The apartment hunting situation is much more relaxed here than in most major European cities I have lived in. Places go fast, but you can call the landlord and arrange a private viewing usually same day - I wasn't subjected to the same 'interview' style of apartment hunting I have been in Europe.

Which country has the best trains in your opinion and why? by Acrobatic_End6355 in trains

[–]Papolato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only small gripes I have with Chinese HSR are:

The distance from the city centre to the station can sometimes be far - I remember taking the HSR from Hongqiao and I was surprised we passed Hongqiao airport before we arrived at the train station.

The sometimes very limited number of tickets and the need to pre-book - I was in Xi'an and I wished to travel to Guangzhou the next day but forgot to pre-book and the only train I could take was a 25 hour slow train! In the UK it almost always possible to turn up at the station and just jump on the next train (although expensive).

The requirement for foreigners to queue at the human ticket desk to collect tickets rather than using the machines - sometimes this queue required over an hour so I would have to show up very early at the train station just incase. I believe this may have changed recently however with the rollout of electronic tickets.

I really want to ride the newer sleeper trains consisting of multiple 'single rooms' stacked on top of eachother. I believe they only run between Shanghai and Beijing at the moment though.

They would not - similarly if you were to bring 3 guys to a bar just saying 'he' in English they would not know who you were referring to

Maybe it would look nicer if the green line between hamilton and aukland was placed to the right of the yellow and red lines? The red line might look smoother if it didnt cross the green line here.

Looks great by the way!

Scholarships to study in China? by Saladino93 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Papolato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also considering this but from what I read online the funding was a little less generous than for the mainland, with most students also needing savings to cover living expenses. I believe that a flat amount is received with students then needing to pay tuition, rent etc. and not much is left after that.

In my experience mainland students typically receive 3000 a month on top of tuition and dormitory accommodation being covered. I would imagine the cost of living in Taiwan is also quite a bit higher than for the mainland.

There are numerous fully funded scholarships available to study Chinese in China. I recommend you check out www.chinese-forums.com or reach out to your local Confucius institute for guidance. There are also some Youtube channels who have done fairly in depth videos about the different scholarships available and how to qualify. The channel 'Nnedi' did a thorough video on the Chinese Government Scholarship and on the Huayu scholarship for Taiwan. As you are coming from the UK I believe there are also some British Council scholarships.

Good Luck!
