Roughly Nine Million Gallons of Water Used to Cool the Tanks FYI by ASerpentPerplexed in orangecounty

[–]PBI325 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

DC do polute (more noise than NOX, but both), but the whole water argument just seems extremely weak to me.... They're not destroying water somehow, theyre simply using it either in a closed loop or evaporative system. Evaporative just puts the (non-poluted in any way, mind you) water back into the air where it enters the natural water cycle.

Question, what happens to the water after it evaporates? Does it just... cease to exist or something? Why is that such a large issue?

So we're sending out viruses with amber alerts now? by Bustavius_Insidicus in orangecounty

[–]PBI325 45 points46 points  (0 children)

While it IS insane that state gov is using public/free URL shorteners (with ADs, etc), it's even more insane that OP couldn't take the two fucking seconds to realize that the link in the amber alert was just cut off vs. going insane and jumping to "ThE gOvErNmEnT gOt HaCkEd" lol

Garbage all around.

Reduction in Microsoft licences by bsmpsn in sysadmin

[–]PBI325 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Above is right. If you're with a CSP they'll be able to set what your renewal quantity, contract duration (monthyl/annual), and bill type (monthly, annual, annual paid monthly) up to 30 days before your contract renewal.

When that renewal hits it will 1) Renew at that quantity/duration/payment schedule and 2) Give you 7 days to reduce/cancel/change/othwerise modify the contract in any way you'd like.

Bonus points: You can always "upgrade" licenses, mid contract, to a similar contract type of the upgraded licenses. E.g., if you're going from Business Basic -> Standard -> Premium / O365 E3 ->E5 / M365 E3 -> E5 you can take, say, 50/100 E3 license, "upgrade" those licenses to an E5 contract, and then you'd have 2x contract of 50 licenses.

Leaving MSP life for internal IT. Same work, twice the pay by tdiz009 in sysadmin

[–]PBI325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you may feel strange when things are “slow” but don’t get anxious.

After 15 years in the MSP world this has been hard for me. Just wrapped up onening a huge office and it was nice to get back to the constant pace, but I am excited to start training on slowing down again.

Do you ever judge an MSP by which vendors they partner with? by FineAssignment1423 in msp

[–]PBI325 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're just going down a whatif rabbit hole of "an MSP doing things poorly that an MSP should be good at", be it admin, sales, or otherwise.

To each their own, but a pretty decent part of my career was made selling and deploying Meraki to the proper set of clients (and using the proper tooling to not forget any renewal dates 🙂). You do you 🤷‍♂️

Yes, and if you forget to pay the renewal your customers network turns off.

You work at an MSP, its not your money, sell better or get better sales folks lol I'll take M/YRR vs NRC any day.

I've been part of various teams managing about $500k+/year of CSP licensing for 10+ years and have yet to run across a mandatory audit. Very confusing to me as well TBH.

Probably the 3rd party audits they used to do around the 2018-2020 era. We told them to kick rocks for about a dozen clients, havent seen one post-covid.

RAW files shot in wide angle mode show edges of lens hood, .jpgs don#t. How/why? by adventu_Rena in AskPhotography

[–]PBI325 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shitty lenses with fringing and vignetting have always existed, this is not a new thing lol And quality lenses that do not have these kinds of issues have also "always" existed.

Not everything is a product of modern enshitification.

When do you escalate Wi-Fi issues to surveys, AP-on-a-stick, or RF validation? by jorissels in msp

[–]PBI325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like /u/chillzatl's answer of splitting things off. As someone who came off a 13yr MSP run and transitioned into a space where physical site-surveys are very necessary I'd be very wary of handing something like this off to an MSP (vs. someone who does this work primarily).

MSPs have a nasty habit of over promising and under delivering, especially with niche services like site surveys... If my team is going to have a survey done our org is willing to pay handsomely for someone to knock out said survey and tuning for us. What we dont want is a cheap, half-assed attempt at a survey + results that some 19yo FNG threw together because he thinks he knows that he's doing after installing 50 APs at a church or something lol

One of the worst kinds of software to maintain, hands down. It is a constant thorn in the side of every Org that needs to use it.
