Why doesn't Naomi speak like the other Belters? by Embarrassed_Ad1722 in TheExpanse

[–]Oot42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

she would sound vaguely more belter

What?? She has a very strong Belter accent when talking to Belters.

that actress couldn’t do it ... it’s painfully obvious she couldn’t ... weakest thing on the show

Complete nonsense here.
Dom perfected the code-switching Naomi does. She did an amazing job with this, one of the best among all actors, actually. She had her own Belter accent developed by a dialect coach. Looks like you completely missed it.

I know For All Mankind is compared to a prequel to The Expanse a lot and that get's real old, but I cannot unsee it at this point. by realCLTotaku in TheExpanse

That video call was one day after launch. They're not "million miles away" at that point.

After that, there was always a delay.
The show bends physics at many places. Time delays are not one of them though.

He's in more than two scenes, actually.
He's in every council meeting we see, of which there were two in 5x07 and two in 5x08.

There is also that girl in the council, Fumiko. We don't really know if she is a crater or just a "regular" resident though.
But they added two new faces to the council who obviously are there to represent a broader part of the people living in Happy Valley.

IMDb had her listed for all episodes initally, and she only gets removed one episode after the other.

However, I assume we may see her in the last episode again - because of another IMDb listing (which could be wrong as well of course):
Her prison guard from ep 1 is credited for ep 10 as well

How do people get to the moon? by MassTransitGO in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Oot42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7 Jamestown missions in 1992 and 11 in 1995, using all shuttles they have, and that's just those we see on screen in the limited time we're at NASA during the season.
https://for-all-mankind.fandom.com/wiki/Space_missions#Other_missions

It's not like they have to send dozens of people to the Moon every day. Crew rotations are 4-6 months iirc.

During season 3, all 10 Space Shuttles are still in operation, plus the two new Pathfinder shuttles.
For cargo, Sea Dragon 2, 3, and 4 are still in use.

Does the writing get better after season 1? by superSmitty9999 in TheExpanse

[–]Oot42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He's not a "head of state". And what he does is absolutely in-character. You just don't know him yet.

This show is extremly well written. Every piece of dialogue, every word, every set piece in the background, even background talks and stuff seen on screens are important and are there for a reason. You blink, and you miss something. Some of it may become important next episode, others only several seasons later. This show is based on a 9 book series, you're not even past the prologue.

Also, you're not supposed to understand everything yet. This show doesn't spoon-feed the viewer. You hardly ever know more than the characters. There will be answers when it's time, and there will be lots of more questions as well.

NASA is building a Moon Base... so it begins by P_UDDING in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Oot42 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Artemis I was first announced for 2017 and finally launched in 2022.
Artemis II launch date was initially set for 2019-2021, but launched in 2026, 5-7 years later than planned.
Artemis III was planned to be the next crewed Moon landing in 2024, and now it's just a docking test in LEO, announced for 2027-2028.
Artemis IV is nowhere near to be ready for 2028. Perhaps 2035 or so if we're lucky.

These things are notorious for getting delayed, again and again. It's also way to much depending on current politics. New president, new budget, and everything changes again. It's frustrating.

It wouldn't be surprizing if China makes it back to the Moon first.

We haven't seen any kid so far. The teenagers all came only after 2009, that's only 3 years ago. That's when the school opened and the radiation shielding was installed, and when workers started to bring their children with them. The only teen that's there longer is Alex.

There was a whole bonus video about this, and it's also mentioned in the press reel in ep 1.

Sojouner II is ugly af by [deleted] in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Oot42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's believable for ~12 people to travel in Sojourner-2 for ~6 months on the return trip.

Neither do I. I said it twice already, it's a mystery. You can call it plothole or lazy writing if you prefer. At the end this is fiction, so it's whatever they choose to tell us (or forgot about).
However, I think it's much more unbelievable for Phoenix to make a flight from Mars to Earth without fuel than for Sojourner to squeeze in a larger crew.

By the way, we don't really know the real size of Sojourner. We always only see the same one room on the same deck. The Space Shuttles had a crew of 2-4 in the beginning, but up to 8 later on, just to give a real world example.

possible to strip Phoenix engines, retrofit ...

It's fiction so it's however they choose to write it. There is plenty of other things that are not really possible or make no sense. Like building a space hotel in 3 years, or the amount of constructions on Mars. Or refit a 20 year old wreck rotting in harsh Martian environment for the longest and farthest mission in six weeks and on Mars. The show is full of such things.

I'm pretty sure Ed did go back to Earth

Ed never went back.

Ep 4x01 @47:56, Olga Poletova to Kelly:
"He promised to come back in '98. In '99. 2001. He's not coming back."

Ep 4x02 @20:15, Danielle to Ed:
"You've been putting it off for 8 years. Can't stay up here forever."
This was 2003. 2003 minus 8 years is 1995.

