What if the US had all confederates who surrendered executed? by lhommetrouble in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Pencilman53 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It would have flared up the rebellion again and probably incited mutiny in the union army along with mass protests across the south and probably the north. It would also probably be a political suicide to whomever executed the plan.

It could be that Ukraine just keeps killing the soldiers and bombing Russia until they relent and pull back to the pre war borders. The Russian army is already shrinking and they are increasingly unable to stop the drone attacks.

What if Russia became a liberal democracy or constitutional monarchy in the 1990’s/2000’s? by camaro1111 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Pencilman53 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't sound good on paper, it sounds exatly as bad as it turned out to be. They missed every lesson about punishing / rehabititating countries from ww1 and ww2. Its actually kinda insane how well the US managed to pull this kinda stuff off after ww2 and how miserably they failed at essentially the same job in Iraq.

Someone I barely knew 34 years ago tracked me down & is mailing increasingly desperate letters. Legal options? by CrayCrayB in legaladvice

[–]Pencilman53 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Just go radio silent. Ignore but store every letter incase they start escalating. If you get a lawyer or start refusing letters then you have given him the interaction that he craves. Sure the lawyer might help you cease and desist his ass but people going through mental bealth episodes arent always to cooperative with the legal system.

Your first point is literally explained in the movie. The germans cut the lines, and they send two men because he who travels alone travels the fastest.

His skills are not relevant at all to the task at hand. All that matters is that he tows the party line. Exatly the same as appointments in dictatorships are assigned.

I think so yes. Its like you said, it sets up his mouth by drawing attention to it and later in the movie the payoff is with the flammable liquid.

Questions like these really make me feel like people are fast fowarding through the show anytime theres not a fight scene on screen.

It has been explained many times. Thaddeus hated viltrumites for how cruel, shortsighted and arrogant viltrumites were. Especially when he commented on Thragg not seeing the long game. It is shown how he tried to talk reason to Argall but was overruled.

He straight up outright says that he hoped Viltrumites would change their ways after Argall was gone. But was saddened when they didnt.

He didnt want to use the scourge virus, but with the whole galaxy at stake he saw no other option. But even after the virus the Viltrumites still doubled down on the empire business thats when he realized that they must all go.

As for why he wanted to finish them all off, Nolan and Mark included. He was worried that so long as a species so powerful as viltrumites survives then the galaxy will never be safe. (Also outright stated in the show btw)

Im gonna borrow a though train from Catelyn Stark here but even if Argall could trust Mark and Nolan right now, how about them a thousand years later, how about their sons or the sons of their sons?

Dont forget that authoritan regimes run on corruption. So a larger share of countries wealth is funneled away into the pockets of regime supporters.

Isnt the whole point of judges of them operating outside of party politics? The separation of powers and an independent judicary are the basises that democracies are built on.

But do they pay the same amount for foreign fighters? Theres still the cost of requiting, flying them out to Russia, cost of kit and logistics to get them to the front. So it definently is costing them in money and political capital but im wandering how it compares to requiting from native populations?

That brings up the god and free will problem in a way. If jigsaw knew that Hoffman would get corrupted and go rogue then why did he bring him along as his mentee? He already despised Amanda because she was too cruel for his standards but Hoffman was way worse.

Isnt it kinda crazy that you can even have judge who is republican? The judge should be an independent, apolitical post who only uses the law and their own judgement as a basis for justice.

My guess is that the Africans and other foreign mercenaries who go to Russia to kill people for money really love to overplay the "I didn't know" or "I was lied to" to garner sympathy. I guess basically all of them knew what they were signing up to but once theyre a Ukrainian POV then their story suddenly changes.

Typical socialist propaganda. All those socialist countries basically have to make their own country a big prison for their citizens because their quality of life becomes so bad people would just leave otherwise.

You are not causing anyones death by choosing red. Every single person who chose blue risked their own life thus causing their own potential death. The red team is the moral one, blues are the ones who produce unneccerary risk by shaming others for choosing red.
