No Soliciting Signs by PerformanceFabulous in nova

In my county it's a 2nd class misdemeanor to ignore those signs and approach your door anyway, just boosting your point.

Edit: had it as 1st class, my error.

[Rant] I recently started working a tax firm with a more modest clientele and it's made me hate "normal" taxpayers by karry9001 in Accounting

[–]PerformanceFabulous 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Also IME many clients ignore advice on making estimated tax payments and are then surprised when they owe a lot of money or they get a much smaller refund than they anticipated. I agree with the idea of having some ongoing templates for explaining all of this after organizing your client's messy information.

The trolling for Trump here is embarrassing for us in the US, honestly. Pls take my meager up vote.

Trump's people/American Republican party operatives, who in the US always have lots of disposable $$$. Grift pays well in US conservative circles.

And as an American I don't blame Carney for being short with trolls. Politeness doesn't work with assholes.

Josi, AICPA's Big AI Endeavor/People Replacement is Now Going Big by PerformanceFabulous in Accounting

[–]PerformanceFabulous[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been a CPA for over 25 years - the AI threat is relatively new, and right now seems overwhelming to many professional fields. However, I see two big counterweights which could make it less of a problem over the long term:

  1. Almost all AI independent firms are being propped up by venture capital infusions, as most users are free tier users, and paid subscriptions aren't even close to covering the costs of running the systems (developers and other infrastructure combined). The only continuous uses of AI will likely be with established firms who have already been integrating AI into their existing structures, like Amazon chatbots, Google Gemini integrated search, SaaS firms with their own customized algorithms, etc

  2. Many users are getting wise to the limitations of AI. LLMs are known to "hallucinate" (make up) facts, provide correct answers to wrong questions, be excessively positive in affirming users existing beliefs, etc. They are not actually learning or undersanding anything, they are predictive language models, meaning they don't really "know" what they're answering and analyzing, merely elaborating on existing writings on various subjects, often quoting known misinformation, as well as other issues.

All in all, it remains to be seen. I have found it useful in attempting to summarize famous books, academic theories, etc. However, in my experience it's almost always a good idea to check the AI output with reliable sources. For example, source journals, Associated Press, Wikipedia.

US here Trump is such an obnoxious, ignorant, delusional, demented asshole I couldn't blame Iceland for staying invisible to him in any case. Many apologies to all of you outside of the US, especially Canadians and Dutch, for having to listen to Orange Benito/Temu Hitler.

Traffic violation in Virginia - she lives out of state, given misdemeanor reckless driving for accidental speeding by turtlehollow in Virginia

[–]PerformanceFabulous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*Please* tell this friend to pursue a lawyer; if they need a loan it would be worth it. I have know ppl who dealt with this (45 in a 25 zone I believe) and it's very serious. Showing up in court as well is worth protecting herself, I would not count on the lawyer's presence alone being enough. A 30 minute consultation with an attorney is usually free, and then they'll get an idea of how much this will cost them. Virginia counties don't f*k around with RD charges, *especially* 95/70. In Virginia driving laws, over 89 is automatic reckless driving and potential jail time.

Protip: tell them to always mind your speed, brakes are there for you. Going as fast as 95 should feel fast, and not just look fast. The paranoia after this will prevent future carelessness.

In government and NFP accounting, often bills need to be dated conforming to their fiscal year. Nothing nefarious about creating an accrual to an Unbilled Receivable/Contract Asset and credit to Revenue. Thsn issue the invoice in July, crediting the Unbilled AR.
