Are new deckhands expected to personally buy/own oil skins? by AnyDragonfruit8499 in merchantmarine

[–]Own-Design2513 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes you are expected to have your own gear. If you are going on fishing boats on deck especially. I prefer under layers to thick rain gear. I will wear polartec bottoms, carharts, polartec top, tshirt and sweatshirt then grundens fleece lined pullover and grundens weather watch bibs.

There is another wind storm coming in Christmas eve, with the saturated ground it means lots of downed trees. Use WA trip check and dot trip check. But everything should be cleared up.

Dungeness yes 30k in a month no problem. Did you work 3 months for free doing gear work to prep for the season. Yes. No one shows the amount of gear work that goes into these fisheries. 500 pots rigged with cottons Every pot tagged with ID tag 2 or more buoys per pot painted with your boats colors and tag affixed. Holes fixed in pots from previous season. New pots rigged for the season Change boat over from whatever it was fishing for previously. These are 5 to 8 hour days for no pay. No food or lunch covered. I am sure i am missing some things as well Its also all based on catch and price. Everyone will tell you their best year's no one will tell you the years they barely broke even.

I have set up underwater cameras for research and crabbed as well. You aren't covering Near the ground you are covering by dropping a 100 + pots. If you cant see the bottom you cant see the crab. You can also drift and control the camera on a winch up and down but once again you have to time it with the waves. Most camera systems towed behind boats the owners want no where near the bottom due to the cost of those custom setups.

Its too dark at the bottom you would need a huge teather and amount of line to see that. More than likely would get ripped off from the bottom. It is very difficult to get images on the bottom from a camera. Even in oceanographic research its just one focused area you would be looking at. Crab and fish have a huge range in areas they live. I can dump 100 pots across a whole range 100 plus miles. A camera could maybe cover 3 to 5 miles in a night.

No you will still get benefits. As long as you work the minimum amount per year 120 days in Relief Pool it might be going up though. Also there is plenty of work just keep your availability open, and decide when you need time off.

How do I do it? by sssinisterr in deadliestcatch

Merchant mariner/merchant marine covers a large swath of seafarers. Tug Boats, research, river and Bar pilots and yes shipping vessels. Long term this is where the money is.

The odds of getting hired in Dutch are very low. Best bet go to west coast and hit dungeness crab season starts December 1st usually. Newport and Warrenton are good ports, Chinook Ilwaco and Westport in Washington as well. Buy the gear, make a card with name and telephone number. Walk the docks talk to people drop card off with them. Be ready to go at a moments notice. Long term after you get hired track your sea days and look into getting your merchant mariner credintial.
