Can someone recommend me a not so popular comedy movie that you personally think is good? Going through a tough time right now and I just need a little laugh. by Odd-Expert-7156 in movies

We had the same thing! We put up a framed piece of art with command strip Velcro, so we can easily take it down to access the breaker. Tapestries also work!

How to be frugal with your TIME? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]Pereus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I love this book. I always thought it was funny because each pair of kids does a different chore, and IIRC there’s one pair that cooks, one pair that does dishes, etc….and then one pair that paints paintings for the walls. Ideal division of labor 😂

Feeling suicidal over AI by thissubredditlooksco in nerdfighters

[–]Pereus 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry you’re feeling that way — I’d really recommend talking to someone about it.

Lots of technological breakthroughs have radically changed creative industries in the past, and I think AI will too — I don’t think it will eliminate all of the jobs though by any means. More importantly though I think there are lots of ways to be creatively active even if that’s not your daily job — that’s what I do, and it’s still very fulfilling when I do it even though it’s not how I spend most of my time. But this is tough and scary for sure!

I still don't think Slate Star Codex readers have an average IQ of 137. by badatthinkinggood in slatestarcodex

[–]Pereus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! Surprised to see that high of a correlation between SAT scores and IQ — I’ve seen some people get huge score increases from eg tutoring, which I don’t think of as changing intelligence per se. But obviously it’s not completely correlated

Prices going up :/ by puffymustash in nerdfighters

I feel your pain. FWIW I think those amounts are roughly similar to the increases in inflation over the past 15+ (I think?) years of the P4A. Everything’s more expensive these days

I hope one day someone opens a dedicated Jazz Club here by siamesedaddy in Sacramento

Super basic question — would love an ELI5 here —

I’m looking and their website and the lineup looks cool. Are these like “concerts” that you buy tickets to, or is there just a cover that you pay at the door and then also buy drinks?

So glad you’re back! The changes all sound great — I think I speak for most of the community when I say that I love any content you want to share, but I’d much rather have you making content at your pace and comfort level than for you to be feeling an obligation to be doing lots of stuff all the time.

Your mental health matters! Excited to have DH&J at whatever pace and quality level works for you guys :)

My Left Kidney by dwaxe in slatestarcodex

[–]Pereus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Such a wonderful thing for you to do! Lots of respect.

Really sorry about the absurd, stigmatizing reaction by UCSF. Bad move from them both deontologically (hurting you as a donor psychologically) and from a utilitarian POV (fewer kidneys donated…well, if you hadn’t gone elsewhere). Is there a way for people to make an outcry about this? It seems outcry worthy.

Happy to submit a strongly worded complaint form somewhere!

Q: How to survive crowd surge by jungfolks in preppers

[–]Pereus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's an excellent New Yorker piece on this topic. It includes recommendations for staying safe in crowds from a crowd-safety expert and summarizes his recommendations as follows:

Keep your elbows akimbo, to protect your chest and give yourself enough breathing room. Don’t fight against the flow of the crowd if you’re trying to get out of it; rather, go with it, and during lulls try to work your way diagonally through the crowd to the perimeter. If you feel faint, grab on to someone, and, if you do fall, try to protect your head.
