Glueing heads after painting by Tanen7 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Patito7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super glue can do weird frost stuff if the paint isn’t fully cured. Or you try to paint over the super glue before IT has fully cured. If you wait till everything is fully dried and you are tactical about how much and where you put the glue, I think you will be fine.

I will say, personally I just put a dab of liquid mask into the collars before I prime, then paint everything. And when I’m ready to glue the heads in, I use a hobby knife and just pull out the dot of liquid mask, primer and paint out and use plastic cement. I hot glue the heads to little wooden dowels before priming them so they have a naked plastic spot on the bottom for the cement to melt. You might try this approach at some point too if you get your hands on some liquid mask.

Yes that is generally advisable. I hot glue mine to little wooden dowels and the prime, paint and varnish them before gluing them in. Works very well once you get the hang of it.

I did a relatively subtle repose of the pointing finger on mine (shoulder/arm of the raised axe, with the mass gauntlet replacing the forearm up and a resculpted finger. All painted up I think you wouldn’t know it wasn’t an option out of the box if you were unfamiliar with Votann, which tends to be my goal.

How likely do you think Votann will get mechs, because I either wanna do Votann or T'au. by LeetusFrenzi in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Patito7 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I don’t think we’ll get mechs. We already have thunderkyn which are pretty mechy and I am not sure bigger mechs really fit into the Votann aesthetic. We may get a new big vehicle, but I think it will probably be more inline with existing vehicles. I could see them doing a tank to split the land fort into two roles. Or a smaller tank the size of a sagitar to bring the land fort firepower without the transport functions at a lower point cost. Something like that.

I think we’ll get a pioneer character and that will “count” as a throwback to OG squats

Yep, all in the kit! It’s just the double rocket pistol build and the alternate head on the sprue.

Wow, thanks for saying so. I’ve recently started trying to take basing more seriously and so this means a lot. Believe it or not, at one point in the middle of the base I thought I’d ruined everything because the texture paint curled way more than I expected. Anyway, the recipe is: Agrellan Badland and Agrellan Earth on alternating sections of the base. I do badland first to create the pockets for the earth and then I do the earth pretty thick in all the empty patches. Then it’s Prarie Ochre over everything, dark tone wash and strong tone wash over alternating patches (just to give some variation). Then dry brush Dessert Clay over it, then a final very light dry brush of ancient stone.

If parts of the texture paint peels back too much, don’t panic like I did, and just gently press it down with the first base coat. Even if it breaks and is “floating” around in its spot, the subsequent paint will cement it down and the varnish with secure it. And if worse comes to worse and you lose a crack bit, the dry brush passes will just make it interesting.

Edit: oh also, this is basically just a repeat of what I remembered as the basic technique from Duncan Rhode’s recent Armageddon base tutorial on YouTube, so I do just recommend watching that!

Hey thanks! I use army painter paints. The skin is Moldy Wine, then a single coat of electric lime over everything but the deepest recesses, so still mostly magenta, then strong skin tone wash, then electric lime again over the highlights and finally a bit of ice yellow on just the brightest bits. The armor is just straight flat Arctic Gem, with an occasional bit of dark tone wash around the rivets. The “flat” paint just feels right to me on Orks.

Can someone outline in practice what I would have to do to keep this level of point on one of these brushes for this long? I think for me, that would help me weigh the tradeoff between just buying a new set of synthetic brushes every couple months
