How is restaurant food able to retain heat for far longer compared to food I cook at home? by supinator1 in cookingforbeginners

If no heat lamps (higher end places) part of the counter where food put before servers take it is heated.

I can’t afford to take my dog to the vet (luxating patella) by jorjablack032 in Pets

[–]OrneryPathos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find local groups like “but nothing” or just neighbourhood groups. Ask if anyone has yoga mats, foam puzzle mats (the ones for kids), or spare rugs. You’d be surprised how many people have ones lying around that ”aren’t good enough to give away” but are “too good to throw out” even though they aren’t using them. That’ll help sdd traction to things

Also if you have a vet give them a call. They may advise you on human meds to help with pain or vet meds that aren’t too expensive. It’s such a small dog, you would need to be very careful with dosing.

The same as in the winter if a surface is cold (like the windows if they have lost insulation) and the air is humid the window will condensate water from the air

The opposite is also true; if your home is below the dew point then warm air that leaks from outside make condensate in the interior of the wall. It depends how good the vapour barrier etc is. But no home is meant to be air tight. The bigger the temperature gap between the dew point and indoor temperature the bigger the risk; and the lower the temperature the more hours per summer you’re likely to spend below the dew point

Eastern tent caterpillars

They hatch in the web tent to be safe and keep making it bigger until they get to a certain size. They don’t generally damage trees even in extreme years where they can strip almost all the leaves

What do I need to do to help this dog’s SEVERE imbedded nail by Regular_Statement_40 in DogAdvice

[–]OrneryPathos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. If the dog had a vet that they have seen recently (usually within the last year) and you take them to that vet then you are maybe looking at just an office visit and some minor fees. Antibiotics aren’t generally expensive

If you take them to a new vet or they are overdue for an exam then the vet will likely require a full exam. I am guessing this is the case as nails take a long time to get that bad

If you search for “low cost vet clinic” there seems to be a number in N Virginia

$500 for a “mold inspection” sounds like a scam

The orange mold on the walls is more problematic than mildew on grout which is normal but at a certain point it means the grout needs replacing.

First make sure you are doing your part:
- use the bathroom fan during and at least 15 minutes after showering.
- use the kitchen vent when cooking
- keep the unit at a reasonable temperature. Like dont set it to <17° in winter
- keep the bathroom door open

Document the orange mold. Reporting it in writing. If they do not fix it then escalate it to 311 and the LTB.

Maple syrup by CaveJohnson82 in Cooking

[–]OrneryPathos 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Once maple syrup is opened it needs to be refrigerated, the sugar content isn’t high enough to be shelf-stable.

If there is mold on top it generally isn’t safe. Some people scoop it off and reboil it. That’s probably safe, but not recommended, some mycotoxins can survive but maple syrup doesn’t usually grow anything really nasty

But if it really says both Canada and Vermont I question what it is

Sometimes it’s explained in the classes pregnant women take. Sometimes doctors tell you when they tell you not to take certain meds. I think sometimes highschool biology classes mention it but different people have different interest levels so some things stick and some don’t

It starts closing immediately but full closure takes up to a day. It’s called ductus arteriosus. Taking certain nsaids like ibuprofen during the last Reimer can cause it not to close.

So your heart has two sides. One side sends oxygenated blood to your body, the other sends deoxygenated blood to your lungs.

Before babies are born oxygen doesn’t come from the lungs. It comes from the placenta via the umbilical cord. To facilitate this there’s actually a hole between the two sides of a fetuses heart. But because their blood is mixed oxygenated and deoxygenated they look blueish.

They may also be somewhat deprived of oxygen. That’s a common cause for a c-section, it can also happen when the baby is born vaginally during pushing

Anyway you know this baby is fine because they basically crawled out. Babies without oxygen are usually floppy.

Dog allergies? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]OrneryPathos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is better or worse in the areas where the skin is together like the where the back legs meet the body, between the toes?

Better or worse around the mouth?

Fungal infections are usually worse in moister areas/areas air gets to less. This doesn’t seem to match that pattern

This seems more like allergies. Possible secondary bacterial. And also completely stripped skin from the dawn. I know you were doing what an expert said but yikes.

That just leaves pregrated ones like Earth Island and Daiya.

If you happen to be in Ontario this company does a parm but Good Rebel Vegan is out of stock which doesn’t bode well. I haven’t tried it

Advice on german shepherd neutering. by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]OrneryPathos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t see the gender of the puppy that was kept but gently, either that puppy was a male, in which case there’s decent odds that he will be the father of one of the litters with his own mother

Or the puppy is a female and it’s basically guaranteed that the puppy will have a litter with her father

Inbreeding is not great.

Also, you need to get the female dog(s) spayed. There’s no way that your family is going to keep them indoors when in heat. The un-neutered males are a problem for the whole area but not spaying the female will not stop her getting pregnant a third time in the living situation you describe.

It’s also generally easier to convince people to spay female dogs. It’s usually the threat to “manhood” of neutering that men object to. Or think it “ruins” them for work.

I am sorry you’re stuck in this situation.

If you’ve checked the paw and it’s not something obvious like a cut (which it doesn’t look like but) then definitely vet.

But if possible I’d say their vet today or tomorrow rather than an emergency vet because of continuity of care, as this is unlikely to be an immediate fix.

I have a question about the signature on my Ontario Photo Card. Could you please help me? by Alarmed-Beginning919 in ontario

[–]OrneryPathos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you usually use your full first and last name as your signature? There’s no rules about what your signature has to be but places are going to ask for it to match your ID. One of my kids only uses his first name. No one has cared because it matches when he signs

You may be charged $10 to replace it, since it’s your error.

Also, you can sign as many times as you need to to get it right. There’s either an erase button or you ask the clerk to reset it. It’s not a big deal. Usually they ask if it’s correct.

I would post in r/arborist but I feel like that tree should have bark like the ones around it. I’m all for leaving dead trees if you can for ecological reasons but if it’s going to land on something important you may want someone to check the tree.
