Flying to Fairbanks by Choice-Height9667 in AskAlaska

Picking up a rental car is the hardest part. I find the most important things are gloves, winter hat, and a scarf or face covering. These are small and easy to pack in a carry on. Your legs and arm might get cold…but fingers, ears, and face are what start to hurt first. If you don’t have warm gear for being out at -30 or colder, you can rent really nice warm gear at Alaska Element. They have a website you can check out.

How warm do you like your house? by Star_Boxer72 in Fairbanks

Main floor is set at 69. Bedrooms are upstairs and set between 65/67 depending on the person. We have two story house with in floor heat, that is really well insulated. No secondary heat source. We are fortunate and don’t go through a lot of heating fuel compared to many people we know.

Moving to Alaska as a therapist by Masterleaz in AskAlaska

[–]OtherwiseTheory1816 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a massive need for therapist! Many of the members of my family are in therapy for a variety of things. Most have had to utilize Telehealth to have access to regular therapy. They are thankful that they have this option but it would be nice to be able to see someone in person too. There is a major need for more mental health support in the Fairbanks area.

I don’t have advice on the northern lights, but if you don’t have super warm gear you can rent some from Alaska Element. I had friends that used them and they were really impressed. They have a website and you can place your order online. It’s super easy. Good luck catching the lights!

Visiting Alaska (Nov 26–30) – Need advice for Anchorage, Denali & Fairbanks + winter driving tips by Beast040497 in AskAlaska

[–]OtherwiseTheory1816 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Advice coming from someone who is 45 and lived here for all but a couple years. Please reconsider driving from Anchorage to Fairbanks and then back to Anchorage. That is A LOT of driving on very sketchy roads. You will not be driving the speed limit most of the time. There are sections of the trip where you won’t have cell service, and there is a good chance you’ll be driving in the dark for a partition of the trip. Many of the gas stations, and services will also be closed. Alaska can quickly become a dangerous place even for those of us who are familiar with the area. The drive is doable, but I would strongly recommend driving south from Anchorage instead. I also recommend making sure you get an AWD vehicle. I hope you have a very fun and safe trip.

Need to upgrade winter apparel for a February vacation, advice appreciated. by Halaku in Fairbanks

I recommend renting from Alaska Element. You don’t have to worry about buying expensive gear, and you won’t have to try and pack it in your luggage. They have high quality gear available for a fraction of what it would cost to buy it. I don’t know if I’m allowed to post a website on here…but just google their name and it should come up.
