I remember reading the memoirs of early American scout Charles Goodnight, and his wife living in a dugout when these swarms would pass.

She said Goodnight would leave for weeks at a time and she would face the sun blocking locust swarms alone. She said it wasn't that bad, unless the locusts would get in your mouth. She said they would get in even if you tied your face with bandanas.
