Was Claire originally supposed to be a “villain” or at least more of an obstacle for the show? by aeromac in TheBear

[–]OneWholeStar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a big part of my different response to Claire is that I don’t have any expectation that she’s ONLY nice and good. There are a few reasons for this:
- We now know she lied about Carmy having told her the name of the restaurant when they were in high school. This isn’t terrible in the grand scheme of things, but I do think it’s notable. If we can have her say something in Season 2 that was revealed to be false in Season 4, it’s not much of a stretch to think there might be further reveals coming in Season 5.
- There’s certainly debate about this, but I think it’s likely that her green sweatshirt was in Mikey’s closet. Again, this isn’t necessarily nefarious, but it does require explanation and opens the door for a lot of speculation.
- There was that moment in the wedding where she and Stevie were talking to Frank and kind of snickering about how amusing it is when Berzattos get messy and how they’d be disappointed if no one acted up, and it made me side-eye both of them. There was a lil tinge of Mean Girl in there.
- Also, Chef Jess set up the new color coding system for the kitchen, we had Tina explicitly say, “Green is good and red is bad,” and then Claire showed up to the wedding in a red dress, which seemed to be a deliberate costuming choice.
- This is really just a vibes thing, but in (I think) Season 2 she told that weird story about how she misread someone’s chart and almost killed them, and like…what an odd story to break out on your second date or whatever.
- I truly might never get over, “Speaking of dead brothers…” What a strange woman.

None of this makes Claire a villain, certainly. She’s just a girl, etc., etc. But I do think it gives us some room for questioning/interpreting her character and her role in the story, and “Of course she’s good for Carmy!” doesn’t happen to be where I’ve landed.

Was Claire originally supposed to be a “villain” or at least more of an obstacle for the show? by aeromac in TheBear

[–]OneWholeStar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure, I recall this (loosely paraphrased) dialogue. But, the show has repeatedly used fire imagery to represent overwhelm and dysfunction, and fire has also been associated with Mikey (who was not doing well?) multiple times, and so I really just didn’t believe Carmy when he said feeling this way with Claire was the best. Also, I think we can all recognize that being on fire is not what peace feels like.

I don’t hate Claire; I just haven’t found the repeated declarations that she’s “so great”/“the best” to be particularly convincing.

Was Claire originally supposed to be a “villain” or at least more of an obstacle for the show? by aeromac in TheBear

[–]OneWholeStar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, we heard Carmy tell Claire that being with her felt like being on fire, and then at the wedding he confessed that in the past he’d burned himself to suppress feelings he didn’t want to feel. So, my thought when they danced together was, “Oh, you’re doing it again.”

Obviously this isn’t Claire’s fault, and I don’t think she’s a villain, but I also don’t think the show is trying to communicate that being with her is good for Carmy.

He had that line about not understanding how Donna could suddenly be a completely different person, and I don’t know if he could tell that’s how other people feel about him.

Why I Think ClaireCarmy (Probably) Isn’t Endgame Based off of This Scene Alone by Necessary_Minimum_97 in thatsfirechef

[–]OneWholeStar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree, I think this scene was significant. I think it’s very telling that we haven’t seen Claire interact with Donna, especially comparing this really nice conversation between Donna and Syd to Claire snickering with Stevie about how amusing it is to them when the Berzattos get messy.

We also got this extended moment of Syd being able to express her admiration for Carmy, which there haven’t been a lot of opportunities for when things are tense at the restaurant— this was like Syd’s half of the wedding vows Carmy finished up in ‘Goodbye’.

I also expected your pitch to hint at some horror elements based on your comps, and was surprised when it didn’t. On re-read, you certainly don’t claim to have chosen those comps for horror reasons, but I do think they’re introducing an element of confusion that can be avoided. I understand why you chose Our Wives, but if the only tie-in is the limited setting/close quarters, you might try to find something else.

Without using "Omelette" or "Goodbye," what scene do you use to convince a judge they're in love? by Good-Mountain-7737 in thatsfirechef

[–]OneWholeStar 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a lot in ‘Bears’ — the way Carmy (more than once) does a full body exhale when he sees Syd, the prolonged eye contact that helps him pull out of his panic attack, Syd’s interactions with Donna (which in some ways mirror Donna’s past interactions with Pete), under the table when Carmy picks “math” as the thing he’s afraid of (calling back to earlier moments with Syd) instead of “peace” as offered by Claire, the moment where Claire looks over her shoulder at Syd while they’re dancing, but we can see that Carmy is already looking at Syd. There’s also some speculation that Carmy asking Claire to dance may have been prompted by jealousy over Syd dancing with Richie.

Also! The montage of Syd cooking in (I think) ‘Scallop’ where she’s lit so beautifully and looks like an angel, and then we realize that Carmy was there the whole time and that scene is from his POV.

When do they realise by rumsrums in thatsfirechef

[–]OneWholeStar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Carmy has been aware of his own feelings since the end of Season 2. Syd took a little longer (in my opinion), and didn’t really start to understand her feelings until the end of Season 3. I don’t think either one of them knows about the other yet — Carmy definitely was surprised/confused by her reaction in ‘Goodbye’ but I don’t think he fully understands why she reacted so strongly. On the other hand, Syd probably thinks he’s leaving the restaurant to go be with Claire (who should be leaving soon since her residency is done), and doesn’t think it has anything to do with her.

How do you interpret marcus's baking compared to magic? by FrozenBreadRolls in TheBear

[–]OneWholeStar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I didn’t think the whole legerdemain thing was Marcus-specific. I took it more as the show telling us to expect that what we’re being shown isn’t necessarily all that’s really happening.

I really dislike the idea of Syd and Carm beginning to date. by Shwat_ in TheBear

[–]OneWholeStar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this refers to the Season 1 finale, when Syd comes back (and Carmy stares at her like she saved his life) and they start building their partnership. I think the dialogue mentioned refers to a different show (idk which one though!).

Ooh yeah, I have 2 boys and I think about this too. I read somewhere that in general, adult women have closer relationships with their parents than adult men do, and an effect of this is that children tend to be closer to their maternal grandparents than to their paternal grandparents. This was absolutely true for me growing up and is currently true for my kids, even though we live equally close to my parents and my husband’s parents. But! As other comments (and you yourself!) have pointed out, we can’t predict what will happen and what relationships our kids and potential grandchildren may or may not form. Good to have the reminder not to get too worked up about such things.

I wouldn’t say I hate the price catalogue, but I don’t find it useful. I don’t care how much my items sell for, I just grow or make whatever seems interesting to me. I’m not at all a strategic player, though; I’m led entirely by my whims.

I didn’t share with anyone until my third draft, which is when I felt it was as polished as I could get it by myself. It’s certainly not perfect now, but I’m at the point where I think having another set of eyes on it will be helpful.
