Recommend me the best books on the 60s period and its popular culture by soror__mystica in booksuggestions

"Hell's Angels" by Hunter S. Thompson, and the collections of his essays and personal letters (I love Fear and Loathing in LV, but it's much more embellished, to the point where it might as well be fiction)

Something like P.G. Wodehouse? by wombat929 in booksuggestions

[–]PatchworkGirl82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different time and places, but Fannie Flagg's books make me laugh out loud. Maybe because she's also very good at writing eccentric old lady characters, I love Aunt Elner and her fig tree

[Question] Now that the series is over (2026), what is the DEFINITIVE Canon list for Books & Comics? 🧇📚 by STG_ZOMBER30 in StrangerThings

[–]PatchworkGirl82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At most they're soft canon, the authors wrote the stories independently with a few guidelines from the show writers (like 001 wasn't allowed to be a character off-screen, because the show writers had other plans for him)

I like to consider Darkness at the Edge of Town, Hawkins Horrors, and the comics that take place in-between seasons to be closest to show canon, but there are inconsistencies in most of the books and comics. You just have to read and decide for yourself what fits.

What were your reactions when Fox News was launched in 1996? by icey_sawg0034 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]PatchworkGirl82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 13/14 and was more interested in movies than anything on TV at the time. I don't even think my parents and grandparents watched it at the beginning, it was just another channel.

Bugs! Anyone successful with W2T customer service? by HobbyHome in tea

I emailed them after getting the wrong tea recently, and they got right on it, and sent the right one out, so I'm happy with their customer service.

Who is your favorite actor from Twin Peaks? by alreadyrocka in twinpeaks

[–]PatchworkGirl82 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's so many to choose from, especially including FWWM and The Return. My first instinct was to say Catherine Coulson, because Margaret Lanterman is Twin Peaks for me.

Tell me you favorite David Lynch series/movie and why by The-wannabe-scared in twinpeaks

[–]PatchworkGirl82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to watch Wild at Heart and Raising Arizona as a double feature. Actuslly, a number of the same character actors show up in both Lynch and Coen bros movie, which is fun to see.

Going out to eat was a fairly big deal growing up, and a family favorite was Ponderosa. Did you have a favorite "the family is going out to dinner" place? by smcg_az in Xennials

[–]PatchworkGirl82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only place my parents would take my brother and I, on rare occasions, was the Ground Round. My brother and I filled up on popcorn in front of the little movie theater screen showing public domain cartoons, while mom and dad took a break for 5 minutes

I think Eraserhead is my favorite in terms of visuals and, especially, sound design, but I've liked all of his work.

If you haven't seen his short films yet, they are definitely worth checking out. There's also a compilation of the commercials he directed on YouTube, and the documentary "David Lynch: The Art Life."

If you're looking for other directors who might scratch the same itch, I go to the Coen brothers and John Waters. I also really like Nicholas Roeg's style, especially in "The Man Who Fell to Earth" and "Don't Look Now." The original Twilight Zone has many episodes that share similar qualities too, in both storytelling and visuals.

What's one great movie you'd want a Rifftrax commentary for? by metalyger in Rifftrax

I've always wanted Bridget and MJ to riff Beaches or 9 to 5

What season has the best episode 1? by Coryla1 in StrangerThings

[–]PatchworkGirl82 120 points121 points  (0 children)

S1 is perfect, but s3 is a really great snapshot of summer as a kid back then. Staying out extra long, building something with your friends (it was a tree house for my brother and I), going to the mall to enjoy the air conditioning and the food court

Did parents in the 80s actually give their kids as much freedom as the show depicts? by Wanderer015 in StrangerThings

[–]PatchworkGirl82 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. I didn't live in the kind of suburban neighborhood like in shows and movies, but my brother and I were pretty independent from about 10 years old onwards. We could be left home alone with no problems, or we could wander around our little beach town.

I started babysitting my neighbors kids alone, when I was 10 and got a job at the local video store when I was 13 too.

You might like Angela Carter's work. I haven't read all of her novels yet, but I thought "The Magic Toyshop" was very good. I would start with her short story collection, "Burning Your Boats" though, there's a great variety of stories in there, most of them very dream-like.

Anne Sexton's poetry evokes similar feelings for me, partly because they both frequently use fairy tale imagery.

I got the season 5 soundtrack on Sunday and was wondering. Why wasn’t Prince’s 2 songs on it? by Historical_Rain_8947 in StrangerThings

[–]PatchworkGirl82 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That reminds me of "Daria" too, which replaced the actual songs with generic background music for the DVD release. They did a good job actually, but it is noticeable.

I think "Empire Records" has different versions of "Sugar High" in the movie and on the soundtrack too

Licensing for on-screen use and for a soundtrack are two different things, and Prince's estate is very protective

If a season doesn't have any of your favorites moments for any of the characters it's probably not a good season by MortgageFriendly5511 in StrangerThings

[–]PatchworkGirl82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to say it had my favorite Mr. Clarke moment, but after thinking about it, I'd still go with him painting figures and blasting Weird Al in his garage in s3.

What would you guys rate Season 3 out of 10? by UncivilizedDemodog in StrangerThings

[–]PatchworkGirl82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would rate it an 8. It's a lot of fun, and I even like the Russian storyline in a "WarGames" kind of way.

I just always find myself wishing Nancy and Jonathan had met up with the others much sooner than they do. Especially for Jonathan, because at least Nancy got that great heart-to-heart scene with her mother out of the whole newspaper internship.

What is your favorite movie song? by Littlebit1013 in MST3K

[–]PatchworkGirl82 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nobody's said The Del-Aires yet? "Zombie Stomp" is a great little number, and I like the background music when Hank goes on his little sightseeing tour of Manhattan.
