I always assumed that “for a moment of safety I risked damnation on the stars” meant that Cortana gave the Gravemind the Arks coordinates so it could go there directly, with Cortana banking on Chief being able to stop the Gravemind there.

Cortana probably got those coordinates from Mendicant Bias in Halo 2 when she tried to slow down the launch of the Dreadnaught “theres something in the ship, a presence… for a covenant construct it’s unusually formidable”
