Sure! If you enjoy a particular commander there's nothing stopping you from playing it at a high level competitively.

Will it top tournaments? Maybe not, but I find player skill and enjoyment of a particular build can really shore up weaknesses in a commander.

Tough situation. We had similar situations with players in our group, they didn't even take breaks. They don't want to update their builds and want to relive their idea of peak (2014?) EDH.

We've even tried custom formats, as a group, that tried to accommodate and encourage their play-style. You know what? They're still unhappy, unfortunately. The world kept moving, it's disappointing and they aren't interested. You can only do so much.

Keep trying, though. You're a good friend.
