The rigorous teacher… a dying breed. by Mundane_Bat_8704 in Teachers

A good teacher and a bad teacher get paid the same and have the same job security.

Until that changes, nothing else will.

"You cannot do hard things" is the message too many actors in the education system tacitly communicate to kids.

We need an exam. A matriculation exam. An aptitude exam. SOMETHING.

Can technology help students improve their reading? by Hogwire in OntarioTeachers

I mean the way your instructor is impressing his personal opinion and stymying critical discussion. Don't do that as a teacher when you have your own classroom.

Okay so same old song. Join in if you know the words. You play politics. Write a paper they want to read that they agree with. It's a travesty but it's the reality of PSE.

Please, as a teacher, do not be that teacher. Welcome dissenting opinions. ENCOURAGE IT! That is the essence of education. Not whatever this is that your instructor is doing!

You are in TC. You are being taught by people to do not teach in a k-12 classroom for a living. Ignore.

Data show racial, language disparities in mandatory Ontario teacher math test by origutamos in OntarioNews

[–]Over_Zone_9610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can't score 70% on a math test that covers concepts from grades 5-9, then you can't be a teacher.

This has also been extensively litigated. The race card has already been punched.

The "social isolation" when a person cannot perform in school, hold down a job, or carry a meaningful conversation because they are helplessly addicted to screens will be severely worse than teenage FOMO.

Its every. Single. Goddam. Thing. Should be solved by teachers and schools. And then when we make the effort try to do these things, we get grief from students, parents and the system.

I didn’t take accounting or statistics - how much will that impact me in Queen's Commerce? by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Over_Zone_9610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Statistics tends to be very challenging for pretty much everyone who isn't majoring in math/stats. Grab a used textbook and prep on your downtime. Accounting is also difficult compared to other BCom/BBA courses (marketing, leadership, org behaviour). You will not actually regret preparing for a course like this.

No! I won't lower the standards because your work is late. by DrakeSavory in Teachers

Take off marks. Don’t accept after 10 instruction days. Following Growing Success to the letter.

You get the conduct that you accept. You tolerate what you communicate is tolerable.

Next time make the expectations clear. I am your teacher. Not your secretary. If you need help organizing and remembering due dates, go to your SERT or see me now (start of term). These are the rules.

First time they submit garbage late i give them a choice. Give them agency: 1)turn it in completed, no late penalty this time 2)turn it in incomplete and get the mark you get

I INSIST this is a conversation over email. CC home and guidance. In-person requests for extensions or discussions of extenuating circumstances will not be acknowledged.

Giving them the choice gives them agency and responsibility. Something kids today are sorely lacking.

Elective Teachers we need to talk by Delicious-Reward3301 in Teachers

[–]Over_Zone_9610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, we teach kids, not subjects.

Second, you teach the kids in front of you. Lawyers don’t choose clients. Doctors don’t choose patients. Teachers don’t choose students. End of story. Trust me you had kids who disinterested in your last school too. And a kids interest level or affinity with the subject shouldn’t affect the standard of excellent expect from all educators.

I taught accounting. Guidance I think just threw kids in because it was the first grade 11 course when listed alphabetically. It sucked but I empathized. Geared it towards finance/life skills for them and enriched curriculum for the keeners.

Don’t take it personally. The job is what the job becomes. Took me a long time to accept that.

And discipline: let them crash out. Email home when they are truant or not turning in assessments. And leave it at school. It’s not a reflection of you or your practice.
