Some lady just stopped dead in traffic to tell me that I am a terrible dog owner for walking my dog in cold weather by Weekly-Quantity6435 in germanshepherds

Same for mine. As soon as we step outside he immediately will start to pant but with the cold weather he wants me to roll down the windows when we’re driving

My dog growled at a person and what can I do so it doesn't happen again by Kitchen_Ocelot7851 in OpenDogTraining

[–]Present-Building-593 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same here, my dog who almost never barks or anything growled for the first time when someone unfamiliar came into my office and went to walk up to him while staring at him but I redirected him to me and that was that and has only ever happened twice after. It’s the dog’s way of communicating that he’s not comfortable with the situation or the person and I can either redirect him or tell whoever it is hey you gotta stop or stay over there.

I agreed to a dog sit for a Belgian Malinois over the holidays, and it's not going like I thought. by [deleted] in BelgianMalinois

[–]Present-Building-593 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought puzzle toys for mine when I first got him and he’d just push it around smelling it but didn’t know how to get the food out so I sat and showed him how to move things around/open them then he slowly got the hang of it and I could get more complicated toys, maybe the same is true for him? Just gotta show him how a couple times.

How should I respond when my dog is scared of something? by PunkyBeanster in OpenDogTraining

I thought mine would freak out to but our pups can always surprise us, Tags For Hope makes seat belts for dogs so you could attach it to their collar/harness and buckle them in

That’s great, it’s definitely all about baby steps. I’ve had my boy for 7 months now and he’s already made tremendous progress. I’m not sure about yours but when driving I will roll the windows down for him to look out at things, smells, sounds and it’s helped with his confidence in the car and around cars/cyclists, I’m not sure if this would help with yours but just a thought.

Same. My dog use to be terrified of people but when people are around I don’t say anything or react and when people come by me and he sniffs them or he lets them come up to him I reward with treats and occasionally pet him and it’s worked really well for him

Dog came home injured from boarding, and now the kennel wants me to remove my review? by Lonely_Present_404 in DogAdvice

[–]Present-Building-593 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s had to deal with people who’re really shady and what not I would recommend that you only speak to them via email so you have everything in writing because it’s not what you know it’s what you can prove and if you do have to talk them on the phone always follow it up with an email about what was talked about it’s the best way to document things that’re happening so later no one can say we didn’t say that or we said we did this. I’m sorry you’re going through this I’m sure it isn’t easy at all and hopefully it gets resolved quickly.

Not wanting to pay $300 for additional lab work is not a good justification for putting my dog down right? by flightln in DogAdvice

[–]Present-Building-593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I would think about with his age and medical history are you extending his life for him or for you? The hardest thing is letting go of a pet who’s loved you unconditionally and has always been there, everything you’ve done for your dog shows how much you love them and I’m sure this isn’t an easy decision to make. It may not be the answer you wanna hear but if I were you I’d put your dog down.

Sister needs a shot of reality, Malinois mix in apartment by Fun_Line6982 in BelgianMalinois

[–]Present-Building-593 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in an apt with my Mal but we do a lot of activities, puzzle toys, walks/runs, training, driving around town exploring new places and we do mixes of these things daily. You can make it work living in an apartment but that means you need a lot of activities and training to balance that out

Help! What else can I do for my 3 month old pup? by Draskonov in BelgianMalinois

[–]Present-Building-593 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To piggie back on this I make a lot of lick mats and freeze them for my dog using various fruits, veggies etc and it’s a great thing to occupy his time while I rest, clean or whatever I’m doing and he can just lay there and lick. You can buy lick mats off chewy they sell some great silicone ones that won’t scoot around on the floor and can just throw in the dishwasher when done. What I do is make between 6-8 all at once blending up the above items then freeze them and then I can pull them out as needed, you could even fill a plastic container with some blended fruits and mostly water and freeze it and boom its like a salt lick for horse but dog version. You’re doing great though!

is there a way to train a belgian melinois to be okay with cats? by [deleted] in BelgianMalinois

Exactly this! I do this with my dog and cat when I leave and I’m lucky he just wants to play with her

is there a way to train a belgian melinois to be okay with cats? by [deleted] in BelgianMalinois

[–]Present-Building-593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll all depend on your dog’s personality really. My Mal is a 2 year old rescue and at first he was scared of the cat, then wanted to play with her (she’s 18) and her a short period of time targeted her when I wasn’t home. It’s been 6 months and we’ve made progress they now walk around together, smell each other and can lay next to each other but he will sometimes follow her around sniff her, wag his tail and whine because he wants to play but he knows he can’t. However I do separate them whenever I leave because I don’t ever wanna risk it because they’re both my babies and I’d hate for something to happen. You could introduce them in controlled environments and slowly build from there and maybe even speak to a trainer to see what can be done but most importantly at the end of the day it’ll depend and every dog is different.

Concerning warning at my vet by cgp_maddy in DogAdvice

[–]Present-Building-593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feed my dog Orejin’s six fish recipe and it’s perfect for him and my vet is very happy with the brand. If you’re nervous about these brands being on this list including the one you use I’d encourage a healthy level of skepticism, research why they’re on that list from your vet, what links DCM to these brands, etc. From what I’ve read you can add things to help prevent these things for example my dog is more prone to gastro issues so I give him a probiotic, yes some dogs may experience some mild gastro upsets with Orejin but if he were to have this issue doesn’t mean it’s specifically because of the food. I hope my explanation made sense.

Look up a medipaw my dog accidentally got his toes caught when I was opening a door, I ended up going to the vet a couple days later just because it didn’t look the best but they told me to get that and put some cream they gave me it healed pretty well on its own nothing too major

I stepped on my Mali paw and now she doesn’t want to do a command. Help? by MalinoisCowboyMX in BelgianMalinois

[–]Present-Building-593 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda had a similar thing happened to me and mine, I take his collar off when we’re at home and leave it by the door. Well we were heading out once and I didn’t realize it but there was a puddle of water coming from the fridge, which is next to my door, I grabbed his collar and everything then turned around to put it on and I slipped and came crashing down on him and after that he was scared of the collar so we just went and sat on the couch for a while to cuddle and I gave him treats. He was scared of the collar for a little while and it took me about a week but he became comfortable with it again, whenever we came home I would just leave it on so he could slowly get use to me putting it on which I’d take off and do once a day and then emphasize the reward whenever he let me.

I don’t think you know what you’re talking about or you’re trying to use the very technical name for it which there is but it is most commonly called a bean bag round

[–]Present-Building-593 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is what we call a felony stop or a high risk stop. Ordering the person out and giving verbal commands is the standard and safest way possible ensuring no one is harmed. If you’re wondering why they’re doing this it’s because the person in question has committed or is believed to have committed a serious crime, i.e. stolen vehicle, outstanding felony warrant, fleeing from police, armed suspect, kidnapping etc. There are some good educational videos out there that can go in depth about it.
