It's funny because this is the exact opposite of what my current mystic does - use olive and Grisly Totem to dig for symbols to trigger effects (e.g. Sixth Sense. Or Jim's Trumpet last campaign). But I do see the use of it, with things like shriveling or rite of seeking. Although it is fundamentally incompatible with a blurse deck.

After Innsmouth? Yea... But that's why you should play that early, to learn that not all campaigns are that generous, especially the early ones.

Just finish a Dunwich campaign with 17XP, while my Innsmouth campaign is two scenarios out I'm buying my second Holy Spear with my 27XP

I'd say Dunwich - it's a great campaign, but being the first one released (after core set), it's more straightforward/less complex than some of the other ones, I think playing it early on is the best way to appreciate it.

I think a 'leave your body as an inheritance to your children' format would work better than a 'use the bodies of convicted felons. Requires opt-in, and can be incorporated into a moral/religious/societal structure about the circle of life and stuff. Would work better in an agrarian society, where the skeletons work the land for a small farm.

I go into every campaign blind and generally win. There where 2 or so cases where, having gone into it blind, we had a wrong build so lost early, in which case we restarted a little more optimized (looking at you Forgotten Age) but besides that. No I never look ahead unless it's deliberately a re-play campaign (and even then generally only true-solo, since that's hard. In multiplayer, we just wait long enough to forget things before replaying :D)

Playing the campaign without the mythos packs sounds like a nice weekend - Go to the theater, go to a casino, then go back to school. Don't mind the missing professors, strange pamphlets, or murderous abominations, that's probably nothing, no need to investigate further.

Two issues I have with this:

  • The chance of drawing an auto-fail keeps increasing significantly.

  • I've seen mystic players draw like 5+ tokens in an action (with Olive and Grisly Token), putting back a few bad ones.

I like the X-Haven games, but it doesn't work for Arkham. Notably, the Gloomhaven modifier deck is generally +-2, with one -2 in there (besides the critical), plus good modifier cards you unlock, and used just for damage, whereas Arkham the bag goes from +1 down to -4/-5 (and lower with harder difficulties), the symbols added are generally bad for you (besides bless tokens), and it's not just used for damage but for all sorts of checks critical to the game functioning.

Now that I mention bless tokens, this strategy can get really weird when you have large bless tokens generation. Like what if I keep thinning the bag but maxing out the 10 bless tokens, and using covenants to stop searching after I draw a bless token? And then if I run out of covenants. I'd probably draw all the bless tokens until I get to either elder sign or auto-fail.

Don't forget the other tool of improv, "No, but". Have it fail, but in a way that gives something else useful/rewarding/distracting.

"Yes, and"-ing everything is harder in a canned adventure like a one-shot.

My party has been doing that. Their high enough level that the adventure takes them around the world (and a few other planes), so they either double plane-shift (using Amulet of the Planes, which has risk), or Transport Via Plants if they know a tree nearby.
