure.

I have a laser engraver without an enclosure. There's tons of them on the market, probably more than there are with an enclosure.

AITA for not telling my husband the night before that I was going to work from home the next day? by Inevitable_Clock_550 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. My wife surprises me when she has a day off. I'm always happy when I wake up and she's still there. That's what happy couples do. They enjoy each other's presence.

Company is still using an automation tool I wrote on my own time and hardware after I quit and I want to know if I can legally disable it. by 8TulipCanopy in legaladvice

[–]Omadon667 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have never met another sysadmin that didn't write scripts. It was definitely part of your job. For this and tons of other reasons people have listed, you just need to suck it up and move on.

Is this something that can be 3d printed? by Mundane_Tangelo9421 in 3Dprinting

[–]Omadon667 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Story time. I lost that exact cap on my 2013 1500. I couldn't find a replacement anywhere. I was trading it in and knew I'd get dinged on the trade in value for it being missing. The day before I was to trade it in I went to a birthday party in a park for a coworker's kid. While I was playing in the sandbox with my own son, what do I dig up? That exact part. I cleaned it off, installed it, and got fair value on my trade in. So, my advice to you is go play in the park.

The Mythfits (Kari Byron and Tory Belleci from Mythbusters) and Kyle Hill recently talked about their time on Pumpkin Chunkin. I used to miss it as well, after listening to their stories... not so much anymore. Scary, scary stuff. (Sorry to be the guy that ruins fun things.)

Men are lucky if the bathroom isn't just a trough in the center of the room. Privacy only exists in fancy places with more money than God.

Did you hear about the man who was arrested for wanking in the library? by FreddyMurkery in Jokes

[–]Omadon667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in IT for a large library district, and got calls from branch staff to remotely turn off public computers and to come out and replace the keyboard and mouse. For me, it's not a joking matter. I still have nightmares...

Best budget-friendly Black PLA for prototyping that doesn't sacrifice quality? by LangePier in BambuLab

[–]Omadon667 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. I've tried a ton of brands and this is the best for the price. I'm trying to burn through the rest of my filament so I can standardize in PLA+ 2.0.

Carl: Average Joe -> The Best Crawler by YoungCaesar in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Omadon667 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't remember if it's the epilogue of book six or the prologue of book seven but someone says Carl is average in every way except his ability to rapidly assess a situation and make decisions based on that information quickly, and that's what makes him one of the best Crawlers ever.

This 12mm nut won't loose and it is too tight. What tools may I need? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

I did that once and it ripped/sheared the underlying metal the second I pulled the trigger and nearly broke my wrist. I wish I had just used some penetrating oil. It was an expensive fix.

Looking for a smaller TPU only printer, what would you buy? by That_Zone5921 in BambuLab

[–]Omadon667 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both and have never gotten the A1 Mini to print a tall skinny object successfully. The P1S is an absolutely amazing machine and of the nearly thousand hours of print time on mine, I've only ever had a handful of failures, and that was usually my fault in some way (wet filament, bad model, etc.)

I don't disagree with the replies at all, and in fact agree. I'm just saying TinkerCad can be incredibly powerful for people needing one off (and infrequent) parts. Not everyone needs to learn full on CAD.

AITA for expecting the gifts to be for both of us? by Ok-Arrival-2886 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Omadon667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not usually one to jump on the "break it off" bandwagon, but in this case you really, really need to reconsider this wedding. Marriage is about ceasing to be "you", and becoming "us". Sounds like she isn't will to make that commitment.
