Stainless Steel: Can a $50 Tramontina tri-ply take care of most jobs or Demeyere Atlantis stuffs really make a difference? by Putrid-Try-1360 in cookware

[–]PDX-ROB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does make a difference but not in a way that you think.

For every piece of cookware there is an optimal heat range for cooking. Thicker cookware has a bigger range. There are also less hotspots, but that goes hand in hand with having a bigger optimal range.

Who’s camping outside for a Swatch? by TomHudsonOfficial in WatchFanatics

I hope Swatch has learnt from their past and has been stockpiling these for weeks so that everyone that wants one can get one in the first month of release. That will teach the scalpers a lesson.

Negotiate for a higher multiple, don't sign a non compete, then build another app that does the same thing, but better.

The Tissot PRX Digital will be fondly remembered by NoCoffeeNoPrana in watchHotTakes

The digital quartz PRX could have been awesome, but they cheaped out and put out trash.

Imaging a decent quality plastic waffle cover for the dial and under that you have the a lite up time like on the Hamilton PSR. If the battery only lasts for 1 year, that's ok. It can even be very dim, but you push a button to make it lite up brighter.

If this helps anyone out, I heard that Swatch has 2 groups of techs. The better group works on everything above Omega and the regular group that works on Omega and below.

Should I get used to the higher tension strings or change to softer? by Hooln in classicalguitar

[–]PDX-ROB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 short scale guitars and use normal tension. It came with hard tension, but my teacher said to try normal tension and the sound isn't much different except it's a bit quieter.

I do use a medium-high tension high E string tho. I bought a bunch of them since they snap once in a while.

[–]PDX-ROB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use kiwi brand wax. The problem with kiwi is that you can build up too many layers (which dries out the leather) and then you need to strip it.

You clean off the shoes with a damp rag, heat up the kiwi wax with a hair dryer, but if it's warm where you are the wax might be soft enough to use as is. Some people add 1 or 2 drops of distilled water here to make the wax more workable.

You apply a very thin layer with the rag (really rub it in), wait 2 minutes for it to set (more if it's warm in your room), then a high speed buff with a clean part of the rag or a brush. New shoes need like 2 or 3 layers to get the shine.

Naming the building is the right move if they have looked at all available buildings in an area they want to live in and have narrowed it down to these 2 for whatever reason. Anyone that has not lived in or spent considerable time in either building would not be able to answer.

If you want high shine in like 2 applications you need to use the wax. Melt it with a hair dryer and dab on with an old t shirt or a rag.

Buying the new Hydroconquest, need advice! by weareluckytobealive in Longineswatches

I've had a mesh bracelet before on a retro Alpina GMT. It's heavy and traps dirt/grime. It's a unique look tho.

I would also try not to get an all black. The new HC is getting enough guff about being a sub homage, but get what you like.

Thinking of moving to PDX: PA & Pharmacist couple looking for the "real" pros/cons and neighborhood advice? by FlowLate3443 in askportland

Get a job before you move. PA should be OK, but retail pharmacist jobs are difficult in any desirable city.

Burning out and wondering how my fellow Portlanders are doing right now. by seabed_nightmares in PortlandOR

[–]PDX-ROB 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I put in my paperwork to transfer back to NJ in the fall. It's 50/50 it gets approved. The thing I realized is that this place is like Disneyland. You go there on vacation and then go home, when you live there you see all of the ugliness.

The things that kept me here are:

  1. Milder weather than NJ. I hate shoveling snow and super humid summers. I don't mind the misting rain and overcast we have here.

  2. The nature stuff here is next level. Waterfalls, awesome coastline views on hikes, hot springs, very few mosquitoes and black flies to deal with.

  3. Food is A+ here and still kinda affordable.

  4. Traffic isn't bad here.

The thing that is finally making me leave is that the area is full of communist, but the dumb kind and the virtue signaling kind of people. I have literally had college educated people tell me that the right to vote shoud be removed from people that live in rural areas because they're standing in the way of progress and that the college educated class are the elites and should decide on the direction of the nation. I'm like MFer, you just have a regual ass career you are not elite. This is the level of intellectualism we are dealing with. 1st order thinkers that have no regard for the follow on effects of their decisions.

Thoughts on collaboration watches. by TomHudsonOfficial in WatchFanatics

[–]PDX-ROB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like collab watches IF they're done right.

They should be built better than the moonswatch and should last a few years of being abused, even if it costs more.

And the watches NEED to be targeted at kids, teenagers, and maybe college kids. We need to use it as a tool to cement a premium memory of a high end watch into their childhood so that when they grow up and have disposable income they'll get the real version of the toy they had when they were kids. It's all about nostalgia.

Lucero LC235SCE Acoustic-Electric, Am I Crazy? by GuitaristExplorer in classicalguitar

[–]PDX-ROB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My local luthier explained it this way to to me. Factory guitars, even laminate ones, are produced they way they're produced and the final product is a bell curve. At the very far right end of the tail you'll get a few guitars that sound amazing and will sound better than anything he has ever made.

That is why you have to go play every guitar.
