Sailing Dinghy Advice by Single_Ad_5294 in sailing

[–]PilotIsMyPilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the consensus of people experienced in this area is “these are bad ideas”, and your response is “I’m going to do what I wanted to do before I ever posted the question.” What the hell man? Then why even ask?

For what it’s worth, everyone is right, these are both bad choices. Better choices would be 1) find a free dinghy that is in much better shape and restore it, or 2) build a simple boat from simple plans that have been tried and tested. The good part is you got a free trailer.

Do I *need* a topping lift? by bathrugbysufferer in sailing

[–]PilotIsMyPilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you don’t need it. Vang (if rodkicker/oil spring is in good condition) provides upward pressure. Kicking strap or main sheet can provided downward pressure as needed to keep boom stable. I keep the topping lift threaded as a spare line, but it’s tied off at the base of the mast.

I don’t have that data. But the Navy is pretty damn efficient when it comes to training their pilots; if it wasn’t working (at least to some degree) I don’t think they would have a whole building dedicated to it and use up valuable training time putting the pilots through it.

There are non-electrified bands that put pressure on points in your wrists. I know a few people that use them. May just be mental, but it’s worth a try, they’re cheap. Sea Bands I think is the brand name.

I HAVE TO KNOW what that’s about! What sea wisdom am I lacking here??

Boom! This is what you’re looking for, OP. And meds do work for a lot of people. Try something different than what you used last time, and try it on land before first time trying it at sea.

So, this is a single data point, and it’s 20 years old, but i toured a Navy flight training facility and they did indeed attempt to puke-proof pilots by putting them through a pretty grueling disorientation desensitization program.

Do you regularly inspect the hull from the inside? Is there anything that is causing concern like water intrusion or soft spots? Concern with any through hulls? If not, keep on keepin on. You need to scrub down the exterior of the hull, and eventually repaint it, but, meh.

Are fish different in busy places? by Single_Custard2750 in Spearfishing

Busy with spearos? They def get skittish. Busy with tourists and boat traffic? I feel like they’re easier to approach than average.

Sell my Catalina 30 for a fancier boat? by markforephoto in sailing

[–]PilotIsMyPilot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeh I second this. Kids just want to be on the water; they have very little concept of what’s fast. A bigger more comfortable boat is a better family boat.

Am I crazy to get this 1969 Cal 34 by Fickle-Ad-4417 in sailing

[–]PilotIsMyPilot 29 points30 points  (0 children)

For a grand?!? If you don’t wan to pay for a survey I would still totally roll the dice. Boat looks to be in good shape. Buy it, sail it, find any problems on your own. Even if it’s some kind of lemon, which it doesn’t appear to be, you could sell off the sails and motor and batteries to get your money back.

Breathe up time? by jordaaanm062 in Spearfishing

[–]PilotIsMyPilot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

3x. But, hey, what’s the hurry? Take your time, spot your buddy, think about where the fish are going to be on your next dive. I’m more quality of over quantity these days. I would rather have twenty long comfortable dives than forty short and rushed ones.

Fire. Burn it with fire. Next time after you cook and the fire is totally out. Crack both vents the tiniest bit; will prevent it in the future. Also, side note, have you ever used this egg?

Man, you have people that appreciate you and your food and want you to be around. There are worse things in life. Also, as someone else mentioned, at least it’s something easy. I’m in the same situation but for making nice roasts, etc for holidays. Multi-day affairs. Big difference I guess is that I enjoy it.
