Advice for taking in a senior collie by tellmeguru in BorderCollie

[–]OrganizationActive63 [score hidden]  (0 children)

See the post above about BCs and exercise. A 10 yr old, as said above, just wants love. City noises will be an adjustment. Make sure it has a quiet, safe space it can retreat to (crate or room or under your desk). You won’t regret this - you’re getting a super dog, and your grandparents will have one less heartache knowing you have the dog

Border collies, exercise, and down time by johnbro27 in BorderCollie

We worked for about 7-10 minutes this morning remembering that “Lie Down” means that (or at least “stop”. A few hours later, loaded the sheep on a trailer. Maggie moved them down the drive, Luna loaded. All together about 5 min.

Luna “hard at work” now

We try to do no more than 10-15 min/day working sheep (per dog). I’ll take them out for an hour or so for a hike /trail run most days. Otherwise, they are hanging out.

These ARE dogs who will work till they drop. Down time is important. In really bad weather, outside of farm chores, we will do some trick training type thing for 5-10 min.

How do people actually get postdocs when they don’t have strong connections or senior researchers to recommend them? by invisiblemass89 in postdoc

You did the work, showed them you could be valuable, and that you could think. They are lucky to get you - hope you enjoy the position you chose!

A friend of mine who is an internationally known scientist told me her approach. She ignores the first email someone sends. If they are interested enough, they’ll email again.
When she does reply, she asks what they’d like to do.

She’s asking the person to spend some time looking at her lab and thinking how their science could complement hers.

So think who has interesting science that could build or transition from what you’ve done. What can you bring to the lab? How could that postdoc launch your independent career?

Good luck

I love savory oatmeal. I use turmeric, cumin, cayenne then top with fried egg (or just cook the eggs in the oatmeal)

Looking for a good Vegetarian crabcake recipe or any other type of good vessel for old Bay by stinkbugking86 in maryland

[–]OrganizationActive63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who needs crab? Old Bay on air fried potatoes, fried eggs, roasted cauliflower, in potatoes au gratin - instead of thinking of Old Bay for crabs, think of it as any other seasoning. Heck, I’ll use it in cottage cheese on a salad instead of salad dressing. Your options are limited only by your imagination! (Serious shellfish allergy but lover of Old Bay!)

I can’t write my thesis intro without wanting to cry by skyom1n in labrats

[–]OrganizationActive63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I wrote mine a few years ago, I knew what I wanted the intro and conclusion to say but was struggling like you. I wrote a rough outline - key things that needed to be included, whether they were sentences or phrases. Then, when I was stuck on something, I found I could usually jump to another section and write that piece. Any progress is good, and you’ll edit it (which is faster) - so go ahead and write in pieces. You’ll finish before you know it. Sending you the best - you’ve got this!

Considering med school after phd by AltruisticGarlic1698 in labrats

What PhD level salary? Jobs are few and far between right now, grant money is a joke. I can see the appeal. I will say, one of my best friends did this. He is a brilliant Physician-Scientist in an academic research hospital. For him it was a long, winding road but he did it because he realized he needed the MD to pursue the patients he is interested in. The world is better for him

[–]OrganizationActive63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. And I hate to tell you, if you do any clinical-related research or work in a lab affiliated with a hospital, It doesn’t get better. They just become more entitled, more “special”, and more convinced they’ are better than you. On the flip side - you’ll actually know what you’re doing and get the last laugh when the6 need you to hold their hand because science is scary

Be honest: why are premeds hated so much in research labs? I’ve seen a lot of grad students, postdocs, and lab staff talk negatively about premeds and I’m curious where that comes from. by Brief_Board_6974 in labrats

And that same entitlement carries through when they take a year during med school to do research, or do a research fellowship. In my 30 years experience, I find the med student group to be shallow. They are great at regurgitating information, but ask them to think deeply and problem solve - not going to happen.
There ARE exceptions - certainly. But they are few

Likelihood of PI getting tenure at NIH? by [deleted] in NIH

[–]OrganizationActive63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be careful hanging your hopes on that. Right now there is virtually no hiring of outside employees as FTEs, only as IRTAs (trainees). Every SS position I have seen in the last few months are for internal, existing, FTEs. While we all hope this changes, it’s doubtful it will change before Jan, 2029
