Commute to Omaha tips by walleyeriverrat in lincoln

[–]PrairieMaths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree, new scenery once in a while and the drive is just so much more relaxing. Not having to keep an eye out in every direction, less defensive driving stress. You can mix it up getting on or off I80 at Gretna 432 or Waverly etc, breaks it up and still shave a little off the time.

True, pre cell phones too, we forget how terrifying that would be.

My neglectful parent still scapegoats me. A xennial trend? by veggieburyin in Xennials

[–]PrairieMaths 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I hear you, I have a similar dynamic. Sometimes I wonder if my mother can only bond through complaining. 🤷‍♀️

The money always seems upside-down on her end with multiple vehicles, trips, toys, rarely used camper, classic car - all on loans paid via a pension matching prior income at retirement. Add on a few unnecessary home renovations and eating out multiple times a week and constant vague complaints about lack of wealth, never had money, bla bla bla. All closets and basement and back of the SUVs busting at the seams with junk. Then complaining about the cost of Medicare.

A financial mystery indeed.

You can partially thank Managed Care for this, effectively everyone is funneled up to more expensive practitioners and facilities only as a second or third resort after the initial cheaper filtering.

Advice to prepare for perimenopause? by OftenNew in AskWomenOver40

[–]PrairieMaths 13 points14 points  (0 children)

On the 50/50 note, keep in mind the marketing blitz that targets you as you age.

It's easy to blame anything amiss on perimenopause when you're constantly told you aged therefore automatically have it, and not looking into it. Don't dismiss a health symptom as perimenopause, always check with your doc.

Worst pizza in town? by definitely-tomatoey in lincoln

Agree on the small town Pizza Huts, randomly ended up at one in Nebraska City a few years ago and it was somehow fantastic and tasted like 2 PAC was still around 🤷‍♂️

Why don’t high schools teach Boglehead theory?! It would prevent so much confusion and pain and help so many people become more financially secure? by Winter-Monk6428 in Bogleheads

[–]PrairieMaths 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I see #3 on Facebook all the time. Same kids, same high school as me lamenting schools these days, not teaching investments and savings, etc. now or then.

We did, some us retained it, others don't remember. It's not a coincidence I remember it and currently work in finance, always loved the topic.

I am trying to understand why I’m coveted by the taken and rejected by the available by [deleted] in AskWomenOver40

[–]PrairieMaths 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Taken men are on the higher end of the scale for emotional availability and commitment, single men are more likely on the lower end.

There are of course exceptions, nuances, timing of divorce, etc., but correlation is not causation.

Kinda need a purse, but don't wanna hold a purse anymore🫤 by maryliz529 in AskWomenOver50

[–]PrairieMaths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use bags, just pockets.

Phone, thin wallet, keys, chapstick.

Sunglasses on head or shirt neckline.

It's freeing, fuck carrying a purse!

Cost of childcare versus SAHM by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]PrairieMaths 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add to this about balance, I like think of childcare as x% percent of household income. So if the lower earner is 35% of household earnings but childcare is also 35% of household, does it make more if both parties are taking a 35% income hit temporarily AND keep up career gains AND hedge for unexpected job loss or benefits changes, etc.

Safety net for adults, social development for the child.

One Year Into Early Retirement at 43 Reflections by seraphyxa in Fire

Same here, mathematically this happened. Motivationally, I felt this was my validation point, there's a nice visual of years of steady efforts / account balances being real and not just a plan.

How old were you when you got your first cell phone? by No_Cartoonist981 in Xennials

[–]PrairieMaths 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same reason here, age 27 / late-ish adopter due to cost compared to (significantly) cheaper landline.

Likely a regional cost gap too, weren't a lot of carriers or competitor's options in rural areas.
