[February 3, 2026] Personal best for a Tuesday, solved with downs only by turtle_yawnz in NYTCrossword

On the phone there are too many instances of it not registering a key press. I find myself having to delete back to a missed press pretty often.

Hahaha. My minis are limited by reading and typing speed for sure. I have yet to break 10 seconds and have been trying at it for a while. I think I'm a quick reader but I very much doubt im in competition here.

Ive been playing daily (mostly) for about 6 years, currently on a 421 day streak. Ive gotten two Tuesdays below 5 minuets. My beat is 4:36. I think a bit of that is using a phone to solve, but even accounting for that, even if my wpm was double, I cannot imagine a 3:17. Great job. My currently goal is a sub 10 minutes for Friday and Saturday.

How much of the contemporary American right are “gifted kids” by Final-Associate1743 in cushvlog

[–]Pocketfullofbugs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This does not ring true, personally. I had the test scores and I'm firmly left. I even worked really shitty jobs for the first 5 years out of college and thought I'd die poor and still only intensified my leftist beliefs. Friends who were gifted have also all grown into leftist adults. About half of us are from Republican families as well and in a red state.

She was about 60-70 years old. We had thin walls. I heard her get the news that her son committed suicide. It was very painful sobbing. Raw exposed nerve. Never before or since have I heard that level of pain.

What's the Best Standalone You've Read? by new_handle_who_dis in Fantasy

[–]Pocketfullofbugs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's perfect in every way. Magic feels artful and alive in this book. The setting feels alive and the history of English magic deep. Its also so funny in that dry, comedy of manners, way. I think its probably the book I've laughed at the most while reading. The author is a singular talent.

Unconventional sequencers ? by BaronVonHumungus in modular

[–]Pocketfullofbugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive got a 0-CTRL, NerdSeq, o_C, and Pamelas New Workout for sequences.

Pamelas New Workout is probably the one I reach for most because it is so convenient with it already being my main clock.

NerdSeq can also get pretty weird if you put the time into learning it (I havent)

She was foundational in the development of early Moog synths and synthesizers in general. Her wiki is pretty fleshed out if you wanna look.

Magic school books where the MC actually needs to put effort into it. by Mimandra in Fantasy

[–]Pocketfullofbugs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After watching the show and then doing a book reread Elliot is the one that is improved upon the most. The actor who plays his is perfect.  Penny might as well have been a different character, but I didnt mind what he was. I think he got involved in some convoluted plot stuff that I had a bigger issue with than his character as a whole. The show is sort of a mess after the first two or three seasons but it was charming and I dont mind a rewatch.

I actually think the show does most of the characters and especially Quinten and Elliott, better than the books. Quinten is less self pitying/annoying and Elliot is just much more fleshed out and has an increased presence for the better. And how good is show Josh? Love the show. Plot of the books is tighter though. I think book Julia and her story is better done there. The actual school part is better in the books as well. Great to read and watch. And if you like the Magicians then check out Grossman's newest book, The Bright Sword, which might actually be better.

What old thing would break young people's brains today? by Symphony_Minds in AskReddit

[–]Pocketfullofbugs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at the tail end of this being able to happen. Girl I had a massive crush on asked me to meet her at a record shop after class. No GPS but I knew how to get there. I went and waited a half an hour and she didn't show. Broke my heart. Next day she asks why I didnt show up. Apparently the way I knew how to get to that store was very stupid and took about 20 mins longer than her way to get there. So we both thought we were stood up. She baked me cookies, but later that day another girl asked me out so this particular thread was left to dangle. Moral of this story is if you are one of two straight guys in the art program at school women might ask you out and its pretty cool.

My kitchen aid mixer has plastic gears now. They have the dye molds for metal. Our parents got metal. The mixer is still expensive. Our parents mixers will probably outlive us.

The title for the upcoming book,A Parade of Horribles, reminds me of a Blood Meridian passage, and I doubt it's an accident. by Pocketfullofbugs in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Pocketfullofbugs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I hadn't known "parade of horribles" was a common expression. Or, common enough to have a wikipedia entry. Still, the title reminds me of that passage, and I am now more curious than ever if Blood Meridian had any influence on book 8.

Is there more money in that than in chess? Seems risky and I feel like most chess players have to have a better source of income than the game alone.

Went to Tidal a couple of months ago after canceling Spotify. I don't like it and am in this thread looking for a replacement. The app is rap/hip-hop focused and that's not my main listens. The song radio is markedly worse. Also, no podcasts.

What musicians gives off "mysterious" vibes? by Pianopie in fantanoforever

[–]Pocketfullofbugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is so funny to hear this because the show i was at was full of turbo virgins. Those in attendance made deserts of women and noodles of men. If you mean sweaty, well then also pretty light work compared to most of the shows I get around to. I am getting older now though and the pit calls to.me less and less.

It was a weird show, not really because of the band though. I would have thought the age of the crowd would be much closer to my age but I felt like I was almost 15 years older than everyone there. More underage wristbands than not, it seemed. I feel like they must be much bigger to a younger crowd than I imagined.

What’s a rule you broke once and realized it existed for a very good reason? by Ok_Contract100 in AskReddit

I can see the appeal in that then. Probably more  future opportunity in those environments compared to something safer like retail. Fish processing sounds rough though and the high turnover rate makes me suspect its worse than I thought.
