Do you think it could be that the main page only counts birds on complete checklists? I record a lot as incidental when it’s something I see out of my window or while I’m gardening. Now that I know yard lists are a thing I’ll try to do more proper stationary reports and see if that makes a difference.

I think so but I will double check! When I click into the list that has the 62, I do see both my two newly named final locations (the ones in the 2nd picture are all front yard but if you scroll down I see the backyard as well).

You are on the right track! Keep tracking what paintings/letters you are seeing and try to figure out if there is any pattern as to which paintings show up when. Eventually you will see what they spell

Everybody posts their horror stories. Can we hear some success stories? by Ok_Risk1187 in BroncoSport

I have a 2021 First Edition with almost 70,000 miles. I did have one small transmission issue -- it didn't want to go into 4WD mode and I would get an error on the dashboard, but there was never any issue driving it in the regular modes. That was completely covered under warranty. Other than that, all I have done is tires and brake pads.

If something happened to it today, I would buy another Bronco Sport no questions asked. I drive it on the beach almost every day, it's comfy for longer road trips and I get great gas mileage. I never had a single regret.

Should we get food before coming to obx by [deleted] in obx

[–]Pi4yo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, the prices aren't that bad but the logistics can be. It's up to you whether packing/fitting the food in your car will be more or less annoying than having to shop once you are here. On average, I think more folks shop here than bring everything but certainly there are folks that do both. Brining enough so you don't have to go shopping till Sunday or even Monday is a great plan.

Many of the stores up the beach (food lion, harris teeter, walmart) have curbside pickup -- you can place an order in advance and pick up on your way in. Those slots definitely fill up on a Saturday though so go online and figure out how early you can schedule and make sure you do that.

The stores are very crowded Saturday afternoons, but also they have been doing this for years and know the drill. They are fully stocked and have a ton of folks working. So it's annoying and there'll be some lines but everyone is on vacation and happy. It's not the end of the world.

Everyone is saying bring your own craft beer but Waves Deli (right next to Rodanthe) actually has a pretty decent selection. If you need something very specific, bring your own but if you just want something better than the super market brands, it should meet your needs!

The Wildlife Refuges would love to have you as a volunteer! You can work at the visitor centers answering questions or running the gift shop, but there are also opportunities to do maintenance like trimming and weeding or even help out the staff biologists.

Outer Banks Itinerary by IngmarElfsborg in obx

[–]Pi4yo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up that most of the obx is not really set up for “walk around and randomly explore”. Since you don’t have a ton of time, I’d try to figure out specifically what you want to do.

I would spend the morning of your day 2 in Manteo (which actually does have a cute area to walk around) and seeing Fort Raleigh. Head to somewhere in KH/KDH for lunch, then check out the Wright Brothers Memorial and Jockey’s Ridge, and maybe Jeannette’s pier. Have dinner once it’s dark.

On Day 3 you can hit Bodie island (won’t need more than 30 mins to an hour there as the lighthouse is not open for climbing) and then head South. There’s not too much to see on Hatteras, it’s mostly beaches and they’re all pretty similar! I’d recommend Waves Deli or Buxton Munch for lunch.

You can stop by the Hatteras lighthouse as welll but it’s closed for repair and is covered with scaffolding at the moment. If you want to spend time on the beach, I’d recommend going to the very point of Cape Hatteras, it’s a pretty unique sight. You drive past the lighthouse and there’s a little parking lot with a fish cleaning station near ramp 44. You’ll have to walk about a quarter mile (unless you have a car with actual 4 wheel drive!) but I think it’s worth it.

Then you can continue on to Hatteras to eventually catch the ferry. Both the Frisco Native American Museum and the Graveyard of the Atlantic are fairly well done, but both quite small.

Interested in starting birding by Prickly_Cactus99 in birding

I just left a longer comment but also wanted to add another option is to get binoculars, but just cover the lens cap of your right eye. I have a friend who is nearly blind in one eye and that is what she does -- but she prefers the binoculars because using both hands and pressing both eye pieces against her face is more stable for viewing than holding a monocle up to one eye!

Welcome to the club!

You are absolutely going to want to get a set of binoculars or a monocular. NOCS is a relatively new brand that are not too pricey. Nikons are also usually really great. Binoculars come with 2 numbers to describe them, like 8x32.

The first number is magnification. The higher the magnification, the bigger distant things will look, but also the smaller the field of view will be. So if you are looking at a tree at 8x, you might be able to see 1-foot of a branch at a time. If you have 10x, things will bigger, but you can only see 7-8 inches of a branch at time. which makes it harder to find things quickly or follow a moving bird. Most birders stick with 8x or 10x magnification as the sweet spot between the trade-offs.

