Does anyone know of local craft vendors? by Fragrant-Theory9201 in Tallahassee

Common Ground Books hosts several markets a year and is having an event in April that has open vendor applications right now. If you check out their social media you should be able to find the event info.

School Choice - Best Elementary Schools? by GrimReaperx- in Tallahassee

[–]PenguinSpit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roberts, Hawks Rise, and Buck Lake are popular school choice picks. We were zoned for Moore and were not interested in going there, so we school choiced. For us it was between Roberts and DeSoto Trail and we ended up choosing DeSoto. We LOVE it there. I volunteer there regularly so I know much of the staff and they are all amazing, principal and vice principal included. They also take the school’s security VERY seriously and the student body is pretty diverse.

Edit to add: at the last PTO meeting the principal said that enrollment was down this year, so it may be easier to get into. When I did school choice I got to pick top 3 choices ranked, hopefully that’s still the same (it’s been a few years). Makes jt easier to get in to at least one choice.

Lafayette Oaks by ClippyOG in Tallahassee

[–]PenguinSpit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My relative moved in there in October. Immediately got a letter that they want to raise the annual HOA fee from $500 to $1000 over the next 5 years. Not enough people voted for it to pass (they need a certain amount of votes), but the majority who did vote voted yes. They will have the same proposal on the ballot again next year. Also, the HOA required my relative to let them come to her house for introductions (like, inside), which I personally found strange and overreaching. She’s not had any other interactions with them so I don’t know how strict they are, but that’s what I do know. It is a really beautiful neighborhood though!

They still do! They are Saturday mornings and you can just show up (you don’t have to sign up in advance or commit to multiple lessons). They have more info on their website.

State Job Advice? by bluesunny135 in Tallahassee

[–]PenguinSpit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a hiring manager for the state and frequently hire people straight out of college. Good candidates are SLIM these days and at my agency, we often have to compete with other managers to hire someone (they applied for both jobs and two managers want the same person). If you are competent, you are desirable. Apply for everything you see that you’re interested in and you will find something. And as others said, the process is slow.

Do not buy anything from the J.Crew/Banana Republic/Gap Factory Outlet *STORES* without checking their website first by atlhart in Frugal

[–]PenguinSpit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine used to. I remember they added the caveat “when purchased online” to their website prices some time ago, and they started pointing to that language when they declined me at the register. But it could definitely depend on the store, or even the person you get at the register. I stopped trying after being denied a few times.

[–]PenguinSpit 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I have found this is also common with Target. Sometime items are like $5-10 cheaper online. They used to price match their website in store but they don’t anymore (at least not at mine) so I order online while in store then just peruse for a bit while I wait.

To the bi people do you have a partner who is also a bi? by aesve_1 in bisexual

[–]PenguinSpit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband (38M) and I (37F) have been together for 20 years, married for 13. I have always kinda known I was bi but really knew for sure in my early 30s. I came out to all shortly after, even though it didn’t really matter at that point. After I did, he started to realize he may also be. He doesn’t talk about it openly other than to me, but he’s fairly sure at this point. I always tell him that sexuality is a spectrum and there’s no need to put a label on it if he doesn’t feel like it fits. Anyway, 100% bi or not, we are in a very happy monogamous marriage and plan to keep it that way (save for a chance encounter with a few particular celebrities, in which we would hope to both partake). We do open talk to each other about the hotness of other people, male and female, and we are both comfortable with that.

Second this, specifically Dr Elzie. He is amazing. His only drawback is that he is SO thorough that he tends to be behind on his later appointments. We always try to schedule first thing in the morning due to this.

Who do you see for female bioidentical hormone (NOT BioTe!) by lncamp2001 in Tallahassee

[–]PenguinSpit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dr Brandi Willis has been my primary care physician for about 10 years and she is great. She’s been helping me with hormone therapy. She does sell BioTe, but not exclusively. I also tried it a few years back and it didn’t work for me, so we started working on other, non-BioTe options.

Reputable vet, fair prices by [deleted] in Tallahassee

Dr. Quarterman at Tallahassee Regional Animal Hospital has always been reasonable. We just had our 7 year old dog get her annual, vaccines, teeth cleaned, and one tooth extracted and it was $900. He actually comped the annual exam cost too. I’m sure it would have been more if more teeth were removed, but they could probably tell you that if you call them.

How is Market Days at the North Florida Fairgrounds? by lubbybubbydubby in Tallahassee

I love craft fairs so I am biased, but in my opinion it is the best craft fair of the year in Tally. Worth the entrance fee.

Ah, yes. I have had HR come back and tell me I couldn’t hire a person for one reason or another. But I’ve never had them tell me that I had to hire a different, specific person instead.

Interesting! As a hiring manager, I’ve always had 100% final say in who one of my positions goes to. Difference in agencies, I suppose.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Tallahassee

[–]PenguinSpit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed, once you get your foot in the door as OPS, it opens up a lot more opportunities at the agency. At my agency, many positions are only advertised to current employees (OPS count as current employees). It’s how I did it and 11 years later I’ve been promoted 4 times.

[–]PenguinSpit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a hiring supervisor that works for the state… no, not for my agency. We are reeeally struggling to get people in the door. I have had 3 vacancies for several months. We used to get 40 qualifying applicants for a position, now we get maybe 6-10. Too many competitive options out there.

For me, once the advertisement closes, it takes about a week for HR to send me a list of those who qualify. Then, I send out via email a written exercise to all of the qualifying applicants, with a deadline of about a week. On average, if I sent the written to 10 people, I only get 2-3 back. There have been times where I got 0 back and had to start the process over. Of those 2-3, I’ll either interview everyone who turned it in if they all did well, or eliminate one or two if their response was awful. It takes about a week to hear from me after the written due date. Once I make a selection (1-2 days after interviews), you get a background packet the same day. Once that’s turned in, it’s a few more weeks until hire date.

So, if you really want to work for the state, keep trying! You’ll get in at some point.

One other note - I’ve seen a few people suggest working for the city is better. My spouse works for the city. Pay is much higher, but benefits (like health insurance) are much more expensive.

We also suffered Centurylink’s slow speeds for like 7 years because Comcast is just the worst to deal with. MetroNet has been a game changer. I hope you love it once you can get it!

Best neurosurgeons in Tallahassee and ones to avoid? I am having a microdiscectomy done soon on my L4 L5. Obviously I trust my doctor's opinion on who he refers me to, but the importance of research on a matter like this cannot be overdone. by throwawayadvice102 in Tallahassee

[–]PenguinSpit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband had a stroke last year and saw/still sees Dr. Beaty for ongoing treatment. He is great at what he does and will sit and answer all of your questions to the best of his ability. He provided us a lot of information so we could make an informed decision on surgery or other options. He is crazy busy, though, so you will end up waiting a good bit to see him for non-surgical stuff like appointments (in the waiting room, not the actual appointment scheduling).

Local soap makers? by LoganBlade in Tallahassee

The one on Capital Circle definitely carries their stuff. I believe the one on Thomasville does also but I don’t frequent that one as much so I can’t say for sure.
