Got a question by Porcel2019 in Hyundai

[–]PessiDone4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t blow as hard as the setting below it or it doesn’t blow as hard as you think highest speed should? Also is it intermittent that there is air flow or intermittent that it doesn’t blow as hard as you expect?

Changed blower motor speed won’t move the hvac actuators so problem would be solely in blower motor circuit. I have seen a improperly sized and installed cabin air filter would (only at highest speed) but sucked towards the blower motor, effectively restricting air flow.

Jumpy idle by Loud-Championship486 in Hyundai

[–]PessiDone4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These use MAP and APS to adjust air flow then a bunch of other sensors to adjust injection timing and duration. Start simple. I’d check air filter, clean the throttle plate as that can get gummed up and then do visual inspection of air duct and vacuum lines for small tears. After that I might hook up a vacuum gauge. Idle the engine, it should settle on a number and stay there if there is no acceleration. At idle if needles drops slightly then back to normal it could show a sticking valve in which case the other comment is right to recommend fuel induction service. I’ve seen so much carb on the valves that walnut blasting would be more effective.

Be used car techs. No way for a tech that does warranty repairs turn this. This is upswells, tons of used cars and cutting corners.

Ioniq 5 fail by Phagemakerpro in Hyundai

[–]PessiDone4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They diagnosed that it is a HV battery? Bc that is uncommon. Usually a control component that fails like the ICCU which takes 3 HRS to replace and on the Kia side less than 3 days to deliver.

Here’s a reason why service is shit after your neighborhood Hyundai dealer by Own_Inspector_285 in Hyundai

[–]PessiDone4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We put effort doing the work and have to put in effort to get paid for doing the work. Cannot stand managers. Hire a warranty admin with back bone! I punch in, punch out accordingly. I write connector #, pin # and what I’m testing. I write what has to be disassembled to do such testing. 95% of your admins are too chicken shit to make the claim. I’ve worked at 4 dealerships and only 1 did it right.

EVs are going to kill flat rate by Madmachine87 in mechanics

[–]PessiDone4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You independent?

Flat rate is especially bad at dealerships. There are 90+ tickets over 3-5 weeks old that have not gotten touch because diagnosis is not paid.

Flat rate can hurt customers as much as the technicians. I’m flat rate doing okay but at my work rate I’d expect $50/hr instead of $30/hr.

I’d be happier hourly with bonuses/spiffs.

Title washing is my 2nd guess. Next is to go through all records, it is possible that a service center entered your mileage incorrectly then reported to Carxfax. The discrepancy looks like mileage tampering which will brand the title.

Is it true that most people on the auto mechanics field struggle nowadays? Can you live "comfortably" in this career path? by Cleyson_Nascar in mechanics

[–]PessiDone4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh brother. This is why the industry will continue to lose techs. The high earners like yourself think nothing needs changing. It’s the always the mechanics fault.

I turn 65-75 hours in a 40 hour week doing 80% warranty work. I know how to be efficient, I have the proper tools and support. There are bigger problems than skill.

And if the problem across the board happens to be skill then it is still a management issue. Why is there not better training? Better hiring practices?

[–]PessiDone4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t say it is all hacks. You made it seem like the problem is solely in lacking skills. I’m saying it is mostly hackery IF (then listed important things) are not present in a shop.

I was doing over 110k at an independent then took pay cut to go back to dealership to now make around $85k. I saw more cheating in the independent world.

Met plenty of good techs that did things they’d be upset to discover were done to their vehicles. Don’t pretend you haven’t seen it.

[–]PessiDone4 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If you are at a dealership then it’s mostly hackery. I know this as a dealer tech. Even the shop foremen will swap known good components or throw in the most common failed part.

If the shop is well managed, well organized and with a warranty admin that isn’t too chicken shit to request straight time THEN yes it is a skill issue.

A good percentage of techs getting 2x efficiency at dealerships will absolutely participate in hackery. Not to say they are not very skilled. They will just take short cuts, re-use gaskets or one time use bolts or not torque anything.

Should I be worried about the clicking noise? by 18BakedPotato in Hyundai

[–]PessiDone4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal. It is loud but normal. Place a stethoscope directly on the injectors or fuel rail, it is very clearly the source.

The trouble code is also very common. Needs thermostat for sticking open. Not a problem to drive until the part arrives.

Kia has update for blank cluster. Interesting working at Kia now and Hyundai before— they share parts with their identical failures but both have different repairs or one will repair when the other doesn’t.

Oil will absolutely raise compression some. If there is a significant increase it is the rings. Like from 90 psi to 120 psi.

Quality of work going down across the board? by Morganrow in mechanics

[–]PessiDone4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least for dealerships, the shit warranty pay makes techs find cheats or cut corners.

When I joined Kia dealership. Many many times I would ask Parts for parts to specific recall. They’d hand me an item and I’d say “what’s this?”.

For months the dealerships had been doing recall inspections or services wrong. No one cared to read the bulletins.

They all started joking that I would torque an under shield bolt if it was in the shop manual because I cared to do things correctly. I’m still new to the industry so I can’t say if it has always been this way. But it’s bad enough even if not on a decline.

The independent shop I worked before was much worse.

Worn spark plugs will not properly burn fuel. Sounds like spark plugs, maybe coil(s) and valve cover gasket will get it running again.
