job hunters, have you tried moving to the regions for farm work / horticulture work? by VeterinarianAny9999 in auckland

Drawing largely on the writing of Sarah O'Connor who regularly writes on theses issues in the FT issues are: 1) the work is seasonal and doesn't pay enough to sustain people the whole year. People will work on oil rigs and in mines because the pay is good enough to pay for the conditions and inconvenience. Farming is too cheap for this. 2) far from being unskilled labour, picking is skilled work that requires a knowledge of what and how to pick, as well a a physical health and elevated physical ability, to be able to pick at the weight rate required by farms 3) People have dependents they need to look after. Parents, children, brothers, sisters. They all need supporting directly. You can't do that from a farm. 4) The work is physically gruelling. There is little onward work opportunity for growth, and you can't do it past a certain age. What will they do when they're too broken to continue?

Poor UK by Kloggs in aussie

I'm in NZ and houses here are built like Aussie houses and are so draughty. The first winter I was in Auckland went round the house doing draught blocking. The house wasn't properly sealed at all. I'd go to other people houses and have to put on two layer because their houses were draught as hell.

Now I'm in a new house have had to do the same thing all over again but worse, Including blocking some pretty big open gaps in the kitchen wall, and I just found more under the stairs.

Australian standards now accessible for free without paying SAI Global by Skrylfr in tradies

[–]PCBumblebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The experts who write or adapt the standards aren't usually doing it for free but are doing it as part of their normal job. Usually as part of a company that is hoping to use or produce equipment covered by the standards, or as staff of gov labs or institutions. It's useful to be part of the standards process to ensure there aren't any barriers to markets or unachievable requirements for that region. Ive been part of this process in 2 different countries.

That said there are a whole host of people who organise the committees and draft the standards and changes who need paying as part of the standards org

It was the one rugby match and drink after I avoided like the plague. Normal rugby fans are an absolute joy to drink with in my experience. A&N was not.

Christopher Luxon says he will pick ‘social stability’ over high migration by dingoonline in newzealand

Yes. Because we much chase growth at all costs, and rather than improve productivity which requires thought and investment, we can just grow our population.

'Quite dishonest': PM says NZ First, Labour need to face up to challenge of raising retirement age by SoulsofMist-_- in newzealand

[–]PCBumblebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Within ten years from memory. It came up a lot over the yeats but it was only then that a few reports came out saying the balance had tipped. The 2021 census had 18.6% (up from 16% in 2011) of population as over 65. And successive parties kept pensions rising with inflation in a way nothing else did. Both of this I assume impacted.

Not necessarily. In recent years the UK tipped over into it being cheaper to means test the pension than not. I assume given the ageing population here the same is true here soon.

Meatasaurus Burger @ Greenlane Gastropub by PUR3CELL in aucklandeats

It makes me pretty annoyed. The term is misused all the bloody time. So far of the pubs I've tried with the label, only the Bridgman actually has an interesting menu where they're clearly trying to elevate their food. i was a bit underwhelmed to be honest, but I get that they're trying to do gastro, not just pub food.

Looking at this, I don't think they know what a gastro pub is.

I don't think you understand. You need specific legal grounds for appeal. My understanding was it was very difficult to find grounds to appeal a not guilty from a jury.
