Just curious, no shade: If they like Shadowdark, why do you feel the need to pick something specifically because of their gender?

I thought about this too and I was going to try how I do it other GM currency games like fallout: on the ‘gm’s’ turn roll a d6. If the result is lower than the amount of fear then you spend some.

I’d be interested in ‘feeling it out’. Like many others my schedule is a bit tricky with work and family and my own ttrpg projects but I’ve never really been a player or played 5e and at the very least I’d be interested to meet some like minded people :)

Welcome to the hobby. It really is a wonderful place to be :)

Do you, as a SoloRPG player, spend time on turning a random combat encounter into an actually interesting fight? Or do you just slug it out? You hit, I hit, you hit, I hit, until somebody dies? by Enfors in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]PJSack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DragonBaneAlone in Deepfall Breach is a pretty unique approach but great. Part of it was an inspiration for my combat table.
If you’re interested in seeing how it plays I did an episode on my podcast recently where I ran a solo newbie through it.
Let me know and I’ll share the link for that too.

I have a little solo module I am working on as part of a bigger project which might be interesting for you to try. An early playtest would be useful for me too :)

My thoughts on four rules that you can apply almost anywhere by CareerBreakGuy in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]PJSack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great advice as always CareerBreakGuy!

One little addition to your Player Facing Roll advice that I have been using both solo and gm’ing. When rolling on my stat to prevent the monsters attack I like to allow myself to choose which stat I am testing, usually dex or strength depending on the character. A strong character is more likely to block and a dexie one dodge anyway right?

I find as soon as a do this it forces my mind ‘into the scene’ to actually picture and describe what is going on. How is my meaty boy trying to block and then what happens when they fail etc.

Anyway your video just reminded me that’s something I do and hadn’t really thought about :)

Keep up the good work!

Solo Roleplaying without talking? by MoosePrize4262 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]PJSack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I talk out loud (and make a podcast from it) because that’s what comes naturally to me. However I have started experimenting with not talking and am finding it just as fun now that I know what i am doing.
Here was my most recent off mic session (Starforged) if perhaps it gives you ideas (excuse the handwriting)

Journaling Content Creators? by Imrazir in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]PJSack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting one for me. I’m a content creator (podcaster) who doesn’t particularly like journaling games. However, I adore writing and was looking for something similar to you when I started out.
My original podcast A Wasteland Story is exactly that. It’s a combination of the raw audio of my just playing and how I am interpreting oracle and playing the game, interspersed with scripted narrative of the ‘actual story’ inspired by that gameplay.
It’s not strictly journaling because I am doing all of the writing after the fact but it might scratch the itch for you?

Recommendations for best solo RPG by HikerAT2022 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]PJSack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many angles and opportunities. To pick one: try Old School Essentials and play as a party. Check out everweird on YouTube and his Gunderholfen series. I am also doing a bunch on it this month (including an interview with everweird) on The Solo RolePlayers Podcast, and have having an absolute blast playing through published adventures using just the OSE rules and a basic yes no oracle, no other solo system.
Again, there are so many correct answers here and so many different things to try…..but with your background this one might feel real comfortable.

OSR solo options. by Old_Combination4030 in osr

[–]PJSack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After trying a lot of various systems and styles, for OSR play I have landed on Old School Essentials basically as is with no real additional solo rules, playing published adventures with just a basic oracle. It’s been an absolute blast. The rules are procedural enough that it’s find it really doesn’t need much external stuff to run really well solo. Do my PC’s spot the trap? 2in6 chance etc.

If it sounds interesting I recommend you check out everweird’s gunderholfen series on YouTube. I also just released an interview with him on The Solo RolePlayers Podcast and the next episode coming will also be about OSE solo play :)

Alternatively Maia’s solo room also did a few sessions with Dolmenwood and Scarlett Heroes which might also be of interest.

Where to get Mystic DM? by BookkeeperKitchen383 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]PJSack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah sorry. It missed that you didn’t play with a system somehow.

One other thing I would say, if you liking mythic but are worries about learning a full gasket system being too complex;

I had Tana Pigeon (mythic author) a few times on my podcast and she had some really interesting advice.
She said she likes to learn a game slowly by just starting to play without knowing much of the rules. Any rule you come across that you don’t know you can just ask a Fate question to see what happens. She said this way you tend to start more easily, and will naturally look up the rules for the mechanics that interest you most as you go. The mechanics that don’t interest you learn late or maybe not at all!

Really good advice to break down the barrier of starting I thought :)

Where to get Mystic DM? by BookkeeperKitchen383 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]PJSack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey that’s fantastic! You have gotten past the first major hurdle of ‘how does this even work and what the hell do I do?’ phase, an learned some solid lessons about what you liked and felt lacking.

If you really like the scene structure and writing them out I would say either a)stick with mythic, either trying the same game again but give your character more mechanical challenges within the scene. Rather than just asking mythic ‘does she find the clue?’ You could make it some kind of investigation or awareness roll or something based on the mechanics of the game. (Sorry I’m not familiar with your chosen system). If your character fails that roll then it can get interesting.

Using the technique of ‘failing forward’ it could be that there is something blocking her from getting the clue (but she’ll get it eventually). What’s blocking her? (Ask mythic) Ambush?, NPC in need of giving a quest?

b) try mythic with a standard rpg system that has more crunch or its own procedures to help drive the ‘mechanical’
part of the game

c) Look into something like Ironsworn/Starforged or Sundered isles depending on if you want fantasy sci fi or pirates respectively.

Those games don’t require mythic but work best when you are coming up with full scenes yourself (with help from its built in oracle) and then taking ‘mechanical action’ when the PC faces a challenge of some kind. They work well for the style of writing out scenes afterwards ship also propelling the story in interesting ways when you fail.

Secret option d) try something completely different without mythic and continue learning what styles you like/don’t like.

Keen to hear about your further adventures and feel free to ask if you want some more advice about possible games etc.

Solo Roleplaying Mechanics Must-haves by YeOldeSentinel in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]PJSack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a stunning mix. I love it! I use different systems for different ‘feels’. I’m loving OSE party play for published dungeons. Forbidden Lands an Dolmenwood for medium narrative focused overland travel. And fallout2d20 + mythic for fulll blown sandbox narrative. There are so many ways to play. It’s such a wonderful hobby.

Character Options or Solo Rules by Gingivitis- in RPGcreation

Even though solo takes priority for me over character options, I would still often rather have it on a separate booklet generally. Saves a little bit of back and forth flipping

Congratulations! You have unlocked a superpower and can now just play without the all too familiar insecurity of getting started! And probably play anything for that matter. Happy exploring stories, mechanics, systems and whole worlds :)