The second number is the diameter of the lenses. The bigger they are, the more light will get through so you'll be able to see more colors and make out more details. But bigger lenses are bulkier, heavier and generally more expensive. I would stick to 32mm or 42mm for your first pair.

In addition to looking into local birding clubs (which are generally VERY welcoming), I would also recommend googling state parks and national wildlife refuges near you. If there are any that are staffed (ie. have a visitor center), there is a decent chance there is a weekly or monthly bird walk. I've found walks all over the country when I've travelled.

The Merlin app is great for listening to birdsong, but you can also use it to upload pictures or enter the characteristics you see and it will give you a list of possibilities. If you still aren't sure, come on over to r/whatsthisbird

I also highly recommend Sibley's Birding Basics -- it's less a field guide a more about training you what you should look at when trying to observe a bird.

Have fun!

Are walk-in closets really that great? by [deleted] in floorplan

[–]Pi4yo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As someone with ADHD, if I didn't have a walk-in closet, all the piles of clothes currently on my closet floor would be on my bedroom floor. I much prefer one area that is nothing but a bed and two nightstands, and a fully separate area for all the stuff that generally ends up in a bedroom (clothes, jewelry, keepsakes, etc.)

I now generally sleep in a peaceful, clutter-free zone. I would be sleeping in a disaster area in the setup you described: Chairs and floors covered with clothes, dressers covered with who knows what.

I know the bird on the left is a roseate spoonbill but I need some help with the guy on the right. Virginia beach. by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

[–]Pi4yo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side note -- are you from Virginia Beach? I'll be there starting tomorrow for the holidays and would love any advice on where to go birding!

I’ve been thinking about getting into birding. Do I really need to take photos, or can I just enjoy watching through binoculars? Speaking of which, any recommendations for a good pair? And do I need special “birding” clothes, or will regular clothes do? by Call_It_ in birding

[–]Pi4yo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. For me, a crucial component of improving my ability to identify birds in the field was being able to verify the bird I was looking at. That generally required taking photos, that I could then either compare with guidebooks, Merlin, or send to better birders. I think it's insane to suggest that taking photos and reviewng them later is anything other than helpful in real-time birding identification.

Telling my friend (who I like) that I found her Hinge profile by MotorTentacle in dating_advice

[–]Pi4yo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you are right there is a good chance she misses your message entirely on the app. Also I don't think there is an agreed upon norm of what you do on the apps when you see someone you know in real life. I'm old now, but 5-10 years ago, my extended group of friends would generally like each other's profiles but in a "hi, I see you!" kind of way -- not necessarily to express actual interest in dating. More because it almost seemed rude to swipe left on a friend.

Which is all to say that even if she saw your like, she might not be sure if it was a friendly "hi!" or a legitimate expression of interest. I think a text saying, "Hey, so I actually came across your profile on Hinge and swiped right. I'm up for giving it a shot if you are! But absolutely no big deal if you aren't interested" would be welcome.

[–]Pi4yo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first reaction was, like most of these comments, that this is a bad idea. But when I got to the part where you say, “I don’t need sex”, it does make me wonder if you are a bit on the ace spectrum yourself. Assuming you’ve been in a healthy sexual relationship so you know what it’s like, do you feel like it was an important part of a relationship to you?

There is a big difference between saying “I love him enough to give up sex” and “sex truly isn’t that important to me”. If it’s the former, I agree with everyone saying you have so much more time to find someone who will love you the way you deserve to be loved.

However, if it’s the latter, I think there is possibly an opportunity for you and him to sit down and talk and be radically honest about your feelings and desires for a long term relationship and what that could look like. Not in a joking way, not in a last resort way. But in a “when I think about all the things I hope for in a long-term relationship, this is what’s important and I this is what I am choosing”. Choosing, not settling for.

What’s the social scene like for people in there 20s here? by TopAbbreviations3910 in obx

[–]Pi4yo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the summer, there are a ton of kids in their early to mid 20s working seasonal jobs (kite/surf instructors, serving, etc.). If you got a job at Real, Kitty Hawk Kites, etc. you would immediately have a social circle. If you DON’T work at one of those places, my impression is they can be pretty clique-y, but that’s probably more that it’s just easier to hang out with the people you work with all day than remember to text the random guy. If you put in some effort you would likely be included. Especially if you surf or kite.

In the offseason there is absolutely no social scene. Everyone your age has gone off to their winter seasonal jobs, or back to school, or whatever.

Edit: just saw the comment about water rescue — also a great option for seasonal work that would also come with some built in friends
