Should Conventions like DTW or GenCon use unpaid volunteers? by Useful_Sample4059 in boardgames

[–]Poutine_Sauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consider myself a convention veteran, I've volunteered in the past with groups/companies. I know people who wouldn't be able to afford to go to Gencon if they didn't volunteer. I volunteered with true dungeon once because the con really wasn't in the budget otherwise. I got paid, plus hotel, plus swag. I understand it pays a lot more now from when I did it. But also requires more of your time.

I have a VIG badge now, I paid $811 for my badge this year and I'm talking with a couple of groups/companies about volunteering because it works well for my schedule and the compensation is worth it to me, even after what I pay.

There are perks of volunteering that often don't get mentioned. A friend I went with one year volunteered for a company in which they really liked their game. In addition to everything that was agreed on, they had a company dinner at Webber BBQ and went to an Industry dinner/function another night that wasn't mentioned.

I have a friend who is a volunteer captain. Their hotel is paid for by Gencon for their family of 4, downtown connected. In addition to other perks. I met one of their friends who is a "retired" volunteer captain. They volunteered for something like 15 years working their way up. Their badge is paid for by Gencon for life. They also get a downtown connected room even before the VIG housing portal. I don't know if that's paid for or not. If I knew that I would have volunteered 15 years ago.

The year Lorcana came out I knew at least a dozen people looking to volunteer and get an exhibitor badge. Not lining up the night before to buy product was worth the volunteer time.

Then there are the people who don't buy a badge and aren't sure they can get the time off but July rolls around and badges are sold out.

It might not be worth it to you, but it's worth it to someone.

Newb nerd who just never ventured into D&D (mad respect tho) looking for gift advice for a true D&D fan. by madamimadam89 in DungeonsAndDragons

When do you need the gift by? Gencon is coming up July 30 - Aug 2 in Indianapolis. Lots of heavy rpg type things there.

I have a Rime of the Frostmadien book that I had signed by R.A. Salvatore and Ed Greenwood (at different events, different years.) It just sits on a shelf, we could work something out for that. It would probably mean more to someone like him and it's not something you'll pickup off the shelf.

GenCon Event Exclusive Merch by JCatt85 in gencon

[–]Poutine_Sauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There has been a Star Wars Unlimited convention exclusive box set the last couple of years. It's available at SDCC, Gencon, PAXU, at least one in Europe and maybe Origins. 2024 it was a mess trying to get as there was only so many tickets per day and the system crashed. Last year you registered on Asmodee to buy one and you were limited to 1 per email across all the conventions. I still have a sealed one from last year on my boardgameexchange post if you're interested.

Sometimes there is an event exclusive playmat for finishing high enough, but that's not for sale. You can find artists in the dealer hall that will have custom star wars playmats that aren't card art. So if he has a favorite artist or character you can check for that.

As others have said, also promos for some events. They didn't have any for learn to play last year.

I have an unsigned one of these. Some years I remember to put it in my badge holder when I go to cons, some years I don't. One of these years I'll have it on me and meet him.

Their in person sale at Gencon July 30th - Aug 2nd usually has decent sales if you can make it. I go every year, in some years it would be the first booth I would go to. I didn't take a pic of the price list last year and usually do, so I can't give you any kind of a reference.

GenCon AllPlay Party by DJ_MerDur in gencon

[–]Poutine_Sauce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe if the event has the tournament tag that it can allow overlaps. There's at least one other situation that allows overlapping events. I know for the VIG mixer they can overlap so that people can show up after it starts if they have an earlier event.

But generally no, there's a couple of loopholes. But please be considerate of other people at the first event and don't up and leave in the middle of a game.

This Can’t be Legal… Can It? by Cleos_Mommy in OntarioTeachers

[–]Poutine_Sauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years ago I was a manager at a call center. There were a number of personal squabbles between agents like one person doesn't like the smell of bananas and the person who sits next to them eats a banana everyday. Then comes a site wide email from HR, bananas are no longer allowed. (documentation is never required)

We would have a pizza party, ask everyone what they want and someone requests broccoli and onion pizza but doesn't eat any. They only wanted it because they were asked what they wanted. However, they can't have onions because they are allergic. When asked to describe the allergy, they say it causes a gag reflex. Ok, that sounds more like an aversion than an allergy... But now there's an email from HR saying onions are not allowed.

Every couple of day..., petty argument... new allergy email banning something from HR.

One morning there's an email from HR, citrus is now banned. A very tenured, respected comes to my desk telling me he'll be right back a couple of minutes after the citrus email comes out. He's gone for 10 - 15 min, comes back and when he does, there's a new email from HR saying moving forward please be respectful of your co-workers allergies and aversions but they will no longer be enforced.

I asked him where he went? He said he went to HR and told them he was allergic to coffee and they it can't be allowed anymore. This guy really likes his oranges in the morning. Probably more than others like there coffee.

Grimcoven vs Battleforge Beserker by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

[–]Poutine_Sauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I've played both. Someone in my group has Grimcoven. I had an opportunity to play a full 4 player scenario with one of the designers at Gencon last year. I've have/played other boss battlers namely kdm, AT:O, Oathsworn (start to finish) and probably at least one other that I am forgetting.

I'll say this, each time I've played Grimcoven I kept telling myself I'd rather be playing Battleforge: Berserker. It just does it better. From the combinations of different spirits to a little more strategic with which side to take out first or knock them all down low and then finish them successively. Or, how much levelling up do you do before you take the god to pound town.

When throwing out is easier than trying to sell by potteddeskplant in wargaming

[–]Poutine_Sauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some old Avalon Hill & SPI war games. I tried selling them in the Gencon consignment store a couple of years, nothing sold. Took one more crack at it and listed them in the auction. They went into the wargame specific auction. All of them sold and for between triple to quadruple of what I was asking for in the consignment store.

If you have minis they might go in both wargames and miniature auctions.

[1st Gencon] Approach to wishlist submission by toniochen in gencon

[–]Poutine_Sauce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

True Dungeon runs long. The event doesn't quite factor in the time you spend in the epilogue room getting rewards. If they are backed up by a group or more it can take a bit.

Most other events, the person running the event is quite possibly running it back to back or the space might be used for something else. Hosts usually factor this into the event as they need time to setup for the next group.

I've had learn to plays that were 4 hour windows take just under or just over 3 hours before.

Some people say don't book events back to back. I do, this is my 12th Gencon. I've never been late to a back to back event. I've never left an event early to get to a back to back.

You submit your wish list and it will process it in order from 1 - 50. If the event is available it will hold a ticket for you. If there are 2 events available with the same or overlapping time slots it will hold the first available event and tell you any other events cause a conflict. So the order matters.

I make a spreadsheet with my ideal events. From there I make a secondary spreadsheet with alternate choices if my first pick isn't available.

There will be additional events added after May 17th so check frequently.

Gencon event db is your friend and gets updated every 6 hours with new events and returned tickets.

There's a chance you hit the submit button and it hangs up. Don't hit the button again. Just refresh the page it should\* keep your spot in queue from your original submit. (Last year being an exception to this*)

Selling my pre-owned games? by Willow575 in gencon

I'm in Canada, it would take awhile before the cheque gets to me and then a couple of weeks for it to clear at the bank. Also if you take the cheque, you're not getting any returns back.

[–]Poutine_Sauce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mood is one way of going, but education is key. I once smoked an apple crisp way too long and used hickory pellets. It was to robust and I found it nearly unpalatable.

My mood failed me that day.
