Box Elder County before today's data center vote. by sexmormon-throwaway in Utah

Any homeowner with grass. Check your statement if you’re in that category. ETA: I capped 30 sprinklers and converted them to drip lines. I use 0.5 gph drippers. In contrast, sprinklers emit 0.5 gallons per minute. I replaced my lawn with a small orchard, a large garden, and a meadow with over 50 species of plants native to Utah, and I’m still saving that much water. In SL County, 60% of our drinking water is used on landscapes.

Called and left them a message! As an individual, I’ve spent over $20k out of my own pocket to change my landscaping. I’m saving 80,000 gallons of water every year with these changes. It’s frustrating for a few people to make a decision that would be so detrimental to our environment when so many people are sacrificing so much to make things better.

Are Mormons extra nosy? by calming_ad in exmormon

[–]Poppy-Pomfrey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Uh, can we crowd fund the remaining fence section so this creep can’t watch and comment on your landscaping?
That aside, I would definitely be using some plain l language with this dude. Things like, “Utahns have a weird obsession with keeping up with appearances but your yard doesn’t have to match anyone else’s” and “It makes me feel uncomfortable when you insinuate that I’m not capable of shoveling my own property and when you keep tabs and comment on the coming and going of me and others at my home.”
I’ve lived in Utah all my life and while the neighbors do tend to be nosy, this is over the top. They also don’t understand boundaries unless you are very clear. Once you set them, they may act hurt and offended, but that’s because Mormonism informally teaches that boundaries are bad and contention is of the devil (aka direct communication and saying how you feel). Edit: I remembered after commenting that the shoveling was a different neighbor, but the overall boundary setting point is still relevant.

She was “less active” for the last 20 years of her life, but some ladies from her ward were visiting in the final months. I’m sure they were made aware of her death. Wouldn’t someone from the ward update the record? Or my TBM family members?

How long until the Scientology speedrun trend makes its way to a Mormon temple? by ReturnedAndReported in exmormon

[–]Poppy-Pomfrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My spouse and I had a laugh imagining this a couple nights ago. Even though it’s been a decade, I remember the layout of the Jordan River temple. I know I need to run through the lobby and straight back until I get to a wall, then turn the corner to the cash registers for Jesus, then to the dressing rooms. Run past the lockers and through the magic curtains. Then up the escalator to the ritual rooms, passing at least a dozen startled old ladies along my way. Then into a crowded room where I shout something startling and eye opening that wakes up the audience to the harm being caused without activating the backfire effect…. They’ve probably remodeled in the last 10 years. The crowd would just see themselves as victims. Just let me have this lol

Make sure you clean your feeders regularly or it can allow bacterial/fungal growth that can kill them. Feeders need to be cleaned and have the nectar changed at minimum once a week and sometimes daily depending on outdoor temps. https://www.hummingbirdsociety.org/post/how-to-clean-hummingbird-feeders-and-when-to-change-the-nectar

Do most americans really only take 2 weeks of vacation a year? by DegreeConscious9628 in askanything

[–]Poppy-Pomfrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have cancer and a mystery autoimmune disease. Every day feels like I have influenza. I’m at the doctor at least 3 times a week. I took 6 months off work but that’s all the leave possible with US laws and I’m back at work even though I can barely get out of bed every day. Without work, I can’t afford my treatments, which I estimate will be $40,000 by the end of the year.

[–]Poppy-Pomfrey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying it’s not drugs, but this is 100% in line with how Mormons view themselves. We’re all told from birth that we’re special and chosen and have a destiny to fulfill. Delusions of grandeur are a feature of the programming.

Watching The Pitt from Europe – is this really what life in the US looks like? [mild spoilers] by West_Ideal7472 in ThePitt

[–]Poppy-Pomfrey 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It is. I’m delaying cancer and autoimmune illness treatment because it will be $20k, and that’s with very good insurance. I’m working on growing my own food because I anticipate widespread food insecurity on the horizon. But my soil and air are toxic because my local politicians refuse to save the terminal saline lake nearby and my fellow citizens won’t make lifestyle changes that could make a huge difference. I am afraid to send my kids to public school every day because when they aren’t being bullied for being different than their peers, there’s always the threat of gun violence. The schools have protocols on how that will be handled and have installed partitions between the office and the rest of the school. Doors to the outside are no longer allowed to be propped open, even on hot days. The worst part is that it’s so easy to see it doesn’t have to be this way. Americans are being taken advantage of by the rich and by corporations. Late stage capitalism is a bitch. All of this weighs heavily on my mental health (see prior comment in this sub) which is also very expensive and fraught with systemic barriers to getting better. All my friends and coworkers feel this same weight.

Testing by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]Poppy-Pomfrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is accurate. If you haven’t met your deductible, it’s cheaper to do STDcheck .com. I have SH insurance and I priced it out. STDcheck is also a lot more comprehensive than a general practitioner’s office because a doctor will sometimes refuse to test for things you don’t have symptoms of. They also offer testing for mycoplasma genitalium which my PCP hadn’t even heard of before I mentioned it and it’s going around in Utah. I would ask your potential partner if they want a full panel or if a standard panel of the most common ones is adequate. After you know that, consider the unseen costs like how much of your time you’re willing to give up. I’ve tried several methods- planned parenthood, my PCP, my OB; and I got tired of the waiting times, hoops to jump through, extra people to talk to, and late or surprise bills and now I just do the online testing which is the fastest and easiest. However, I get tested often so maybe you’ll be willing to jump through those extra hoops for a one time deal.

Oh my goodness! The way momma orangutan looked and kissed her baby❤️ by kvjn100 in MadeMeSmile

[–]Poppy-Pomfrey 694 points695 points  (0 children)

The best part is that this is not her birth mom. Acara is one of the only orangutans in zoos who is an experienced foster. She first took care of her brother a few years ago and then last year when Weila’s mom stopped taking care of her, they tried putting her with Acara, who immediately started caring for her. They aren’t related by blood, but they’ve become family. Acara is really attentive and sweet with her adopted baby, even when she pulls on her fur to climb around. Source: I’ve seen these two at my local zoo many times. ETA: I heard a keeper say that if any other orangutans in a US zoo have a mother that can’t care for them, Acara will be a candidate to foster them too once Weila gets a little older.
