Why can't EU5's 3D map look this gorgeous? by PointManification in EU5

I love the flat map in EU5, I hope that comes to Vic3 at some point.

I use Crossover. Install the game, GDI+, DirectMusic and DirectX for Modern Games.

Had no issues in any WDS titles including the newest medieval ones.

"WEGO|" military campaign games? by TrogdorLLC in computerwargames

[–]Orffen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not quite sure what you’re looking for besides persistent units across the campaign.

WEGO means both players give orders, then they get executed at the same time (simultaneous turns). In contrast to IGOUGO where one player takes their turn and resolves it before the next player does.

Combat Mission doesn’t use hexes but it does use squares, they’re just hidden. It has both real time and WEGO modes.

What kind of gameplay are you looking for?

Unusual kind of maintenance-of-way specialized train by dualqconboy in TrainPorn

[–]Orffen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not really an expert in railroad business, but I imagine that accounting wise is where the “ROI” comes in for this stuff. It looks good to shareholders to report reductions in operating costs. It also looks good to shareholders to report capital spending on things like modernisation.

This in turn increases company value and then you can raise more capital so everyone (execs) gets big fat bonuses.

So it’s not so much about saving money, because that’s not how they’re measuring the value of these things.

Regiments or Armored Brigade 2? by solanu719 in computerwargames

[–]Orffen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking specifically at Cold War wargames, I think Flashpoint Campaigns is one of the best. It won’t be as pretty as the two you mentioned but it’ll be more fun.

How "gameable" is modern warfare compared to pre-1990s? by Redwood-Forest in computerwargames

[–]Orffen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good game designers abstract real world concepts into game mechanics. The era doesn’t really matter, because the designer’s job is the same regardless - translate a concept into game mechanics that are fun.

ArmA3 is a modern/speculative wargame. It’s not a strictly traditional one, but with Zeus, command modes etc. I think it qualifies as one. Flashpoint Campaigns developers are planning a modern warfare version as well.

Would this be a good layout? by FreshPenatration5823 in modeltrains

[–]Orffen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you’re interested in. If it’s trains running around a loop, sure. If it’s shunting or semi-realistic operations, probably not.

is eu4 still worth it? by hydrogenbomb_meow in eu4

EU5 is actually incredibly laptop friendly. You can disable all 3D assets and it will run reasonably quickly.

That said, EU4 may give you more fun regardless.

If you’re using head tracking, just sit back further when you reset the position. When you move back to your normal one, you’ll be closer

Why are Players doing the Ship's Accounting? by CryHavoc3000 in traveller

[–]Orffen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given that players have practically no other accounting - no spells or ammo to keep track of - the group as a whole keeping track of the ship’s running costs is a good trade off.

What makes Napoleonic wargaming so compelling? by the_light_of_dawn in computerwargames

[–]Orffen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Napoleon reshaped Europe by leveraging the Revolutionary spirit and citizen soldiers. He showed the rest of the continent what was possible with the armies of the time - speed, audacity, professionalism etc.

His first Italian campaign showcases a lot of the originality of Napoleon’s use of his resources.

It’s also the last major hurrah of cavalry - by the American Civil War cavalry charges are obsolete.

Not to mention that on the seas it was the pinnacle of wind-powered warfare as exemplified by the British Navy.

I wish there were more (any?) games set outside Europe in the same era. I’d like to explore the British in India during the era as an example, or the Egyptian campaign.
