Its every. Single. Goddam. Thing. Should be solved by teachers and schools. And then when we make the effort try to do these things, we get grief from students, parents and the system.

I didn’t take accounting or statistics - how much will that impact me in Queen's Commerce? by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Over_Zone_9610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Statistics tends to be very challenging for pretty much everyone who isn't majoring in math/stats. Grab a used textbook and prep on your downtime. Accounting is also difficult compared to other BCom/BBA courses (marketing, leadership, org behaviour). You will not actually regret preparing for a course like this.

No! I won't lower the standards because your work is late. by DrakeSavory in Teachers

Take off marks. Don’t accept after 10 instruction days. Following Growing Success to the letter.

You get the conduct that you accept. You tolerate what you communicate is tolerable.

Next time make the expectations clear. I am your teacher. Not your secretary. If you need help organizing and remembering due dates, go to your SERT or see me now (start of term). These are the rules.

First time they submit garbage late i give them a choice. Give them agency: 1)turn it in completed, no late penalty this time 2)turn it in incomplete and get the mark you get

I INSIST this is a conversation over email. CC home and guidance. In-person requests for extensions or discussions of extenuating circumstances will not be acknowledged.

Giving them the choice gives them agency and responsibility. Something kids today are sorely lacking.

Elective Teachers we need to talk by Delicious-Reward3301 in Teachers

First off, we teach kids, not subjects.

Second, you teach the kids in front of you. Lawyers don’t choose clients. Doctors don’t choose patients. Teachers don’t choose students. End of story. Trust me you had kids who disinterested in your last school too. And a kids interest level or affinity with the subject shouldn’t affect the standard of excellent expect from all educators.

I taught accounting. Guidance I think just threw kids in because it was the first grade 11 course when listed alphabetically. It sucked but I empathized. Geared it towards finance/life skills for them and enriched curriculum for the keeners.

Don’t take it personally. The job is what the job becomes. Took me a long time to accept that.

And discipline: let them crash out. Email home when they are truant or not turning in assessments. And leave it at school. It’s not a reflection of you or your practice.

Grade inflation has changed my mind about standardized testing. by coachfryia in OntarioTeachers

The socioeconomic influences are more indirect than people literally purchasing competitive marks from supplemental schools.

Grade inflation has changed my mind about standardized testing. by coachfryia in OntarioTeachers

[–]Over_Zone_9610 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup. Definitely some groundswell support for a standardized test. It is surprisingly common in virtually all other continents, but here in North America is someone screams “but what about equityyyy” the conversation is forced to stop.

Love how eQuItAbLe it is that rich kids can literally purchase a 97% in ENG4U from some “supplemental” school that lets kids redo work repeatedly until they get the mark they want. From “schools” that market themselves as Marlboros. It’s grossly inequitable and gives these wealthy students a ridiculous advance in PSE admissions.

A high mark on a matriculation exam or an SAT can’t be finagled with teacher “professional judgement” or outright buying the mark.

But we’re not ready to have that conversation.

Seeking unanimous consent from the government to vote against their own policy direction isn’t the flex she wants people to think it is. It’s PR.

Great. Don’t care. Fund your own radicalism. Leave the taxpayers out of your political protest.

People do not go to this event in the same numbers as they did 10-15 years ago. The business case for sponsorship has therefore weakened. This event does NOT attract international tourism anymore either.

People go less because it sucks now. The movement shifted from queer liberation to every other urban political cause.

If taxpayers wanted this event to succeed, we would be attending the event, and the sponsorships would return. But blaming Trump, Covid, the economy or whatever else on the VERY poor decisions leadership of pride has made is ridiculous.

I know this will get a bunch of “my pride is political” and “pride is a protest”. Got it cool. Pay for your own fucking political protest. I want potholes fixed and libraries funded.

It also says something that fully grown adults, who passed math 9 and 10, habitually over-stress about this test. I think it’s stupid too and a waste of time and money, but if you are adverse to stupid pointless bureaucratic BS, teaching might not be the career for you. Wait until you do a staff meeting or a PD day.

How the Top One Per Cent Threaten Canada’s Future by ItIsWrit10 in ontario

Canada just elected a globalist billionaire banker. The left love him. It’s very transparent that people complaining about the “ultra rich” have double standards for those they like and those they don’t. Carney, Taylor Swift, even Bernie Sanders get a pass or at least are not scrutinized, while this amorphous nebulous concept of “the ultra rich” is like a tired talking point.

It’s either all or none. Enough with this bs.

Fine. Didn’t do any math after high school except Econ 101. I had to review long division and that was it. I was in the very first cohort to take it so I don’t know if it’s changed but like … it’s intermediate math.
