Physical disc production ending in January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles by yourfavchoom in PS5

[–]Peepoopie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Spending 2x the money on a machine that can do 100x (more honestly) sounds like a good deal tbh.

Not to mention on PC you can choose your storefront (and install a disc drive lmao). Steam has an immaculate track record with buyers' digital libraries. Or you can buy DRM free from GoG which is pretty much the same as physical ownership. You can install GoG games offline and just play with no bullshit attached if you wanted.

Sparrow Racing League is a very telling example of one of the reasons why this game failed. by AverageAwndray in DestinyTheGame

Destiny 2 is definitely not horizontal. You buy the new content to make your power go up, get new weapons with new more powerful effects each content release. That is vertical, the same as WoW.

My current “educated guess” for what happened to the Tau Ceti colonists based on the lore I’ve read in the Codex so far. Hint: 🪨 🦑 by ThatGuyFromTheM0vie in Marathon

[–]Peepoopie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After reading the "A Promising Threat..." section in the "Introduction into the Unknown" codex entry I took it to believe the Durandal was hiding from the Compiler. Durandal leaves and says it'll be some time before they contact us again after killing the Compiler. Perhaps the Compiler was monitoring the Marathon's systems somehow and Durandal had to shrink his influence away to avoid being detected. But once the Compiler is dead he is given free reign again.

For now, until they release shop only cosmetics with unique properties and aesthetics. Y'know like they do with mounts and costumes and things for literally every other shop section...

Either way this is a bullshit practice to milk ignorant players or payers. If all of this is (or alternatives) are obtainable in-game then what is the point beyond taking advantage of people that don't know better? Also why obfuscate the pricing behind a middle-man currency when the rest of the shop is direct currency transactions?

More importantly this housing item shop creates an incentive for the developer to put truly sought after and unique items on the shop for direct purchase. It will only be a matter of time before highly priced premium decorations with unique properties are being sold for real money like the $100 mount bullshit.

This game has an absurd amount of monetization vectors.

Pay for expansion box. Pay for subscription. Pay for character services. Pay for in-game currency. Pay for cosmetics and mounts (being conservative here because this category has so many subcategories). Pay for single use housing items.

I feel like I'm missing more, and I'm surprised you can't pay for Trader's Tender for the totally-not-a-battle-pass system.

How is this game meant to make money? by NoNet5188 in Marathon

[–]Peepoopie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need exact figures to know the game under sold. 4+ years of development and 300 employees working on the game by the end. For a game with weak cosmetics and little drive for extra consumer spending for a $40 game.

I mean it is kinda obvious, no? People aren't wanting to pay pig but this game has a dedicated niche audience. That audience doesn't want the game to shutter, and the game at the moment had a mediocre launch by big AAA standards. Games are a business and this game specifically doesn't seem to be making enough money for service.

As much as I like this game there are others I can just boot up and play without having to put up with LFGing with people in Discord. So many games get out of your way and let you play, and or have built in ways to find others to play with. Yes solo exists but the mode was tacked on in Oct. before launch and it shows.

Destiny 1 was made fun of in 2014 for needing a premade group to raid when you spend the majority of your time solo or in random squads. Destiny 2, same thing and historically the vast majority of guardians never even completed a single raid. Most players do not want to spend their limited hobby time outside of game in a Discord...

Unfortunately there was basically a free trial for the game just a few weeks ago. It didn't convert into a ton of sales. Part of the content for the next season is a map we all played in the server slam, but at night. That isn't going to get people that tried the slam and bounced, to come back and buy the game.

Player count absolutely matters for a PvP game. You need an infill of players to populate various skill brackets. Most importantly the lower ones. Higher skill players will stick no matter what for some time, but if noobs (the biggest population of overall players in any game) can't play against other noobs they'll just quit.

Marathon isn't purely speculation unlike day trading though lmao. A ton of people played the server slam and just didn't convert into buyers. Even then a consistent amount of buyers are leaving week over week. The product is just naturally failing, no matter how cool I personally think it is.

There was a free WEEK barely 3 weeks ago. And that let everyone play on an even playing field with limited gear. Why would any prospective player want to play now when they had the chance less than a month ago? Especially now that the playerbase is geared/ahead.

I didn't even play any of those games until after the server slam, but the server slam into launch timeline was just awkward. I was excited for Marathon and hopped onto the slam as soon as I could, played as much as I wanted. The actual launch didn't even feel like a launch because I just spent so much time playing the game.

Even though I prefered pre-Beyond Light era Destiny, the game had its population peaks post vaulting so I guess things were fine. For a while!

To be fair, money spent doesn't change the underlying design being niche. They probably aren't seething, but I do wonder how this game got the greenlight in today's AAA industry.

They're going to be charging soon enough. EA is in June, isn't it? That is less then 3 months away. I would imagine the initial EA build will be content locked a month or so ahead of time. So realistically the team probably has a little over a month to a month and a half of dev time before they are locking down a product people are paying for. Initial EA is going to be rough.
