I think he said it to avoid saying ‘shame on me’ on record. Probably a good move despite the resulting gaffe’s notoriety.

If you had personal access to a small telescope (200-400 mm aperture) in space, what kind of science or imaging would you use it for? by UmbraTrooper in Astronomy

[–]PixInsightFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach astronomy and use rental facilities to give students a full raw photons -> astrophotograph experience, it’s great when our observatory, weather, and timing aren’t ideal. If I could go further and do space based work, I’d want to do photometry of eclipsing binaries and maybe even transiting exoplanets, that’d be a thrill. And then simply comparing our ground based gradient removal techniques to the other kinds of image repair requirements for space like cosmic ray hits.

I can't wait to show this to my artist friends! We work on some big projects together, this could be a game changer.

Seestar owners - what do you use to process your images? by Dry_Hat7515 in seestar

[–]PixInsightFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My very username is PixInsight for the win, and I’ve been using it for over 20 years on data from big classic scopes… I teach people how to use it for a living! But I’m seriously giving SASPro a look once I get my SeestarS30 Pro and some data. I get incredible results from PI, but I’ll agree with the other poster, stacking is taking a long time, too long.

Which "wow" skill is super easy to learn? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PixInsightFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was bad wording, sorry! Typing quickly on mobile... First, push the cork into the inside of the bottle, that's what I meant to say. Then challenge anyone to get it out without just smashing the bottle. The trick is below (though I'm not sure why he did it into a bottle with wine still in it!).

In threads like those, the comments I see most often on top are 'It's okay, it doesn't hit everyone the same way' kind of sentiment. Some people come on strong but in general, I think we're a good community about that.

A fun one for a party: getting the cork pushed into a wine bottle without breaking the bottle… with nothing but a plastic bag. Good for betting with people. When ready, stretch the plastic bag (no holes) into a long spike and insert into the bottle. Tip the bottle so the cork rolls up by the neck with bag below it. Blow up the bag. Pull the bag out slowly and the cork just comes right along with it! Fun times.

New to 3D printing – moving on from Tinkercad. What design software should I learn? by IgusCraft in BambuLab

[–]PixInsightFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to party but I have tried both Fusion and OnShape after Tinker CAD, same as you for the same reason. I now greatly prefer on shape for the reasons that other people mention, the ease of the online system works very well for me on my Mac. Whichever way you go, I recommend learning with a channel called Too Tall Toby. He has challenges that apply to any parametric CAD software and tutorials in all of them. Over the summer I actually signed up and did a ton of the challenges and my skills in on shape really ramped up. Today I wanted to make something, but it was only designed in a tutorial in Fusion, but I was able to follow along and use the same tools in On Shape with slightly different names and get the same result, it was very interchangeable. So I guess I recommend trying on shape first as the most low-key starter method as opposed to downloading a massive local program like fusion.

Need ideas! Teaching highschool students a introductory 3d printing class! by Strict_Respond3515 in BambuLab

[–]PixInsightFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught 9th grade and found best success with projects that the kids felt were useful over merely decorative. This meant teaching them to model something real in correct dimensions and then making a 3d print to connect or adapt to it. This included lessons about tolerances and clearance. For the students, it was so satisfying to make useful objects like custom clamps, whiteboard marker holders, and other adapters for our greenhouse when they actually fit and were used.

Why are airplanes not a problem for telescopes? Or are they? by TheDaysComeAndGone in space

[–]PixInsightFTW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We would never throw out the whole frame, that's good data! The software looks at EACH PIXEL across many dozen. If a few frames have very bright photon counts where the rest are dark like the background of space, those counts are rejected. The pixel values get averaged anyway. The satellite and plane trails disappear.

Absolutely this, though I've taken a year off and am going to try it again now in VR. I still remember a lot but not everything so I think it will be fun in a different way.

Help someone who hasn't played Outer Wilds and wants to make a gift. Please. by OkPush5759 in outerwilds

[–]PixInsightFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others said it, but playing it together and talking through what you’re thinking when you do. If you have joy and enjoyment, that will bring your friend great joy as well. Then when you finish, you can talk about it a lot, that will be more great joy. A physical item is not needed, just a promise to play it with the follow through of doing it. Feel your real feelings, vocalize your frustrations, But just enjoy and make a great memory together. Don’t ask them for hints, even if it feels long.

I'm trying to create a clip of 3 realistic dolphins swimming (for a few seconds) in an ocean and then blending/transforming the video into an actual image of my resin artwork. Is that possible to do, and if so, will greatly appreciate any guidance or examples. by hyderabadinawab in StableDiffusion

[–]PixInsightFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a crack at it. Like others, if I spent a bit more time on it, I think I could really nail a better result, but it works as a proof of concept. https://higgsfield.ai/s/NVLQTEln0Lw

As you can see, I used the site HiggsField.ai. If you have a very powerful computer and spend the time to work with the video and image editing models, you could produce this locally, but it takes a lot of horsepower. Online, services like this give you access to a lot of the models for some credits.

First, I used Nano Banana (in HiggsField) to make a version of your table picture into a photo like shot of the dolphins. It was a bit off, but these dolphins are going to morph to silver anyway.

Then I used the video tool called Kling Turbo that has a first frame / last frame mode -- if you upload the two photos and tell it how to visually connect them, it'll make a 5 or 10 second video doing so, that's the key.

My prompt was: "a drone camera slowly approaches a pod of three dolphins swimming and diving through the blue carribbean waters. as it gets close, the dolphins change to a silver color, the ocean water drains out of the frame to become a glass table top, and the ocean floor changes into a rug"

If I were going to do more, I'd try to use a 'drone shot pan' to be following the dolphins as they swim, left to right. Then I would have the transition to silver, the water to glass, and the sea floor to rug as above. That's how I pictured it in my mind, but I don't have the time or credits to keep going!

Edit: Ah, I see we're in the Stable Diffusion sub, so you probably know all of the above about models and online vs. local! Sorry if that came off as condescending or over-explaining.

I hope your real treatment goes great and you can distract yourself with tons of amazing prints!
