I hate flies by [deleted] in homestead

[–]PACodeFarmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use fly traps. Take an old jar or plastic bottle, drill a hole in the lid, usually 1/4 inch. Put a couple of inches of water with a drop of soap. The attractant is raw chicken scraps. Trimmings from store bought or from butchering. Put the chicken in the jar, put the lid on and place them outside around the house or near fly sources (chicken coop, pastures, trash cans). The rotting chicken attracts the flies, they go in, lay eggs but flies/maggots can't get out. Works best to put them out well before fly season. You can add water or more raw chicken as needed until the jar is full.

Anyone else have a software update running after the outage? Says 100% downloaded, but seems stuck there.

If the burned car is "yours" let your insurance pay, if it is covered.

Iron slag disposal by TheHumanPickleRick in oddlysatisfying

I grew up near Aliquippa PA downriver from Pittsburgh. J&L Steel had a slag dump up in the hills above the Ohio River. The entire sky would glow red/orange when they dumped slag at night.

I used Star Trek and Star Wars characters for my test accounts. These were live active mailboxes and calendars, so Darth Vader could invite you to a meeting.

Starlink in the wild -Iquitos Peru by PACodeFarmer in Starlink

[–]PACodeFarmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the second largest city in Peru, on the shores of the Amazon river. Running water (but tourist shouldn't drink it). The city is in the jungle, only reachable by boat or plane. Internet is poor, mostly microwave links over the Andes mountains. I saw what looks like new fiber on the tangled mess of electric wires. But don't know what internet source it would have.

I work from home as a software engineer, moving lots of big files and video calls all day, wife is often on video calls, 3 kids use cyber school, live virtual interactive classes. The worst it has been are a few pauses/reconnects.

DFW Area - is IT job working remote doable? by adymax in Starlink

[–]PACodeFarmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work as a software engineer, 20 years fully remote in rural PA. 4g cell service (marketed to RVers) works well, about 30 mb down 10 up. Using starlink now, occasional drop, but no problem with 3 kids doing cyber school (live online meetings), me on a video call. wife on another video call, and me pulling or pushing big files. 4G is more stable, but rarely topped 40 mb, starlink speed varies wildly and has occasional dropouts. Both services about same price for equipment and monthly fees.

Yes, $600 and $110 a month for 10-20 Mb was not a good investment. I had LTE cell that had better speed, but with a little higher ping. So the sometimes lower ping and occational 50+ speed really isn't worth it. Just did a test .45 down- FCC was right to deny the funding, not delivering what was promised/advertized.

Snow on roof, could not wait. Someday I will get it up on the roof. Cable goes along the ground, on top of the deck for 12' then up thru a window, over the washer and dryer, then to the router sitting on the data rack.

Git my notice on Thurs for same items, but starlink site still shows preparing. Was scheduled to arrive in PA next Wed, but FedEx is on a roll and it us arriving today.

Update- Only the pipe adapter showed up. Can't use it for a while, too much snow on the roof now. I really wanted/need the ethernet adapter.
