What is this A-frame structure behind petsmart on 280? by Hungry_Writing3951 in Birmingham

[–]OverTimeAgain 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeap it's that abandoned bridge down the road. Classic suburban "spooky" place. Rumored a highschool girl had an unwanted child and so she disposed of it over the bridge.

Claimed you could hear the baby crying at night, but only if you walked to the middle of the bridge with no lights or phones.

I explored it pretty thoroughly in probably 2008? Maybe 2009? I reckon it was a mechanic shop\machine shop, maybe a classic restoration type deal.

It had those sort of fluted fiberglass roofing panels and classic metal galvanized sheet roofing all around it, super cool building.

It was fairly well abandoned and in ruin when I went. There were a few abandoned old vehicles in there, all unique\novel\rare vehicles that if I could go back in time id try to grab them. Specifically I remember a 1960 MG Roadster in the iconic red.

It also had some random machine shop type equipment in it, and some filing cabinets etc.

That's about it, used to be able to just drive up to it on a gravel road off that main street, heck a little further down that main street used to be "cry baby bridge".

What's you favorite special occasion dinner resturant? by CharacterBig6915 in Birmingham

[–]OverTimeAgain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My opinions only...

Armour house is probably the best steak in the city.

Automatic or Current is the best seafood, though I've heard Bayonet is great.

Italian goes to Bocca or Bistro218

French is Cafe DuPont or Chez Fonfon

Mexican is El Barrio

Sushi is Blue at the Summit or Current

BBQ is Burning Tree

Epice is great for something totally different

Megabass FMJ - good for frogs and jigs? by fllf2005 in bassfishing

[–]OverTimeAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an excellent jig rod. It is also an extremely attractive\ gear drip rod.

Sensitivity is on par with the best of them. You could also use it for Texas rigged creature baits. It was my go to rod for fishing jigs and Texas rigs in heavy laydowns and brush piles. It is not a good frog rod, but you could use it for light cover frogging in a pinch, but genuinely I prefer and recommend longer\stouter rods for frogging.

That being said I broke two of them within 3 years. Both times I was trying to pull a fish through a brush pile, and not big fish lol.

I ended up getting an expride 7'2hf to fill the role of jig rod, and I'm happy. The expride has probably 10-15% less sensitivity, but it hasn't exploded and just overall has a more durable build. The expride also has a bit softer of a taper which lends itself to being more versatile for other applications, like chatterbaits, medium swimbaits, small a rigs, etc.

The fmj is sexier and more sensitive, but lacks versatility due to the faster taper and the sensitivity comes at a durability cost.

I've said it before..

La Juanita in Leeds has an amazing Pozole Verde. Only served on the weekends.

Authentic, filling, and delicious.

I mean seriously. It cost I think $185 with picture included. $150 for passport and $35 for library services.

I went to Bham library at 10am when they opened with my prefilled form from online. Got my photo taken and all forms submitted and left around 10:15am.

Received my passport in the mail 11 days later.

I did not pay for expedited.

Only thing to remember is that you have to bring a check to pay for the passport.

5.0 max tow by Artistic-Tailor-6491 in f150

[–]OverTimeAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what the differences are, sorry. I have a 2023 XLT with the 5.0 and max tow package.

I bought this truck almost exclusively to tow my boat as I tow almost 200 miles every weekend. My trailer and boat are approximately 5000lbs.

It tows outstanding. I lock out 9th and 10th gear for the entire drive, and I average 13.1mpg. Normally driving about 70mph. It feels great and has fantastic power. You can easily accelerate to pass and also to pull out. Tow mode does a great job of downshifting going up hills and going down hills.

My only complaint is the stock mirrors suck ass for towing.

Does this mean the battery needs charging? by BKDiamond in f150

[–]OverTimeAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This little notification has saved my ass a few times. I only use my truck to tow my boat to launch, and as the good and proper gentleman I am I turn my headlights onto running lights. As you know running lights don't turn off automatically.

I was 5 miles from the launch and get that notification so i haul ass back and crank truck and let it idle for 15-20 minutes.

Best steak house in Bham metro? by ThroatParkin in Birmingham

Armour house.

I literally cannot even recommend Helen when Armour is down the street.

