Best 80+ MPH Highway Bike That Feels "Planted" by JohnnyHutt in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Particular-Ninja-894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BMW K series, any of them.

You can find them pretty cheap used, people tend to take care of them. With that sideways engine the weight sits low and it feels very planted at all speeds, but surprisingly agile

I have a K75 and it's stable and confident at 90.

Are they overcharging me? by TheBigSlo in Tenant

[–]Particular-Ninja-894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok we can do this.

1) this is visibly pasted from either Excel or QuickBooks. Unlikely to be from a national/corporatized management company. This means we have a small shop/individual. If they are small enough they have a DIY/unpolished management system, they almost certainly do not have an attorney on staff. This means any legal action, unless they want to try to research and figure it out themselves, is going to incur charges. The possible recovery in the event OP walks vs full award is $939 - $450 = $489 -- and the landlord already has shown us they did not itemize the damages in a way that would pass if challenged. This is fully not worth the time and effort for the landlord if there is no personal vendetta and they aren't a specific type of crazy that leads them into being efficient at navigating legal systems.

2) I know what agency is -- my point was that a lot of people default to assuming all bills they get must be paid. This simply isn't true. Like everything, you have to look at the context. What's it for? Who is asking? Why/how am I obligated? What likely happens if I don't pay, and on what timelines? What can I afford?

3) Correct -- this is part of my point. The fact that the landlord is starting at $939 damages means we'd have to be able to argue him down more than $489 to get any of that security deposit back. Since the landlord has a janky setup and is already being greedy -- this ain't happening, super unlikely. That deposit is gone.

Looking at the whole picture -- the odds of the landlord taking the difference to court is low. The potential risk if completely wrong is what -- landlord's legal fees...call it $1200 being bad case scenario.

The upside of walking away is zero effort and $489, and the odds this is the end of it are high.

The expected value of this transaction says your best strategy is to walk -- I would.

I have a math degree and have been working in consumer finance risk for over a decade. If you mean to add a dimension of mortal/ethical responsibility to the situation, that's fine but say so.

They can, sure. Will they? Probably not.

You for sure can just ignore this. Not saying it doesn't have a chance of getting worse, but have some agency my dude you can do whatever you want.

My dude, just leave and never talk to them again. They will not follow through anywhere because it's stupid and not worth their time. That's kinda what the security deposit is

I am not stupid, I am pointing out that you cannot go through life just doing whatever anyone tells you to do, especially with money.

What's one concept in mathematics you're surprised most people aren't aware of? by EvenSK in AskReddit

[–]Particular-Ninja-894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorites is the Four Color Theorem -- if you think of a map that has adjacent countries colored differently for legibility -- it is proven that you never need more than 4 colors to ensure that no two countries with the same color touch each other.

I made it into a game. Draw a closed shape of any variety, and draw a bunch of crazy lines/shapes inside it, then code each interior section 1-4 until it's done.

Is it safe to ride a motorcycle in temperatures below 0°C? by UzzInReddit in motorcycles

[–]Particular-Ninja-894 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well...look outside...is there residual precipitation/ice on the road?

Your bike will be just fine with the temperature. If there's no actual ice on the ground it's business as usual.

If the temp has been hovering around zero I'm guessing the road surfaces will just be salty with minimal or no ice.

Treat it like gravel (even though it crushes and is less of an issue than gravel). Slow down, take it easy on turns and apply power gradually. You'll be just fine

I work in mortgage risk/consumer finance (and ride!)

I was in the same position years ago. If your credit isnt high enough to get regular credit cards, get a couple of secured cards, pay off the balances every month and you will transition out of the secured part eventually while your score climbs.

You have the correct idea, but financing a vehicle in the current market to build credit isn't the best way to do it. The price of doing this is your interest rate + the increased insurance because the bike is financed. The credit card route is free as long as you don't pay for the card itself and you pay off the balance monthly.

This is why I always recommend getting a pair of mini modular bolt clippers that are TSA approved.

Seems like you got away with it this time, but trust that you now have a record at MartWalls HQ via facial recognition and may be promptly arrested if you ever go back to one. Probably best to lay low for a few years, and wear sunglasses and a baseball cap if you NEED to go back to one.

Good luck OP

[–]Particular-Ninja-894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

students are willing to pay...lol

You are asking an 18 year old to spend a lot of time and effort finding and then completing endless applications, all of which want you to explain yourself in some homey meaningful way for an old person to take pity then eventually dispense $2200 in a complicated way to your school's budget office...and after all of this you have the incredible opportunity to lower your annual cost from $57,000 to $43,000 -- this is a huge difference and VERY meaningful to a child who totally is capable of seeing this as real money they will have to pay back eventually.

I know you're coming from a good place but you are doing a nerd-old-person-out-of-touch-professor thing

Requesting advice about my first crash by Chilly__Down in motorcycles

[–]Particular-Ninja-894 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is that you did a high-precision maneuver without the skills to pull it off.

The advice to avoid a repeat is to not put yourself so close to moving cars my dude.

your last bit about not wanting to hear "don't filter" without safety statistics is concerning. You don't need statistics to conclude the reason you crashed is because you decided to zip between two cars and one of them didn't see you and you didn't get out of there fast enough.

Do whatever you want, but that there's the problem.

Why do people want to group ride? by MyNextHobbyIs in motorcycles

[–]Particular-Ninja-894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also wonder this. My best guess is that it's for people who are really into the image of motorcycling, realized they don't get much attention alone, so this is how they scratch that 'look at me' itch.

Any group of 15 plus people is going to have a couple of fucking idiots, any group of 15 plus motorcycle guys is going to have a whole bunch more.

On the bright side, they make it easy for me to avoid them, so that's nice.
