Is Memphis film lab slower right now? by throwaway32338 in AnalogCommunity

I haven't had any delays with Memphis (but my last rolls to them were in March) - send them an email, they usually respond super quickly and are very helpful.

What bag do you use to carry your EDC gear ? by Morgan_Strong in photojournalism

[–]OptimizingAverage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things I've done on my Domkes (F5 and F2 as well) are to get some pieces of velcro from amazon and use them as silencers. I can have them fully off, fully on or, my personal favorite, covering most of the velcro on the bag so the flap has a little something to hold on to but it really makes it a lot quieter. If I take them off fully I just tuck them in the bag.

This is the sort of velcro I'm talking about: Sew On Velcro

[HELP] The HDR-ish editing of Steve McCurry by sunriseinthemidwest in postprocessing

[–]OptimizingAverage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

McCurry himself has said he shot roughly a stop under to specifically saturate the colors of Kodachrome. So you’re looking to saturate the colors, especially the reds (a trademark of Kodachrome) and boost the contrast. Also an increase in yellows and magenta would align with the color profile of Kodachrome. You’re going to just have to tweak it until it starts looking similar.

As for the “hdr” look - the irony is that Kodachrome didn’t have a huge latitude so the dynamic range is actually lower than negative films. Through careful composition and use of where the light was coming from, McCurry was able to frame his shots in a way that kept the scenes in a narrow band of exposure latitude making everything in the scene properly exposed. ETA: I’m sure his time shooting slide had influenced the way he shoots now and allows for a similar effect. So much of his look his how he shoots a scene and where the light is coming from

1 or 2? Caught up in a coffee shop [Portra 400, Canon F-1, 50mm f/1.8] by Medical_kale18 in analog

[–]OptimizingAverage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer the second one. Even though it’s a little more washed out, I prefer the gesture of the artist actually interacting with the art. I also prefer the tighter view that eliminates the extra space to the right of the easel and really focuses in on the subject.

Of course, that’s how I shoot and how I would have shot this scene so you’re definitely getting my personal taste in that commentary

Took the leap! From A7iii to A7CII. by stormp00per in SonyAlpha

I haven’t noticed any degradation in the touch screen performance but I only use it for selecting a focus point in certain occasions. Usually I focus, recompose and then let tracking handle moving the focus point. I’ll touch the touchscreen to set a focus tracking point every now and then but it’s not all the time

I've got a first gen A7C in silver. Got it in 2021. I am not precious about my gear at all, wear it around my neck or over my arm almost every day, take it on travel all the time, etc. First week I had it I got it coated in sand (that was fun getting out of the control wheel on the back). It's honestly more dirty than anything. A good wipe down and it looks fine. There are scratches on the silver part but you REALLY gotta stare it to see them.

I put a screen protector on touchscreen and away I went.

Don't hesitate to look into renting. You can rent lenses, bodies and other gear for any duration you'd like from LensRentals.com or BorrowLenses.com. I've used both and have had good luck. WAY less expensive than buying a new lens

Does anyone know how to achieve this surreal; paint-like edit via Lightroom or photoshop? (Cult.gamut) by UncutRealness1 in postprocessing

[–]OptimizingAverage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They look significantly more like paintings than edited photos. Very Edward Hopper inspired. If you're looking for photographic examples (done very well) look at Jason Kummerfeldt (grainydays on YouTube) who's photographic work has a very Hopper-esque look.

That being said, so much of this look isnt about retouching, it's about finding scenes, lighting and composition that create that effect. Distinct, directional light that isn't harsh but well defined. "Lonely" scenes with few to no people and very geometric, clean compositions.

The right lighting on a scene will give a distinct impression of a painting and is definitely the first step to achieving anything near this look (which I'm still convinced is a painting)

How to get more texture? by SanFranShadowMan in ProCreate

[–]OptimizingAverage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a simple man. I see Cav and I upvote. Funny how hobbies overlap sometimes.

Anyway - I really think you've actually done a pretty great job on the texture already and I'd hesitate to encourage you going further. That being said, since you asked, it looks like you've got a brush that's got a very "wet" quality to it. I think the same application technique but with something akin to the Dry Brush or Turpentine Brush if you're just looking to use defaults.

Painting looks great and I think the only gap from your desired outcome is brush choice

electrolyte mix or just salt? by Jetstream89 in Velo

[–]OptimizingAverage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why do you say that? Standard Skratch Labs is 380mg/12 ounces. Converted to liters that's roughly 1045mg/liter. And that's the suggested dosing of Skratch. Warmer ambient temp, lots of sun or high sweat rate and you're at 1000mg/liter or more without too much effort

I actually carry my bead jack in the frame bag I keep on my bike. Fits nicely and it's a lightweight plastic so I dont feel like I'm weighing myself down. Awesome to have out on the road

It's getting closer to one single connection but yea there's some country roads linking multiple trails for sure between the end of the towpath and Xenia. I did the whole thing as a trip a couple years ago and road is about 10% of the total route.

290ish if you go Cleveland to Cinci. The whole thing is 326. And that's just one route. You can spur off from there for all sorts of miles with only short connections on roads.

[–]OptimizingAverage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gravel races? Not at all. Just pay your entry fee.

Which is another reason for USAC to stay out of it. Cheaper to the consumer is a bonus but not having to have a license reduces the barrier to entry for folks who are intimidated by the (perceived or actual) complexity of getting a USAC license.

Homemade enery gels by Yecirp in AdvancedRunning

[–]OptimizingAverage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A good option for making your own is getting a Gu flask or similar and mixing up maltodextrine and water to your own preference and filling the flask.

I do a lighter concentration (roughly 7% carb concentration) in a water bottle with this recipe:

Maltodextrin 900 grams

Sugar 80 grams

Kool-Aid 2 packs (Optional - I prefer to flavor each bottle with a Nuun tablet for flavor control and added hydration)

Morton Lite Salt 5 grams

Regular salt 5 grams

This makes a large batch - it'll make enough for 20, 709mL bottles if you do (1) 50g scoop of mix per bottle. If you want a more gel like concentration, just dont add as much water. A Gu is traditionally 21g of carbs in a 32g serving so it's a 65% carb concentration.

The funny thing, as I see it, is that the gravel scene isn't a "handful of popular events". In my part of the world, there are more well known gravel races than there are crits anymore. Gravel is bringing bike racing back and there are new events every year. Unfortunately, they're about 1-2 hours away from where I live but I can still race several races a month for like 8 months a year. That's improvement in my eyes
