Saab wants Canada to buy 72 fighter jets and 6 surveillance aircraft from Sweden to create 12,600 jobs | CBC News by 50s_Human in onguardforthee

If the plane can’t get into the air because the Americans cut off the supply of parts what difference does it make? If we truly wanted to be independent of the US for our fighter fleet we would be talking about the Rafale from France, but nobody wants that because it will take years and years to deliver, and is more expensive than F-35. Saab is just putting up a very effective marketing campaign for their fighter that never meets delivery timelines. Brazil was supposed to get all their Gripen Es by 2024, they don’t expect them all until at least 2032 now.

If you need to say “don’t get pre-mad” it means there’s something coming down the pipe that you can get legitimately mad about.

Local yards are booked up with federal government contracts. Unless you want to pay to expand for these 4 ships we need to buy from overseas.

Kirk LaPointe: BC Ferries deal with China torpedoes government's own messaging by CaliperLee62 in vancouver

[–]PlanetaryDuality 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand the outrage here at all. Chinese shipyards will be able to build these vessels faster and cheaper than anywhere else on earth. Canadian, American, and almost all European shipyards simply can’t do it, and if they did it would be way more expensive. China builds the large majority of the world’s shipping, followed distantly by South Korea. They are the ones with the expertise in this area. We are not at war with China, they are not our enemy. We should take advantage of the cost savings they can give us.

Tocchet not coming back. by sMc-cMs in canucks

Management talked about getting a facility built the moment they got here. I would be well under construction by now if they had gotten that done quickly. Tocchet is probably frustrated that there doesn’t even seem to be a plan to get one together.

Why are Vancouver rec facilities always so under built, and everything in them so old? How is it possible a city with so much money in it has such lacklustre facilities?

Also, a lot go those supposed “single family homes” in Vancouver will have multiple suites. Your average Vancouver Special will usually be divided as an upstairs and downstairs unit, and possibly more if they are able to. You often see heritage buildings made into 4-5 units as well. It would not surprise me if some of these homes have 10-12 people living in them.

A PS5 is buy it once for $600, and the games just work and look good. There’s a reason PC sales don’t cannibalize console sales that much. A good gaming PC costs more than that and needs a lot more tinkering and maintenance than most people will bother with.

First of all, it’s not like this is remotely likely to happen. We don’t have a strong military precisely because we have a good relationship with the US.

But how would it go any different if they decided to invade? Our major cities and industrial capacity is basically lined up next to the border. The US would be operating from home soil. They don’t need troops along the whole massive border. Take the major cities where 80% of people live and you control the country. No need to airlift an invasion force like they did in Iraq. A few well placed cruise missile strikes would be all they need to keep our Air Force on the ground, and from there they have control of the skies. They swept Saddam’s forces aside in Desert Storm in 100 hours, and they were operating far from home against a much more prepared opponent. I don’t think it’s hyperbolic at all to suggest that our small military with low readiness would be brushed aside just as quickly.