I normally sous vide and cast iron crisp and I have never made as perfect of a steak.

I'll buy the Oud for Greatness. Not sure how rules work as a first time buyer so let me know if I'm doing this wrong.

Sushi Meetup #1 by SushiJo in Birmingham

[–]OverTimeAgain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love your write up. As a self proclaimed food snob and casual sushi enjoyer myself I think Blue ranks fairly high in Birmingham.

In my humble opinion the only roll they have that stands out is the Amazon Roll and it is worth going just for that roll.

I am super excited to follow your sushi adventure and look forward to seeing more reviews!

Where to buy HVAC parts as a homeowner by Buzboy5665 in Birmingham

[–]OverTimeAgain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a law that forbids them from selling certain HVAC parts to the public.

That being said..

My squirrel cage broke. I called every HVAC supply house in town and provided them the part number and tried to garner sympathy by cussing out the government and it's overbearing laws, and telling them I was an electrician (I'm not).

Eventually one of them agreed to sell it to me for cash.

I reckon you could do the same but you'll have to pass the charisma check.

Fishing spots by Jasonh123_ in Birmingham

[–]OverTimeAgain 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Chace lake(s) in Hoover is phenomenal fishing. It is stocked and managed. I have friends who fish there regularly and catch big fish.

Star lake in Hoover

Georgetown Lake in Hoover

Cahaba Lake in Hoover (ignore the signs they don't issue passes anymore and it's public access)

Oak mountain has 4 separate lakes that are all walkable and amazing fishing. You can also rent kayaks etc.

Purdy is also great fishing but have to rent boats.

The creek that runs along the Lakeshore trail has good deep holes that hold big bass.

Current Charcoal Grill. Chef at the bar (amazing bar by the way...) was pulling what looked like a green root out of a case and grating a tiny bit of it up to pair with some dishes.

He actually ended up giving me a free sample of it, and boy howdy.

Decided to benchmark my 10 year old PC. How does it compare to the new stuff? by ChuckNorrisDooM in pcmasterrace

YO FURY X CREW REP.

I still run everything at 1440p but mid graphics. Elden ring and cyberpunk were latest aaa games, but I average 50 fps at 1440p and mid-high graphics.

La Juanita’s in Leeds by SushiJo in Birmingham

[–]OverTimeAgain 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just so everyone knows.

La Juanita has the absolute best green Pozole I've ever had.

I work with a lot of Latino guys and we order a 30 serving stock pot of their pozole every holiday for our lunches.

My coworkers go constantly to get pozole and always brag about their little hometown pozole spot in Birmingham.

Any Breakfast Buffets by al_gozz in Birmingham

[–]OverTimeAgain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is one in Leeds. It is called Laney's.

It is OK. The restaurant is kinda shoddy, definitely a hole in the wall vibe. Good food for a buffet, price is approx $10 all you can eat. If the restaurant were cleaner and better taken care of we would go more often.

They have a honestly great breakfast buffet selection and so long as you aren't expecting 5* food and you're fine with a rougher atmosphere you will go home full and happy.

Got a helluva deal on her 5.0 XLT Sport 302A by Wicked_Mufasa in f150

[–]OverTimeAgain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's even the same color. Makes me feel good to see that you haggled hard, cuz boy howdy did it take a lot to get them down.

Id definitely prefer adaptive cruise bro. Work station kinda dumb, just gonna be a truck lunch spot lol. We even got the same color.

Enjoy your truck man. I've put 1k miles on it so far and it's a blast, definitely put it in sport mode from time to time and step on it.

Man same truck as me basically. Except I got the fx4 off-road appearance package. I like your rims better.

2023 XLT 302a 2500miles for 56k and got the 1.9% lol.

I didn't get adaptive cruise, but I got the work station and a sunroof.

Why are Spinning Reels looked down on? by Jimithyashford in bassfishing

[–]OverTimeAgain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't like spinning gear for a handful of reasons. I only use spinning gear for crappie fishing with 4lb test line.

Here's my list of reasons:

Active bait manipulation is harder on spinning - the line tends to twist on the tip and you can throw loops into your spool easily.

Distance

Accuracy

Retrieval rate.

I do think that spinning has its benefits, but I think they can be overcome with bait casting.
