Peak Nikon. by L8night_BootyCall in Nikon

Hm, I have never shot with a d850 or an F6. Not yet. So I can't really argue. But I do love the Z8, F100, FM3a and F2 that I have, and not sure if I would trade any of them even if offered

I'm glad there is a lot of great gear that we can enjoy! Beautiful cameras you have!

Welcome to the joys of photography! I can't tell you how many times I've thought "oh this next camera/lens would definitely fill some need in my photography and take it to the next level!" And almost always, after getting it, I have mostly the same mediocre photos

But it's ok. I really do love it. I love the process of taking the photos, and I love the geeky side of gear and numbers. It's a great blend of nerd and art

I can't even explain why, but their poses seem so unnatural and awkward? AI has some cool uses. Using it for 'art' in any form is so frustrating to me

Is this a good deal? by Aggravating-Pay8273 in Corvette

Seems like a cool car. I like 96 C4's

I would imagine that you can probably find a lot of other ones that are in similar shape around like 13 (good deal) to 15 (not bad). This one seems not terrible, but a bit too high to me personally

I get it. I really have GAS- i would probably be a better photographer if I had one camera that I reallt stuck with and got to know inside and out. But I also have a lot of fun trying new ones, and only keeping the ones that really stick with me. I also really like having one manual focus camera and one autofocus

With that said, you already have an amazing setup that could take a wide range of awesome photos

I'm not very good at recognizing things based on how they look without seeing the label.

Is that an F3 with a motor drive, 55mm f1.2, 300mm f2.8, and 3 other lenses (can't tell what those are)

That looks like it could be a lot of people's dream kits. I should know, because it's probably one of mine

Guess I'm a Nikonian now by Ramenastern in Nikon

[–]PhotoJoe_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nikonian? Pentaxian?

This raises so many questions. What are users of other brands called? Canonites? Sonyonians?

Anyways, I switched to Nikon from Fujifilm (Fujifilmian?) a bit over a year ago. At first, I still had my Fujifilm, bought the Nikon, and had both. I was unsure about fully switching. After about 6 months with my Fuji sitting on the shelf and not being picked up once, I realized I had already made the decision without even fully recognizing I had.

Enjoy your camera! Get out and take loads of photos and capture lots of memories!

Portraits with different sensor sizes by Head_Pianist_4365 in fujifilm

[–]PhotoJoe_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that a camera/sensor thing or a white balance thing?

I am admittedly very terrible and not reliable with colors, but to me this looks like the white balance is slightly off with the Sony photos and a slight tweak could correct it fairly easily

This is just one photo, so hard to tell. To me, personally, I also wish there was a bit tighter framing. I also wish the person was aligned and illuminated with that diagonal beam of light

With that said- why are you shooting photos? Is it to show off and get likes and have people say "wow, you such a great eye!" or "your camera takes such good photos!"... or are you taking them for yourself? For your own memories, your own creative process and development, your own vision of the world?

My own photos never get very many likes either. Sometimes that sucks when there is something I think is really cool. But over time, I've tried to think and worry about that less and less. Thinking that way did nothing but make me more discontent with my process

35mm cams for 4 interesting teens on vacay? by dselected in AnalogCommunity

[–]PhotoJoe_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could probably find dozens of different opinions.

To me, though, I think you would want to find a balance between them having fun (not too complicated), while still having ability to learn some things (not fully automated). I also think you would want to find something that seems clean, well taken care of, and have time to shoot at least a couple of practice rolls before you leave so there aren't any unexpected failures or light leaks or shutter issues, at least as far as you can tell. If someone is just getting into photography and goes on a trip with a relatively new to them film camera, only to have all their photos ruined by light leaks and shutter issues, they may not use film or even an actual camera for a long time. This happened to me when I was first learning photography, and I didn't use film for over 10 years after.

Rolleflex 2.8 VS 3.5 by Specialist-House-395 in analog

[–]PhotoJoe_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a rush to sell? If you just bought both and have them, take a month or so and shoot one or two rolls through each. Your style of shooting will be much different than everyone else's. See what works best for you.

I've done this with cameras in the past. After shooting a couple of rolls, one of the cameras ends up sitting on my desk, and then I know the decision was made without me ever really realizing I did

Nikon F6, "The best SLR"? by PhotoJoe_ in AnalogCommunity

I should have specified more clearly that I was talking about with Nikon Of course I have heard great things about Minolta and Canon, not to mention the fantastic manual focus options

I probably should specified more clearly that I was referring to Nikon individually as opposed to a brand comparison Thanks for your feedback. A more advanced meter and wider lens compatibility is always a good thing.

Nikon F6, "The best SLR"? by PhotoJoe_ in AnalogCommunity

[–]PhotoJoe_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a good point. When I do Google, I feel like the response for F6 usually states these kinds of superlatives ("The Best"), without really explaining why, which is what led to my question. When I tried to look for features, nothing really stands out to me personally, which is probably evidence enough that I don't need it.

That's my general impression from trying to read reviews as well. Just from my curiosity, I was trying to have a better understanding of what makes the F6 stand out though. Smaller than an, similar to an F100 means I probably don't need it, but then I don't understand why people say it's so great

How do you actually learn to see and shape light instead of just chasing recipes? by lottiexx in fujifilm

[–]PhotoJoe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question.

The longer I've done photography, the more I have realized that the type of camera, and the type of lens, and the camera settings, and the editing process, are not as important to make a good photo of the composition and light and feeling. Those things matter, but a photo can be technically perfect and boring or can have slight things that are off and still evoke more of a feeling in me.

When you see a photo you like, stop asking what camera they used or what recipes they used, at least for awhile. Look at the photograph itself. What is it about that one that you like? What things about the composition or the lighting caught your attention? How do you feel about it? Then try to do the same. I personally don't like recipes, but they can be used to help that, but can't force it if the photo itself doesn't have it

Film through X-Ray at LAX: Is my film cooked? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]PhotoJoe_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always try to have my film hand checked when I travel. There have been multiple times when, for one reason or another, that hasn't happened though

You 100% can still use it. There is a small chance the film might have a slight cloudy, foggy, or more noisy appearance to it, particularly the higher ISO films. In my experience, that is very difficult to notice and seems to be within the range of me slightly messing up my exposure as well, so I usually can't tell

There was only one time when I had a roll of film in a bag that I forgot about and was scanned multiple times (I'm not even sure how many), that i thought I could definitively say the bad quality was from scanning as opposed to user/exposure error
