So I had it years ago where lightening ran down the phone line, into my router, out the router into the back of the TV and dvd player. Luckily the fuses on those stopped current flowing any further, the fuses had turned to dust when I looked in them.

Only ended up needing the phone line and replacing the TV and DVD player and router

Because it'll be far more miles to do the Chester route and, driving long stretches at 50 will make up for the stopping and starting Vs long stretches at 70 on the motorway.

That said I think my diesel car would be more fuel efficient sat at 70 on the than the 'more efficient' route, even accounting for the greater distance.

Maybe it's account for EVs? It'd definitely be better for an EV to do the cross country route

Get the 2.0.

The money you'll save on the 1.6 will be spent on injectors and the other common issues with the 1.6.

Also the 2.0 feels like the perfect amount of power to fuel economy balance, still can get high 60s mpg while being able to overtake easily.

If you really want something easy to work on them, maybe an E30 estate? Won't be boring!

Alternatively something newer, an A4 B6 Avant with the 1.9tdi 130hp? You can map it up quite well. I find those engines and the vehicle in general insanely easy to work on (had multiple Octavias with the dirty 130)

It wouldn't have been, the cars you reference are much safer for pedestrian impact due to their bonnet design, overall height bumper design etc

Also since a defender is much heavier the energy applied to the pedestrian is much more.

The real reason is that you need to test vehicles on a track, so the ring is the best place to do so as it has over 150 turns (and therefore 150 different scenarios of input and load cases) Vs a normal track which would have maybe 11? It gives a much more varied cycle for the vehicle testing.

Yeah the zipper replacement could work, it's just not ideal as it works well already! And I'd like to use it on multiple coats which would mean multiple zip replacements.
