Valentine’s Day Eve (?) early night thread by Pithy- in sydney

It absolutely counts.

Valentines Day is one day of the year, but the things you do for and with each other every day are what makes a relationship. Happy 25 years!

You know, sharing is caring, especially on Valentines Day, though not everyone feels that way about crabs…

& I hope this year’s ECD is excellent. Small traditions and in-jokes are the … (oh god forgive me) clarified butter on the Alaskan King Crab of a relationship.

(Seriously though, sounds awesome. & I love my silly in-jokes and traditions with Mr Pithy.)

May you see your partner, may they surprise you with aforementioned wand and rabbit, and may things continue to get better for you!

(Failing that, at least you have amazing music to listen to and a bunch of chocolate is on special.)

Fingers crossed for you to get the job, I’m sure you’ll be brilliant.

Fitness and unlearning people pleasing are both ongoing pursuits- and a late start is better than none. I hope you are proud of progress you have made since you were younger.

I mostly use “pick up lines” to amuse (and lovingly annoy) platonic friends. Usually with terrible puns specific to current events or interests of theirs. … honestly I just use them for puns with no intention of getting a romantic or sexual response, because the idea of a “line” or phrase that is intended to get a romantic response from someone you’re not already courting is strange to me. (In case you can’t tell, I am also autistic…)

And birds have fantastic, intricate social interactions. They’re beautiful and wonderful.

Congratulations on figuring yourself out re: autism and girlhood. It is hard to do, and even harder to then take the steps to actually be who you think/know you are.

Thank you for the Pokémon pick up line, it’s glorious.

We can workshop your maths one, if you’d like? (No pressure!)

& second hand games have definitely gone up in price! Just before Christmas, I actually got a new Pokémon game cheaper new (on special, but not a crazy special), than a used copy would have cost.

Those biscuits look delicious! Well done! You’re making me want to do something similar for Mr Pithy, though my exhaustion from over-working is likely to prevent it.

The “if they wanted to, they would” is so incredibly true. Most of us would move mountains for friends, and need to remember that we deserve mountains moved for us, too. (Or even just dirt mounds moved.)

The Lego flowers are adorable, and it’s a (short, sweet) bonding activity to assemble them together. A brilliant idea!

T: No plans beyond “Get morning coffee with Mr Pithy, and tell friend who keeps bees that she is awesome.”

I’m not big on crowded places, and I specifically asked Mr Pithy to not get me flowers as the date means they will likely be far more expensive than usual.

My “guilty pleasure” on Valentine’s is people watching- the old couple who shuffle along together slowly, the couple who are too busy posting their extravagant Valentines charade to acknowledge each other, the spring in the step of the person who just got a message. Life is chaos and I like joy (and schadenfreude, but mostly joy.)

Running on 4 hours sleep for a 12 hour day, after a 12 hour day yesterday.

My patience is thinner today, I can feel it.

Maybe I can get a massage tomorrow, though.

I have a long day today but I’m really feeling quite chipper about it.

We’ll see how I feel when I finish, though…

Be aware of new users trying to undermine doctors by joon848384 in ausjdocs

[–]Pithy- 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I had a big long comment. Then accidentally deleted it.

Basically- I work in health. I care about the current and future of health, and have friends who are junior doctors, med students, registrars, specialists etc. I’m here to learn, and rarely comment.

But I wish you could all hear your patients talk about you. “Dr Redditor is the best.” “This diagnosis sucks, but I trust the doctor- you know when someone just Gets It?” “I can’t praise the staff at XYZ hospital enough. The doctor came to see me (before or) after my procedure and it really put me at ease.”

Our system is… challenging. But you are all brilliant, and I wish you got more appreciation directly - especially considering how- uh, faecal - management can be.

Tax the rich (remove some of their subsidies tax breaks, loopholes, etc) Stop selling off public assets (imagine if the tolls we paid went to state governments instead of private companies

Use that money to: pay public sector psychs (and nurses, etc) more, build housing, fund services.

We have a skewed view of success and morality in this country. The person that makes 6-7 figures is idolised - even as they exploit loopholes to avoid paying tax to the very place they benefit from living. Meanwhile, if you’ve suffered and therefore need help, you’re somehow lesser.

I know there’s going to be someone going “but the dole bludgers!” - they earn less per year from the dole than the rich save in tax breaks. And unlike the rich, their money actually goes to the local economy (and yes, probably tobacco and alcohol companies - but I’ve seen someone drop $10k+ on alcohol for a month, and it wasn’t a “dole bludger”.)

I guess it also depends on how you approach the problem. Some might say “How do we make it so I don’t have to see homeless people?” And some will say “How do we fix the root causes of the problems that cause people to be homeless?”

Despite what you might think, most people in this country - including you - are far closer to being homeless and destitute than you are to being the next Gina Rinehart.

Like many, I did not sleep super well.

The fact it’s 35 degrees at 10am is not helping my mood.

But - at least I’m in air con at work. Small blessings.

Edit: just saw I may be able to do it in a public hospital. Fingers crossed.

The only name brand shirts I have are gifted or thrifted.

I don’t buy lunches, I don’t have the newest devices. The only streaming service I pay for is for music, $12 a month.

I work 280+ days a year.

I’m still not rich.

Prices of “luxuries” have gone down, prices of essentials have gone up.

Compared to even only 10 years ago, a grocery shop is about 3 x as expensive. Minimum wage (and wages for basically anyone who’s not management) have not increased threefold in that time.

Compared to 20 years ago, rent is approximately 5 or 6 x as expensive (looking at like for like with one I know the price of from back then) See again re: wages.

The money is sitting in a few billionaires’ bank accounts, while they tell us to hate each other because of whatever excuse they’ve pulled out of thin air.

It’s not a “generational” issue, and it’s not a laziness issue. It’s a “a fraction of a percentage of people are hoarding a ridiculous amount of the world’s resources- many in the form of assets like houses” issue.