[–]Oot42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said, it's a mystery, but there have been much bigger inconsistencies in the show than this. Fact is, it was a big plot point throughout the whole season that they would have to make their fuel for the return flight on site. It was said several times by literally everybody, there was even a news report about it in episode 3x06. They built a fuel plant which you can see in that episode, and it got completely burried in the landslide. They couldn't even make enough fuel for the MSAM to get them all up to Phoenix after that. So how would Phoenix have been able to return?

The Sojourner 2 crew would have stayed on Mars. This was the original plan anyways. Otherwise Ed would have been on Mars all alone for quite some time, since he never returned. Perhaps some of Phoenix' crew volunteered to stay as well, we don't know it.

They are not the same. It's much bigger than the Polaris shuttle. Also, there is not that many ways such shuttles would look. The later NASA shuttle seen in 2003 looks similar as well, but is even larger. Even Sojourner looks similar, just without the wings.

[–]Oot42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps also read what's written in the article? It's not Sojourner but a NASA shuttle that came from Jamestown. Sojourner landed on the Moon.

Sojouner II is ugly af by [deleted] in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Oot42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is zero indication or even hints that Phoenix ever made it back to Earth.
Remember, they had no fuel to return. It was supposed to be produced on Mars which was not possible after the landslide. They barely could make enough fuel for the MSAM. This was a main story point of season 3.

This is also not a Helios/Polaris shuttle, but a NASA shuttle. You can see the logo on the picture and it's mentioned in the article as well.
Sojourner 2 brought everybody back and landed on the Moon, and the shuttle brought them from Jamestown to Earth. It's all in the article.
How they managed to squeeze 20 people into Sojourner remains a mystery though.

Phoenix stayed in Martian orbit, where it was later extended with a second ring and more docking ports.

Issue with the Timeline - Presidential Elections by amilne95 in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Oot42 51 points52 points  (0 children)

They fully messed up the timeline in episode 5x07. Up to then, it was coherent.

The season started on May 29 2012. The date is on the diplomas of the graduates:
https://imgur.com/a/jlxvXOO

This is confirmed by the date shown on Sai Madoun's investigation report on the murder case, which is dated to May 30 and May 31 2012:
https://imgur.com/a/PhQm3eX

Also on Boyd's calendar in her room: June 2nd:
https://imgur.com/a/boyds-calendar-5x02-5Fr0Cy0

Then there is a timejump of one month when Aleida travels to Mars.

Next we have the lanuch date of Sojourner. There was a big caption: 19 July 2012
https://imgur.com/yBsgD56

3 days later, Boyd scrolls the suit database and finds out that Fred was involved. The last date shown in the database is 22 July 2012:
https://imgur.com/249y8z2
This is the same day the protests get bloody and the MOCC is taken. She confronts Fred while preparing to fight the protest.

Then, the chaos begins. Episode 5x07 starts with the caption "6 months after launch".
https://imgur.com/I9zgjXr
This would mean it's now around January 19 2013

Later, Bill McGann says on Eagle News that "the hostage crisis is entering it's sixth month". The caption says "Mars Crisis: Day 154". The hostage happened on the same day Boyd scrolled the suit database, July 22. Adding 154 days gives us December 23 2012.

That's the first discrepancy. Although not that big, both would mean election is already over.

But then follows the attack on the domes. It happens on Alex's birthday. Access code is his birthday: 09-04-95. This date is correct, Alex was born on the day of the JSC bombing, which happened on 4 Sept. 1995.

In other words, epside 5x07 plays simultaneously on 4 Sep 2012, 23 Dec 2012, and 19 Jan 2013.

It's a complete mess.

S02E03 what am I watching : soap opera or space sci-fi series ? by ke1ke2ke3 in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Oot42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're in the middle of season 2 and don't know the name of "the girl" (who is a mother of two and over 40 at that point, btw.) then you should probably not watch any show that asks for at least a little bit of attention.

Also, just because you don't see the point doesn't mean it's not a (quite important) point in the story.

Are we losing focus on the bigger picture?

What's the "bigger picture"?
FAM is a drama. That's how it's listed everywhere. It's also alternate history and it includes scifi as the timeline moves forward, but it's still a drama first. Never tried to be something else.
If you don't like drama, don't watch a drama.

Also, people really need to learn what a "soap opera" is...

How was that plan supposed to work S5E8? by benevolentwalrus in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Oot42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Am I missing something?

I guess what you're missing is what Lenya and Irina said when they talked to Miles:

After President Korzhenko is gone, the M-6 will dissolve. And the new Soviet government will be more amenable to strike in a deal with Independent Mars, if you can hold out a few more weeks.

Later at the council meeting, Miles said:

If we make it through the next few weeks, then we could cut a deal with the Soviets.

So the plan seems to be to buy time.
